ACORN Selects 'Investigator' Instead of the 'Auditor' It Promised; AP Cooperates With the Water-down

Last Wednesday, ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis promised that her organization would conduct a "total audit," and would name an independent auditor by Friday ("within 48 hours").

Later, it said it would do so yesterday.

The group finally acted today, in totally underwhelming fashion.

We're not going to get a "total audit" after all. Instead, there's going to be an "internal investigation," and it will be conducted by former Massachusetts Attorney General Scott Harshbarger.

Correction: ACORN's Troubles

WASHINGTON — In a Sept. 19 story about the community organizing group ACORN, The Associated Press, based on an account in The Washington Post, erroneously quoted a conservative journalist saying he targeted the organization for hidden-camera videos because its voter-registration drives bring minority voters to the polls.

The Washington Post on Tuesday printed a correction about the quote.

Although ACORN registers people mostly from those groups, the maker of the videos, James E. O'Keefe, did not specifically mention minorities, the newspaper said.

BIAS? WHAT BIAS? And the false quote didn’t come from a “Conservative” blogger, IT CAME FROM DAILY KOS......

Turbo Tax Timmy censored cap-and-tax cost estimate (mypetjawa)

Uh, so much for that "transparency" thing.

Congressman Fred Upton has sent a letter (below the fold) to Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner demanding that he release estimates of the cost of Obama's cap-and-tax proposal that has already passed the House.

Upton's letter states that:
In response to a FOIA request, Administration officials deliberately censored figures that specify the annual costs cap-and-tax will impose.

So what got censored?

I am particularly interested in the one-page document entitled Domestic Climate Policy that was prepared by Judson Jaffe.

The Jaffe document omits important figures, most glaringly, on the annual costs under a cap-and-trade regime, stating, “It will raise energy prices and impose annual costs on the order of XXXXXXXX dollars.”

Funny how that figure got left out. CHANGE!

ABC Notices Obama Administration's Effort to Suppress Criticism of ObamaCare

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's decision to go to the Senate floor on Tuesday to call out the Obama administration for using the full power of a federal regulatory agency to suppress free speech -- specifically, to silence Humana's predictions about the impact of proposed ObamaCare cuts to the Medicare Advantage program -
- led ABC, but not CBS or NBC, to air a story on the “gag order.”

ABC's story began with a McConnell soundbite (“'Shut up,' the government says, 'don't communicate with your customers. Be quiet and get in line,'”), before reporter Jonathan Karl explained McConnell was referring to the “Department of Health and Human Services, telling insurance companies who serve Medicare recipients, to stop 'misleading' and 'confusing' mailings, saying, quote:

'We are instructing you to immediately discontinue all such mailings, and remove any related materials from your Web sites.'”

Karl continued: “The extraordinary order comes in response to a mailing the Humana insurance company sent to customers in the Medicare Advantage program.

The Humana mailing warned that because of Medicare cuts in the health care reform bills, quote, 'millions of seniors and disabled individuals could lose many important benefits and services.'”

On Monday, HHS offered “guidance” to silence criticism: “MEDICARE ISSUES NEW GUIDANCE TO INSURANCE COMPANIES ON MEDICARE MAILINGS.”

GOP Report Charges AARP Getting "Kickbacks" In Dem Health Care Bills (American Spectator)

One of the subplots to the health care debate I've been following is the cozy relationship between AARP and the Obama administration, as the group has thrown its full-throated support behind the Democrats' health care push even though their membership comes from the age group most opposed to Democratic health care proposals.

Today, House Republicans have issued a report providing evidence that AARP is in a position to recieve tens of millions of dollars in "kickbacks" if Democratic health care legislation becomes law.

President Obama and Democrats have proposed saving money to pay for health care legislation, in part, by cutting $162 billion in payments to Medicare Advantage, which allows Medicare recipients to choose privately-administered coverage.

If these changes go through, millions of seniors who have chosen Medicare Advantage would lose their current coverage, forcing them into government-administered plans with less generous benefits.

As a result, many of them would have to purchase policies to supplement traditional Medicare. Enter AARP.

Report: Obama to Raise Bar for State Secrets (Foxnews)

The Obama administration will unveil a new policy on Wednesday that will make it much more difficult for the government to claim it is protecting state secrets when it hides details of sensitive national security strategies, according to a published report.

Under the new policy, agencies will have to convince Attorney General Eric Holder and a team of Justice Department lawyers that release of certain information would significantly hurt "national defense" or "foreign relations," The Washington Post reported, citing two senior Justice Department officials.

Obama’s New Claim That 30 Million 'Cannot' Get Health Insurance Not Supported by Census Bureau (CNSNews.com)

In his Sept. 9 speech to Congress, President Barack Obama unveiled a new claim that 30 million Americans “cannot” get health insurance, but this statistic is not supported by the government's latest definitive data produced by the Census Bureau on Americans lacking health insurance.

In his speech to Congress, Obama said, “There are now more than 30 million American citizens who cannot get coverage” – presumably taking into account conservative critics’ observation that Obama's earlier claims that 46 million Americans lacked health insurance was contradicted by Census Bureau data that indicated that more than 9 million of that number were not in fact U.S. citizens.

The NEA Scandal: All Your Art Are Belong to Us (Pajamas MEdia)

Unless you are old enough or foolish enough to still try to extract something like news out of the mainstream media, you probably already know about the NEA phone call transcripts.

They were released today through the work of artist/blogger Patrick Courrielche at Andrew Breitbart’s new website Big Government.

Breitbart and his merry gang seem to have taken it upon themselves to print all the news that apparently isn’t fit to print, also known as “the truth about the Obama administration and their friends.”....

The transcripts prove, despite the earlier denials and obfuscations of the participants, that officials from the White House, the National Endowment of the Arts and a federally overseen initiative called United We Serve joined in hosting a conference call on August 10th with a group of artists.

The point of the call was to cajole these artists into making artistic propaganda in support of President Barack Obama’s agenda.

There is so very much to be disgusted by here that it’s hard to know what to gag on first. The NEA is the largest single funder of art in the country. They give away tens of millions of bucks in grants to artists and art organizations..

At Least 6 Federal Laws and Regulations Violated By the NEA Conference Call (Big Hollywood)

Yesterday, I posted about the NEA conference call’s clear and obvious violations of the Anti-Lobbying Act (19 U.S. Code §1913), which explicitly provides:

“No part of the money appropriated by any enactment of Congress shall, in the absence of express authorization by Congress, be used directly or indirectly to pay for any personal service, advertisement, telegram, telephone, letter, printed or written matter, or other device, intended or designed to influence in any manner a Member of Congress, a jurisdiction, or an official of any government, to favor, adopt, or oppose by vote or otherwise, any legislation, law, ratification, policy, or appropriation, whether before or after the introduction of any bill, measure or resolution proposing such legislation, law, ratification, policy or appropriation …”

The Anti-Lobbying Act, according to government handbooks, prevents government employees from engaging in “substantial ‘grass roots’ lobbying campaigns …

expressly urging individuals to contact government officials in support of or opposition to legislation ….

Provid[ing] administrative support for lobbing activities of private organizations …”

Violation of this law, in turn, violates 31 U.S. Code §1352, which, if read broadly, bans the use of federal funds for lobbying by the recipients:

“funds appropriated by any Act [may not be] expended by the recipient of a Federal contract, grant, loan, or cooperative agreement to pay any person for influencing or attempting to influence an officer or employee of any agency, a Member of Congress, an officer or employee of Congress, or an employee of a Member of Congress in connection with any Federal action …”

'Obamamania' Cooling Off Fast Among Young (AP)

CHICAGO -- Young Americans showed their collective power when they helped vote President Obama into office. Inspired by his message of "change," they knocked on doors, spread flyers, voted for him by a 2-1 margin, and partied like rock-the-vote stars when he won.

Since the election, though, that fervor has died down _ noticeably.

And while young people remain the president's most loyal supporters in opinion polls, a lot of people are wondering why that age group isn't doing more to build upon their newfound reputation as political influencers.

The administration's handling of Afghanistan policy has been amateur hour. The leak of General Stanley McChrystal's assessment of the dire situation there faces President Obama with by far his most serious foreign-policy challenge.

After 'Inappropriate' NEA Conference Call, White House Pushes New Guidelines (ABC)

An August 10, 2009 National Endowment for the Arts conference call in which artists were asked to help support President Obama's agenda -- a call that at least one good government group called "inappropriate" -- has prompted the White House to issue new guidelines to prevent such a call from ever happening again.

NY Gov Paterson: Obama’s just cranky because he hasn’t accomplished jack (Hot Air)

Currently blaring at the top of the page on Drudge. I can’t tell anymore: Is this racist or not?

If not, I think he just won my vote.

I understand the president’s concern, but I understand the concern of staff members at the White House.

If you look at it from their perspective, they haven’t exactly been able to govern in the first year of their administration the way other administrations have, where you would theoretically have a period in which the new administration is allowed to pass some of the needed legislation.

Every state accepted stimulus money – some said they weren’t, but all accepted stimulus money – it was shocking that the vote on the stimulus money for the ARRA went along party lines.

Here, with the healthcare legislation, they’re talking about negotiating to get one Republican senator to vote with them – they can’t get one Republican?

It’s not them, it just seems to be the point of view that: what we’re gonna do, in the middle of a recession – and it’s a good thing that neither of the political parties were thinking of doing this in the Great Depression – but in the middle of the recession is:

‘we’re going to leave off, sit around, and blame the other side.’ See, it’s all “their fault.”

Coming on top of a dismal September -- traditionally a big month for magazines -- the October numbers bode ill for any potential turnaround in the crucial fourth-quarter holiday season.

U.S. charges Obama fund-raiser in $290 million fraud (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hassan Nemazee, a fund-raiser for Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and other Democrats, has been indicted for defrauding Bank of America, HSBC and Citigroup Inc out of more than $290 million in loan proceeds, U.S. prosecutors said on Monday.

The announcement follows last month's indictment of Nemazee, head of a private equity firm and an Iranian American Political Action Committee board member, on one count of defrauding Citigroup's Citibank.

The new indictment adds allegations that he defrauded two other banks, Bank of America and HSBC Bank USA, in a similar fashion by falsifying documents and signatures to purportedly show he had hundreds of millions worth of collateral.

Bank of America is ACORN ‘Partner’ and Major Funder (NLPC)

Bank of America has received $45 billion in taxpayer TARP funds, and has slashed its dividend to a penny. Yet it is one of ACORN and its affiliates' biggest funders.

Our review of annual tax returns for the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, Inc. for the last three years (2006, 2007, 2008) found more than $3.6 million in grants to ACORN and its affiliates.

Those grants include a grant of $2 million to ACORN Housing, Inc. last year, and direct grants to ACORN Housing, Inc. offices in Baltimore, Maryland and San Bernardino, California, the locations of undercover video stings.

On its website, ACORN Housing, Inc. describes its relationship with Bank of America as a “partnership.” The Bank of America website lists no less than 26 ACORN offices where:

Bank of America works with Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) Housing to provide special mortgage products to potential homeowners in NAME OF CITY.

A “shield law” that could make journalists virtually untouchable by federal prosecutors was stalled in the Senate over concerns raised by both Republicans and the Department of Justice.

These concerns could cause the bill to stall permanently.

But wait! Liberals believe that a business company, or market, for that matter, can never self-regulate itself.

Yet, they are 100% sure that ‘journalists’ can regulate, behave and report facts in an unbiased manner.

The Obama Doctrine - Capitulation sugarcoated with smart words (Washington Times)

Undermine our allies. Embolden our enemies. Diminish our country.

Those nine words define the Obama doctrine with respect to American security policy. All three elements were much in evidence in the president's benighted decision last week to cancel the "third site" for intercontinental-range missile defenses in Eastern Europe.

They will be on display as well during this week's several conclaves with foreign leaders.

The cumulative effect is predictable: A world in which the United States has fewer friends, more enemies and fewer options for assuring its security.

Media Dozes While Social Security Is on the Verge of Negative Cash Flow (NewsBusters)

Ed Morrissey at Hot Air had the catch of the day yesterday when he revealed, based on Congressional Budget Office internal projections distributed to Congress during the summer, that the Social Security system will spend more cash than it takes in during the government's next fiscal year ending September 30, 2010.

Read about it there, or here, because you won't see the establishment media acknowledge the existence of these revelations.

Morrissey isn't clear as to when the report was prepared, but if it dates back to July or even early- mid-August, it's possible that Social Security will show a measly positive cash flow of less than $10billion when the dust settles on the current fiscal year that will end next week, compared to +$72 billion a year ago.

That's because the decay in Treasury's cash collections during the current quarter has been that bad.

UN Declares Dictator Fidel Castro a "World Hero" (WTF) OpenMarket.org

The UN has declared Fidel Castro, the longtime Communist dictator of Cuba, the “World Hero of Solidarity.” Castro killed thousands and thousands of people during his rule, torturing some to death (including a few American citizens), and Cuba remains an oppressive dictatorship even today.

The award was presented to Castro by the President of the UN General Assembly, (Nicaragua's) Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann. D’Escoto Brockmann also successfully lobbied the Obama Administration to demand that Honduras allow the return to power of its ex-president and would-be dictator, Manuel Zelaya.

Marxism seems to be back in fashion in Washington these days...

The race-baiting liberal Congresswoman Diane Watson (D-CA) recently praised Fidel Castro as a genius who “kicked out the wealthy” from Cuba.

Many officials in the Obama Administration are sympathetic to Marxist regimes.

For example, Obama’s appointee to be the FCC’s “diversity officer” is Mark Lloyd, a big fan of Venezuela’s socialist dictator, Hugo Chavez.

Although Chavez has shot unarmed demonstrators, Lloyd has called socialist Venezuela a model, praised its authoritarian leader’s “incredible revolution” and defended his attacks on independent media.

Obama’s nominee to be Assistant Secretary of State, Arturo Valenzuela, has a reputation as a loud defender of Venezuelan dictator Chavez’s terrible record on freedom of the press.

By contrast, the Obama Administration is extremely hostile to non-communist Honduras and its democratically-elected legislature, demanding that they allow the return to power of Honduras’s bullying ex-president and would-be dictator.

The ex-president’s removal was perfectly constitutional, say many experts, such as attorneys Octavio Sanchez, Miguel Estrada, and Dan Miller, former Assistant Secretary of State Kim Holmes, and Stanford’s William Ratliff.

Barack Obama, College Administrator (National Review)

Our commander-in-chief seems to think he’s president of the University of America. ----

If you are confused by the first nine months of the Obama administration, take solace that there is at least a pattern.

The president, you see, thinks America is a university and that he is our campus president. Keep that in mind, and almost everything else makes sense.

Obama went to Occidental, Columbia, and Harvard without much of a break, taught at the University of Chicago, and then surrounded himself with academics, first in his stint at community organizing and then when he went into politics.

It shows. In his limited experience, those who went to Yale or Harvard are special people, and the Ivy League environment has been replicated in the culture of the White House.

Note how baffled the administration is by sinking polls, tea parties, town halls, and, in general, “them” — the vast middle class, which, as we learned during the campaign, clings to guns and Bibles, and which has now been written off as blinkered, racist, and xenophobic.

The earlier characterization of rural Pennsylvania has been expanded to include all of Middle America.
