Shakeup at Gannett's corporate office -- what is McClatchy waiting for? (updated)

My blogging colleague Jim Hopkins notes the executive in charge of circulation at Gannett is "retiring." Gannett VP Rob Althaus sent out a memo announcing he is leaving Gannet in January. Like the politician/bureaucrat/head coach who steps down "to spend more time with his family" -- people at Gannett wonder if the departure is voluntary or forced. Or, maybe he is bailing before insolvency.

From Gannett Blog comments:

I never thought Althouse had a brain, but he has proven me wrong. Retire now and get the payout, before the company files Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. He may actually get his retirement funds -- and his 2008 bonus-- before the curtain falls. Smart move, Rob.
What is McClatchy waiting for? Earlier this month Ganett CEO Dubow announced he would be taking a voluntary pay cut. What's up at McClatchy's corporate office?
.
UPDATE: Gannett's executive in charge of content is also stepping down... get cracking, McClatchy!

Jim Morrison can explain it to you better than I can.

Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
