THE $4 TRILLION SPLURGE: PUTTING THE MASSIVE FEDERAL SPENDING PLAN INTO PERSPECTIVE NY Post

You thought you'd had enough of depressing numbers after the stimulus package passed in February. But a reporter from the Heritage Foundation, out this week, shows that those numbers were just a fraction -- about one-fifth, to be precise -- of what the federal government will spend in 2009.

This year's $4 trillion total -- a record, even accounting for inflation -- may look like a sudden blip on Heritage's graphs, but research shows the spike is here to stay. Three years from now, when stimulus spending has slowed to a dribble, new programs and strained entitlements will bring federal expenses right back to today's "emergency spending" levels. By 2019, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid caseloads will have hit record heights, and the national debt will be nearly double what it is now.

Held hostage in North Korea (Boston Globe)

FOR NEARLY FIVE MONTHS, two American journalists have been held hostage by the government of North Korea. Most Americans, it seems, couldn’t care less. The abduction of the two women - both married, one the mother of a young daughter - hasn’t evoked one-tenth of the passion that followed the death of Michael Jackson or the arrest of Henry Louis Gates Jr. Why aren’t we up in arms over this abuse of our fellow citizens? Why is there no deafening hue and cry for their release?

1. Current TV has as one of its principle’s one Albert Gore. And you can’t embarass the Goracle, who sent these journalists to North Korea in the media.

2. Since you can’t embarass the Goracle these American jouralists don’t really matter and they’re on their own.

3. State controlled media only care about 1 and 2.

China: Hidden misery of Mao’s slave teenage brides(to outpopulate Uyghurs in Xinjiang)
(The Times UK) REMONDS ME OF HAMAS

THE film’s title, 8,000 Girls Ascend the Heavenly Mountain, suggests that Chinese audiences will see a tale of joy when it is aired on television this autumn.

It dramatises the lives of thousands of girls aged 13 to 19 who went to China’s remote far west in the 1950s to follow soldiers sent to colonise the turbulent Muslim region.

In real life it was a trip to purgatory. As shooting for the film unfolds in Beijing under the watchful gaze of party censors, an astonishing story of mass deception, forced marriages and suicides has come to light.

Elderly women have come forward to tell how they were lured to China’s new frontier by false promises of training and education - only to find themselves locked in barracks and coerced into marrying soldiers.

Chinese journalists have also discovered that Chairman Mao Tse-tung approved the dispatch of 900 prostitutes from the brothels of Shanghai to undergo “thought reform” at the hands of the troops.

{UK] Harriet Harman: you can’t trust men in power(The Times UK)

HARRIET HARMAN has demanded that one of Labour’s two top posts should always be held by a woman — because she believes men cannot be trusted to run organisations on their own.

Labour’s deputy leader secretly tried to change party rules two years ago to ensure that it could never again be led by an all-male team, but she was foiled.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Harman reiterates her belief in the principle and says her role as Gordon Brown’s second-in-command has changed for ever the way the party will be run.

“I don’t agree with all-male leaderships,” she said. “Men cannot be left to run things on their own. I think it’s a thoroughly bad thing to have a men-only leadership.”

Harman tried to change the party’s rules shortly after winning the deputy leadership contest. An insider who was involved said it was rejected out of hand by the party hierarchy.

Though socialism doesn't work whether a woman or a man runs it, she must be arguing that women make better hardcore socialists?

Patients forced to live in agony after NHS refuses to pay for painkilling injections (Telegraph U.K.)

The Government's drug rationing watchdog says "therapeutic" injections of steroids, such as cortisone, which are used to reduce inflammation, should no longer be offered to patients suffering from persistent lower back pain when the cause is not known.

Instead the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is ordering doctors to offer patients remedies like acupuncture and osteopathy.

Specialists fear tens of thousands of people, mainly the elderly and frail, will be left to suffer excruciating levels of pain or pay as much as £500 each for private treatment.

The NHS currently issues more than 60,000 treatments of steroid injections every year. NICE said in its guidance it wants to cut this to just 3,000 treatments a year, a move which would save the NHS £33 million.

BIASED MEDIA, WHAT BIASED MEDIA?Camera Hog In Chief (Forbes)

The president's media blitz may be wearing us out.

President Barack Obama appears to be breaking every record kept on U.S. presidential press coverage. Over the first six months of this year, he was cited in a staggering 1.1 million stories across mainstream, Internet and social media--an average of 6,100 references a day.

That's more than triple what Obama's last two predecessors, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, got in the mainstream press during their first six months.

The president is tagged on 216,000 YouTube videos and mentioned in an average 15,000 blog posts a week, according to Icerocket.com.

Still trying to be a Democrat
(The Longview News-Journal)

I wrote about two months ago of my attempted conversion from my conservative values to a liberal Democrat.

This has been a big-time struggle for me, as it just doesn't feel right. I must admit, however, as a new liberal thinker it's been incredible to watch the events of the past several months.

My greatest amazement is how easy it is to sucker punch the American people with the socialist agenda we liberals are trying to implement.

I had no idea how much of an obedient lapdog the TV and print media actually was for my man Obama and our Democrats in the Congress. Good gracious, I'm glad they are on my side now.

I reel in delight as I watch them bend, distort and mutilate the truth about what our liberal agenda will do to the country.

As long as the American public doesn't care, we'll pour the Kool Aid down their throat by the barrel.

Obamacare to Dump Expensive Elderly in Group Homes (Right Wing News)

...Obama keeps claiming, despite the evidence put out by the Congressional Budget Office, that his plan will lower costs.

One of those cost saving measures seems to be a patient dumping plan that will move the elderly away from more expensive medical procedures and place them in an institutionalized "home" setting reminiscent of some bad horror movie mad-house scene.

CNSNews has learned that the House bill proposes to lower hospital visits by older patients by referring them to what is being called a "medical home pilot program." This will be a new sort of institution set up to accept the elderly that isn't staffed with doctors and high cost medical equipment but is instead staffed by nurse practitioners and other less trained personnel.

Critics of the idea, though, worry that this program will amount to patient dumping.

ISLAM AND CIVILISATION (Jamie Wearing)

Islam - the religion of peace and love. Unless, of course, one is not a follower.

Six Christians were burned alive in Pakistan yesterday when hundreds of Muslims attacked and looted their homes, sparked by rumours that pages from the Qur'an had been desecrated.

The dead, including four women and a child, were killed when Christian homes were torched by hundreds of supporters of a banned Muslim organisation in the Punjabi village of Gojra, in eastern Pakistan.

If this had been six Muslims being burned alive by Christians the international media would be ablaze, if you you'll pardon the pun but the truth is that Islam is SO savage, SO barbaric, that these kinds of instances of what it's followers do to those with whom they differ is almost a matter of routine. Where is the CONDEMNATION from the Imams? Silence.....

Venezuelan regulators pull 34 radio concessions AP

ARTICLE PUNCHLINE: Chavez has said the concessions could be handed over to operators who share his vision for a socialist Venezuela…

(No worries the MSM already shares Dear Leaders vision)

Venezuelan regulators revoked the broadcast rights of 34 radio stations on Friday, deepening a rift between President Hugo Chavez’s government and the private media.

Diosdado Cabello, who heads Venezuela’s telecommunications regulatory agency, said some of the stations failed to update their registrations or let their concessions expire, while others held licenses granted to an operator who is now deceased.

The affected radio stations "will have to end transmissions once they are notified," he said.

Chavez’s government has increasingly clashed with private media in recent months and is slowly tightening its grip over the industry, raising concerns among watchdog and human rights groups that accuse the government of trying to stifle dissent.

But Cabello denied the government aims to limit freedom of expression or punish political opponents by revoking licenses.

"It’s not to persecute anyone," he said…

Wal-Mart Contests Use of Name by Canadian Union

Article Tools Sponsored By
By IAN AUSTEN
Published: July 31, 2009

OTTAWA — Wal-Mart’s feelings about unions in its stores are well known. In Quebec, the company does not want a union even breathing its name.

Wal-Mart Canada has asked a Quebec court to stop a union Web site from using the company’s name, color schemes, a variation of its logo, a parody of its slogan and even photographs of people wearing blue vests.

Wal-Mart says that it is seeking the injunction only to protect its trademarks. But the United Food and Commercial Workers Canada, which represents employees at the retailer’s only North American store with a union contract, said on Wednesday that the company was trying to thwart its organizing efforts.

“This injunction request is an over-the-top assault on freedom of speech and on our ability to effectively communicate with Wal-Mart workers,” Wayne Hanley, the union’s president for Canada said in a statement. “Wal-Mart’s response to the success of www.walmartworkerscanada.ca is just another outrageous example of how the largest retailer in the history of the world will use its bottomless legal budget to manipulate the collective bargaining process and do just about anything to discourage its associates from joining the union.”

Andrew Pelletier, a spokesman for Wal-Mart Canada, said a recent redesign of the union’s Web site “in a way we feel infringes on our trademark” led the company to seek an injunction.

“If you don’t take steps to protect your trademark, the trademark becomes vulnerable,” Mr. Pelletier said from Mississauga, Ontario, where the Canadian unit is based. “Anyone who knows Wal-Mart knows we are an advocate of free speech and open communication.”

Derek Johnstone, a spokesman for the union, said the Web site was set up in 2003. It contents are directed at Wal-Mart employees, he said, and are a mixture of negative articles about the company’s labor practices and advice about legal rights under Canadian labor laws.

Next to a large union logo, the Web site features a variation of Wal-Mart’s current symbol in which a circle of stick people holding hands replaces a ring of sticks. Next to a photograph of three people wearing blue vests is the slogan “Get Respect. Live Better!,” a play on Wal-Mart’s “Save Money. Live Better.”

On Wednesday, the union added banners reading “Under the Threat of Censorship” to the Web site.

Ariel Katz, a professor of intellectual property and Internet law at the University of Toronto, said that Canadian courts had often sided with companies in trademark and copyright lawsuits against unions.

“It’s a very serious issue, the extent to which trademark law can be used to silence speech,” he said. “The basic question of trademark is whether people who view the Web site would think it is sponsored by Wal-Mart.”

In one prominent case, the Federal Court of Canada ruled in 1996 that the Canadian Auto Workers union had violated Michelin’s copyright with fliers and posters depicting Bibendum, the Michelin tire man, about to stomp on a workers.

But Professor Katz said a recent Supreme Court of Canada decision about photocopying may strengthen the union’s case against Wal-Mart.

While both the Canadian branches of the union and Wal-Mart are based in Ontario, the company has filed its complaint with the Quebec Superior Court. Mr. Pelletier said that was partly because the Web site was in French as well as English “and in our experience Quebec courts have the most expedient processes in resolving lawsuits of this nature.”

Quebec is also the province where the union has been most successful.

In addition to the Wal-Mart store near Montreal, which received a court-imposed contract this spring, the union has organized at another Wal-Mart store and a Wal-Mart tire center. A court is also hearing a union challenge to Wal-Mart’s decision to close a store in the province after a successful union drive.

Switzerland and the United States reached an agreement in principle on Friday to settle out of court a case that sought to force the Swiss banking giant UBS to turn over the names of wealthy American clients suspected of tax evasion, a lawyer for the government said.

“We have an agreement in principal on the major issues,” Stuart Gibson, a Justice Department lawyer who is trying the case, said Friday during a conference call with the court. Mr. Gibson told Judge Alan Gold of Federal District Court in Miami that a final deal would be reached by Aug. 7.

Mr. Gibson gave no details on how many client names UBS would ultimately be forced to disclose or whether it would pay a fine. The planned settlement means that the two sides will not undergo a scheduled hearing on Monday. But Judge Gold said that if the two sides had not completed a deal by Aug. 7, they would be back in court on Aug. 10.

UBS and the Swiss government have been battling efforts by the Justice Department to force it to disclose the names of 52,000 wealthy American UBS clients suspected of offshore tax evasion. The efforts have threatened to peel back layers of Swiss banking secrecy, and have unsettled UBS, the world’s largest private bank and a pillar of the Swiss economy.

The push for the disclosure of client names, which came in a civil lawsuit filed by the Justice Department last February, has rocked the Swiss banking industry and escalated into a diplomatic incident between Switzerland and the United States.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton discussed the issue Friday at a meeting in Washington with the Swiss foreign minister, Micheline Calmy-Rey.

A spokesman for Mrs. Clinton, highlighting the diplomatic nature of the issue, told a press briefing after the meeting that “what we were facing was the prospect of a conflict between U.S. law, Swiss law, that that might in some way complicate a very strong bilateral relationship.”

“Whatever decision the parties reached would have an impact on the bilateral relationship between the United States and Switzerland, which meant that it was useful for the ministers to meet this morning,” the spokesman said.

After the February lawsuit, UBS eventually agreed to paid $780 million to settle charges that it helped wealthy Americans evade taxes on nearly $20 billion hidden in offshore accounts. One day later, the Justice Department filed a civil suit seeking to force UBS to disclose 52,000 client names. Of the names on the agency’s original list, prosecutors are focused on several thousand wealthy Americans with offshore accounts containing tens to hundreds of millions of dollars.

UBS had resisted disclosure, arguing that doing so would cause it to violate Swiss banking laws. The Swiss government has said it will block UBS from turning over the names if ultimately ordered to do so by the judge, while the Justice Department has said that it might consider indicting the bank if it refused to do so upon a judge’s order.

Earlier this month, Judge Gold asked the Justice Department whether it would consider trying to seize the bank’s American assets or place them in receivership should the bank ultimately not comply.

Strengthening its efforts to keep a deadly strain of E. coli out of meat sold to consumers, the Department of Agriculture said Friday that it would begin regular testing of meat trimmings used to make ground beef.

At the same time, the Food and Drug Administration said it was working to develop mandatory standards for growing, harvesting and processing fruits and vegetables, going well beyond the rules in place today.

The announcements were the latest signs that Washington was moving forward with efforts to overhaul the food safety system. On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed a bill to strengthen the F.D.A.’s oversight of food safety by giving it added powers and mandating more frequent inspections of food processing plants. The Senate is expected to take up similar legislation this autumn.

The Agriculture Department said it would begin regular testing of “bench trim,” the fat and meat trimmed from cuts like steaks and roasts as they are prepared in processing plants. Bench trim is normally added to other meat used in ground beef.

Government inspectors perform tests for E. coli in the slaughterhouse on most meat used in ground beef, before it goes to the processing plant. But the bench trim had not previously been tested by the inspectors, creating a potentially dangerous hole in the government’s food-safety regimen.

The bacterium Escherichia coli is common in the human intestine and is usually not dangerous. But a virulent strain known as O157:H7 has been the source of numerous outbreaks of serious food-borne illness — and many recalls of tainted ground beef — in recent years. The strain can cause fatal illness, and ground beef poses a special risk because the germ gets mixed deep into the meat, where it may survive cooking.

Jerold R. Mande, deputy under secretary for food safety at the Agriculture Department, said the government tests of bench trim were to begin in about a month. They are intended to verify testing for E. coli in hamburger that is already being done by plant operators, and many of the operators already test bench trim for the bacterium, he said.

The new rules apply to about 600 meat processing plants, where government inspectors perform a variety of tests every day the plants operate.

On average, the bench trim at an individual plant will be tested two or three times a year, for a total of 1,500 samplings nationwide over 12 months, Mr. Mande said. Those tests should enable the government to determine whether there is a pattern of E. coli contamination in bench trim.

“If it turns out in the course of doing 1,500 samples in a year we see that there is contamination coming from this,” he said, “then we’ve got to go back further up the stream and find out how they’re handling this bench trim and treat it differently.”

Scott J. Goltry, vice president of food safety and inspection services of the American Meat Institute, a trade association representing meat processors, said the industry supported the added government testing. He said plants already conducted their own tests of bench trim, in addition to doing many other tests to ensure processed meat was safe.

Bill Marler, a lawyer in Seattle who specializes in food poisoning cases, said that bench trim was suspected as a source of E. coli in many ground beef recalls. He said the new testing represented an important change. “You’re adding an additional layer of assurance that the ultimate product, the hamburger, is less likely to be contaminated,” he said.

Also on Friday, the Food and Drug Administration issued voluntary guidelines for the growing and processing of tomatoes, leafy greens and melons, three types of crops that account for the greatest number of cases of illness from eating tainted produce. The guidelines were a first step toward creating a system of mandatory regulations for the handling of produce.

They are similar to procedures that have been worked out by the produce industry and the food agency after highly publicized food scares in recent years. As a result

He also said an overhaul of the health care system is key to helping reduce the deficit.

AP -- He's become a publicity nightmare for CNN, embarrassed his boss and hosted a show that seemed to contradict the network's "no bias" brand. And on top of all that, his ratings are slipping.

How does Lou Dobbs keep his job?

It's not a simple answer. CNN insists it is standing behind Dobbs, despite calls for his head from critics of his reporting on "birthers" - those who believe President Barack Obama wasn't born in the United States despite convincing evidence to the contrary. The "birthers" believe Obama was born in Kenya, and thus not eligible to be president.

Dobbs' work has been so unpopular that even Ann Coulter has criticized him.

Dobbs has acknowledged that he believes Obama was born in Hawaii. But he gives airtime to disbelievers, and has said the president should try to put questions fully to rest by releasing a long version of his birth certificate. He's twice done stories on his show after the public leak of a memo from CNN U.S. President Jon Klein saying that "it seems this story is dead."

Klein said those stories were OK because they were about the controversy and weren't actually questioning the facts. But critics suggest Klein is parsing words, that even raising the issue lends it credence.

Joked The Washington Post's Lisa de Moraes: it "explains their upcoming documentary: `The World: Flat. We Report - You Decide."'

Dobbs hasn't made it any easier by using his radio show to fight back at critics, who he called "limp-minded, lily-livered lefty lemmings." He considered going on CNN tormentor Bill O'Reilly's Fox News show to thank him (O'Reilly says the birthers are wrong, but he defended Dobbs' right to talk about it).

"He's embarrassed himself and he's embarrassed CNN," said Brooks Jackson, a former CNN correspondent. "And that's not a good thing for any network that wants to be seen as a reputable, nonpartisan news organization."

So who needs the headache?

Klein said Dobbs does a smart newscast that explores issues that get little in-depth attention elsewhere, such as trade with China, health care funding and the stimulus plan. He suggested Dobbs' CNN work is unfairly lumped in with his unrelated radio show, and that he's judged on the show he did a couple of years ago, when Dobbs became a political target for his campaigning against illegal immigration.

The two men sat down after last year's election to make changes, aware that the anti-immigrant Dobbs' image ran counter to the brand CNN was trying to create. CNN calls itself the network of unbiased reporting compared to conservative commentators on Fox and liberal ones at MSNBC.

Since then, Dobbs has been doing a relatively straight newscast, Klein said.

"He brings more than three decades of experience reporting and broadcasting the news," Klein said, "and that's very valuable to a news network."

You had your way,
Now you must pay
I'm glad that you're sorry now.

Consider yourself lucky. I had considered a link to Obama's nude momma, or a Tiny URL to the hairy legged beast.

Obama theme song:

CHAMELEON
Artist(Band):Creedence Clearwater Revival

You took me runnin' up a wrong way street.
When we got there, you said, "Can't you read ?"
I must be blind, but now and then I see
Another number where mine used to be.

CHORUS:
You keep on changin' your face, like a Chameleon.
You keep on changing your face like a Chameleon.

I say what's up, and then you say it's down.
I see triangles, and you say it's round, round, round.
Saw an empty glass; you said it's full.
Lord, it's so hot, then you come on cool, cool.

Our song-writing Sweetie thinks she's amusing. She even posts compliments to herself and thinks nobody knows.

Our douchebag know-it-all zealot thinks he's amusing. He even posts stupid comments to amuse himself and thinks nobody laughs at his sorry sweet-seat loser ass.

I'm 2:41, not the songwriting sweetie, just an old school conservative red neck who loves that good 'ol rock-n-roll. I saw an appropriate tune and thought it fit the occasion...(no cute little HTML music notes)

Remember this line...I gotta shot gun rifle and a 4 wheel drive,
A country boy can survive.

BTW if I ever see you playin' a banjo out in the woods...

One more thought, I used to work under the Pruitt at one of his little publications, so using songs to emphasize a point, or add a little humor while giving someone the shaft rubbed off on me.

Next time you're out in the woods, try to leave the pig alone.

Don't worry, you're safe.
