Wait a minute!... new management proposal out of Fresno... "no furloughs in 2009 if burndown proposal is approved" (updated)

Surprising news out of Fresno... just days after the Guild rejected a management proposal for vacation burndowns, the Fresno Bee Guild has scheduled a vote on a new management proposal guaranteeing no furloughs in 2009 if the Guild approves a revised vacation burndown proposal.

Our Guild negotiators are recommending a YES vote for approval based on the Company's written agreement that it will not implement unpaid furloughs in 2009 (without first seeking our approval in the event of extreme economic need) if the vacation "burn-down" proposal is ratified. In addition, the proposal has been revised since our previous vote.

Paragraph 7 has been changed to read: "At its discretion, the Company has the right in 2010 to implement mandatory scheduling of vacation hours under the same terms and conditions applicable to full time non-bargaining unit employees."

Previously, this provision read as follows: "At its discretion, the Company has the right to implement mandatory scheduling of vacation hours in years beyond 2009 under the same terms and conditions as those applicable to full-time non-bargaining unit employees." All other terms are the same as before.

Update: the proposal isn't so generous when you realize there are just 4 months left in 2009... "Do ya think management decided to drop the Furlough Bomb in 2010 - say in January?"

Gee, I wonder which one favors the company bottomline and future layoff patterns? A NO vote by any newspaper union is a heroic gesture.

Look at it this way: There's only four months remaining in 2009, barely enough time to implement all the furloughs needed. Do ya think management decided to drop the Furlough Bomb in 2010 - say in January? What do you want to bet?

The Sac Bee guild site should have this information posted in about three months.

This tells me McClatchy is heading for another round of job cuts. Good thing I'm working on getting the hell out.

This is just too funny. The SCAB's at the Sac Bee must be catching hell.

Remember SCAB's. Just say no.
