When is the announcement?

McClatchy employees are on edge, waiting for the official word on layoffs and furloughs and pay cuts. One commenter on this blog thinks Raleigh's announcement will be Monday. Hmmm. The publisher of the Modesto Bee told his employees the announcement will be made "at the end of this month."

When the announcement comes, you'll find the latest info right here.

Fort Worth expecting it on Monday.

Ths is what I want to read on this blog -- news about McClatchy and its newspapers. All this acreaming about the so-called mainstram media -- which, by the way, includes Rush Limbaugh and Fox News, both of which have millions of listeners and viewers daily -- just hurts the Website. How is Fox News any less mainstream than CNN? I suspect most of the screeds against the MSM are coming from the same three people, who have neither the guts nor the integrity to sign their names to their posts.

The Star-Telegram is so terribly thin, even on Sunday. Today's paper took no time at all to read.

Even though I was among those laid off in June, I am sad for my friends still there, sad for the industry, sad for the community. It's difficult to witness the struggle.

You are incorrect Mr Weatherford. "MSM" and "Mainstream Media" are terms coined by leftist politicians and their surrogate "news" agencies, namely the NY Times and the AP tentacles of which McClatchy belongs. The purpose was expressly designed to isolate and attempt to discredit any information coming from alternative media sources outside the AP/DNC cartel of information. It was a pointed slander aimed at Fox News or any other source of information that did not toe the cartel line. But, you already know that very well. Nice try poisoning the well, but like it or not, Fox News is going to offer both sides to a given story and there is nothing you can do about that.

Rush Limbaugh on the other hand is a commentator and yes he has millions of listeners, so, if it comforts you to believe that most of the screeds against the MSM are coming from the same three people, so be it. Custer thought he knew the deal right up until the end too.

Also, no matter how hard you try, you do not control the conversation here. You don't get to copy edit anything, you don't get to choose what topics are covered, you don't set the agenda, and you don't get to choose the headlines.

Have you considered applying for a job with Dennis Moore sir? He puts out an interesting newsletter and never, ever responds to a criticism. Right up the old KC Star alley I would say.

Les, the problem is this blog started out as a rant against the Sacramento Bee. (The Web address cancelthebee might hint at that!)Now, with the rapid downturn at McClatchy newspapers, worried people are clinging to it for information. What McClatchy workers (past and present) need is an online site to share information, comments, and legitimate feelings. Yes, yes: The profane, mean, and repetitious trolls will eventually find that site too, but at least it would give us an alternative to this guy.

Les,

Actually, there are four of us that do all these posts all over the blogosphere celebrating the demise of the Drive-By Media. But I ALWAYS sign my name to my posts. And I'm in the phone book in Ruston, LA.

"You are incorrect Mr Weatherford. "MSM" and "Mainstream Media" are terms coined by leftist"

I stopped reading at this point since i already have read enough of these comments to understand where he is comming from but more to the point this guy is a complete moron.

I really do think its like 1-4 guys just trolling this blog everyday waiting for an opertunity to spout out anti leftist crap. I am not even liberal and i know better.

8:47 can you read? Your not even in the right forum for this, nobody cares about your views here, most folks just want to know stuff that is work related.

No, we cant control what is in the comment section but we can point out that you are a retard and have no clue what is really going on around you.

Hey dipshit. Can you read? Read 8:17 and see that it was your leftist homeie that changed the subject. What are you? Stupid?

Anonymous said...

Les, Good for you. Once McClatchy and all the newspapers are done readers will quit this site. Most just come here for McClatchy news not the rants of nutcases.

I also noticed that 8:47 tells you how wrong you are but has no guts to put his/her name on it.

People who want just McClatchy news...won't be any until next week. Nothing happens on the weekend.

Anonymous said...

lol you really are just sitting there trolling the comment section on mcclatchy watch just waiting to vent your anti leftist crap HAHAHAHAH. fuckign loser

I wish you were like Les and sign your name so i can skip your crap when i come here looking for real news. Yeah, real news made by liberal newspaper employees. At least your stupidity comes out so quick on your post that is kinda like signing it

have fun with your trolling on mcclatchy watch

Anonymous said...

What? No poem 10:13? What did they do sparky? McClatchy promise you a part time gig if you could get anyone who leaks information to divulge their names? We know Les has been trying to suck up since day one. Figure it might work out different for you?

I contend that 'mainstream media' was in fact 'corporate media'. The large corporations are dying faster than you can say, 'business model collapse'

What we are seeing is the new MSM emerging in examples like McClatchy Watch blog.

It may not have the profit model like corporate media, but if you count audience and interactivity, more and more readers find their information through internet data collection.

It may not be to J-School standards, but guess what? Those standards were valued by those that held power by owning the presses.

Now anyone can own their own printing press, known as a blog, and soon anyone can own their own video web-casting channel.

good your still here because i found out who you are.

who would be-

1.anti liberal
2.bitter
3.no help to mcclatchy employees or the company as a whole
4. have nothing useful to say
5. have the time to troll the forums all day.

Well none other that Mr. GP himself

Hey, at least your Rich Bitch.

If you think the Star-Telegram is thin now, wait until the layoffs. The paper is going to change overnight into something all but useless. But maybe that is part of the genuis McClatchy grand plan.

11:11 AM Didn't they put out something to the effect that they were willing to move the editorial board to an office downtown and run a website out of there after selling the building?

Or was that someone else?

Anonymous said...

11:11 How many employees to do have now? Do you have any idea what the layoff number will be?

Anonymous said...

Any numbers for the KC Star?

Anonymous said...

I can't remember all the details, but one proposal was to keep a presence downtown if they sold the building. Another was to keep everybody downtown in space over the city's main library, I think.

Anonymous said...

The numbers were "several dozen to up to 100." That's paperwide, not just newsroom. I could be way off here, but I'm thinking there are about 100 journalists left, out of about 400 a couple of years ago. If anybody else has better numbers, please correct me.

Anonymous said...

11:29 Where are you printing the paper?

Anonymous said...

Nothing will happen in Raleigh on Monday.....it might be the end of the week, but not on Monday. supposedly the publisher has to submit a proposal then we'll all know....but they did mention in a meeting that between 20-30 newsroom employees will probably be hitting the bricks, and it could be more than that.

Anonymous said...

I wonder if the newrooms are going to be the major hits at all the papers? Maybe be so.

Anonymous said...

Never say never. Management solutions to head off employee job actions dictate surprise announcements in order to prevent employees from organizing an in kind response. Especially after the first round or two and they know everyone is fed up.

At some point the vast majority of those left will stop hoping their head is the last to roll. If they have time to think about it, closing down the building all together becomes a pretty attractive option. Going out in a blaze of glory so to speak.

Did I read that McClatchy newspapers are moving into smaller quarters? In a few months, a phone booth will be roomy enough for the Bees.

I came here once I realized how corrupt the media had become. The Sacbee needs to go bankrupt. They are a pox on journalism. The media that so willfully tanked for Obama will pay a price so high, no one could have even imagined it. McClatchy will not make it online either, too many people don’t trust them to accurately report the news. I have a front row seat watching a whole industry self-destruct. I don’t relish the loss of jobs, just the loss of corruption.

Anonymous said...

Hey Les, Why don't you start a blog just for the McClatchy news? You could call it McClatchy News Only. I bet some of your friends at the Star would help.

Anonymous said...

For liberal Democrats to come here and insult our host is arrogant. This blog is not only about you and your impending job losses. We need to revisit the blog's description.
----------
“This blog is mainly about the [spectacular train wreck at The Sacramento Bee] and its parent company, the [McClatchy Company.] But I also post about [current events,] the [Iraq war,] [politics] and [anything else that interest me.] Take a look around this blog, I hope you enjoy it.”
----------
You come here and insult other posters, try to control the conversation, and apparently have not learned a thing about your loss of credibility. If you represent most journalists, then I regret any sympathy I ever felt for people like you.

Rush Limbaugh must be doing something right. The Messiah mentions him almost daily. The ‘One’ seems to have a thin skin. Every time Barry gives him a free ad, Rush has a larger listening audience. Someone better tell Barry to stop going there, it ain’t working! It was a big mistake to let the genie out of the bottle!

GREAT QUOTE

Just a reminder: I don't waste time responding to anonymous attacks.

Also, I'd like to point out that my critics know very ilttle about about me. You do not know whom I voted for in November, whether I even voted, or whether I went to a Christian church, a Buddhist temple or a local bar this morning.

You have no idea what publications I read. For all you know, I may subscribe to both the National Review and the Nation. I may also subscribe to Jack and Jill or Highlights for Children, but I suspect those are more along the lines of what my cowardly critics can handle.

You have no idea of whether I served my country in the militay or marched against the fighting. But I'll give you a clue: John McCain and I are both veterans of the Vietnam War.

I understand that out of fear of losing their jobs, some people must post anonymously. That is fine. But those of you who just make ignorant, unfounded personal attacks and then hide behind the cloak of anonymity are no better -- actually, you are worse -- than childhood bullies who pick fights and then run home and hide behind mommy. They at least are children. You are supposed to be adults.

And to Walter Abbot, I commend you for having the courage to sign your name.

Well I will find out if my job of 19 plus years will be gone this friday at the latest. Its been a fun ride in the newspaper industry this roller coaster ride is almost over or is it. This is what has torn so many people away from trust in a company that was at one time the best company to work for in the industry. Just another sad week to come for many.

Anonymous said...

Just a reminder: I don't waste time responding to anonymous attacks.

You also don't waste time responding to legitimate rebuttals to your arguments...like a good KC Star employee.

WAY TO GO LES!!!!!!!!!!!!!]

WELL SAID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Honestly Wes, I don't give a shit what you do. How did this blog become about you? I must say, to ramble on about not responding to personal attacks, and then hurl a few personal attacks is, well, so Obama-like. So, your name is Wes, and you live in KC, WTF is the difference if I know your name or not? I don’t get that line of thinking.

Anonymous said...

What’s in a name? Is it Barry or Barack? What difference does that make? Who knows what his next moniker might be? Caesar Hussein, that has a nice ring to it.

Anonymous said...

Who is Wes?

Anonymous said...

Les, Give up they're just a bunch of losers and nutcases. They can't even post without calling anybody who disagrees with them names.

They can't deal with anybody such as yourself a man with class.

3:25 You can't even read. His name is Les!

Anonymous said...

YAWN Ok, I'll bite. Earth to Les.

Not speaking of annonimity, but MNI wise.

Les what's your basic MNI objection here?

Anonymous said...

Wes, Les, Chef, were all in the same MNI boat here damn it!

Anonymous said...

Les is like the only guy on the board who goes by his real name.

And Anon 3:25 totally disses him and calls him WES!

Brutal, absoultely BRUTAL!

Anonymous said...

This is the deal. Les is trying to get people to post their name so the KC Star, McClatchy et al can intimidate them into silence or get them fired.

It's an old leftist, gay pride tactic. Harassing phone calls, digging up dirt if they can, and when they can't, they'll do something like put the word out all over the Internet that Joe Nonconformist is a homosexual and find fellow traveler to claim that he is his homosexual lover.

It's old hat. You're ok if you agree with them, but don't toe the line and it's good nite Irene.

3:50: Fair question, amd I'll answer it.

1. Shortsighted corporate management (CEO, BoD and vice presidents) whose actions contributed to a decrease in market capitalization and a decline in stock price from 40-odd dollars when I got into it to 40-odd cents when i could use it most.

2. A news vice president that was an example of the Peter Principle at work. I've said before, there's no disputing the fact that Mr. Weaver delivered the goods at the ADN; his performance as McClatchy VP fell far short.

3. Continued spending on the Washington bureau and the foreign correspondents. They are luxuries MNI cannot afford now.

4. Overall corporate mismanagement that led to my losing my job of 22 years in November.

5. Poor, inconsistent and inconsiderate handling of the layoff situation.

6. The CEO's refusal to take a pay cut to a level more commensurate with the stock performance in the last two years.

7. The BoD's refusal to oust a CEO whose productivity the last two years has been disgraceful.

5. I will make no comments regarding Mark Zieman and Rhonda Chriss Lokeman. Both of them have been my friends for 22 years -- Mark since he was a reporter and Rhonda since she was an editorial writer -- and long before they were married. They both treated me well personally and professionally and any issues I have I will discuss only with them.

The end,

Les Weatherford

I guess we all know that corporate will decide this week on what gets whacked if they didn't already.
Good luck to you all and I hope we all survive this week.

I hope The KC Star puts out a better paper if you don't get whacked. Right now it stinks.

Anonymous said...

Les,

Very cogent and well written. I understand and I thank you!

Anonymous said...

Points 1-7 are all valid. But as to point #5 (post points 1-7), and since you've known Lokeman for so long, when exacly did she fall off the wagon?

Anonymous said...

Ruh oh someone else knows Rhonda too!

After Mcclatchy, some papers will survive, KC will be one.
So to all those smucks out there.
