Leaked emails show global warming scientists conspired to hide data... has anybody seen the media? **updated**

Just like the ACORN and Van Jones scandals, if you want to know what is going on in this case you'll have to follow FOX or the blogs because the MSM hasn't started covering it.

Here's what happened: somebody hacked into one of the world's leading global warming research centers and downloaded hundreds of emails from the leading lights of the global warming alarmist community. The emails have been published and they show a conspiracy to hide data that is detrimental to global warming alarmism.

Here's an overview:

Keep checking here

Update: A reader points out the New York Times covered the story today.
.
Update #2: Good analysis of the NYT article at Bookworm. Bottom line: the NYT wants you to believe even though these climate change guys were paranoid, vindictive, secretive, and periodically dishonest, we should definitely trust them.

New Documentary Challenges Gore's 'Inconvenient Truth' on Global Warming (Another nail in coffin)Fox News

Al Gore's award-winning global warming film "An Inconvenient Truth," socked two years ago by a British court ruling that found several errors, is facing additional scrutiny with the release of a new documentary that seeks to rebut many of Gore's claims.

In Gore's film, directed by Davis Guggenheim and released in 2006, the former vice president argues that humans are causing climate change, a problem he says is the biggest moral challenge facing the globe.

If humans don't act to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases, Gore contends, the deaths caused by climate change will double in 25 years to 300,000 people a year

Hackers 'expose global warming con'
(Daily Mail UK)

: Sceptics claim that leaked emails reveal research centre massaged temperature data

One of the world’s leading climate change research centres has been accused of manipulating data on global warming after thousands of private emails and documents were leaked.

Hackers targeted the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit and published the files, including some personal messages, on the internet.

Among the most damaging is one which appears to suggest using a ‘trick’ to massage years of temperature data to ‘hide the decline’.

All these stories are missing the larger story here.

The story isn’t that they tried to make global warming out of thin air.

The story is that they:

1. falsely improved the correlation of their data to human activity

2. suppressed dissent

3. avoided skeptics and critical reviews

4. falsified the certainty of their analysis to push for stronger action by the IPCC

and more

Because everyone is getting the story wrong, this is allowing the Global Warming Alarmists to dismiss this story in the press.

These people need drummed out of their jobs for the deception they were orchestrating.

A common thread in these emails is, “fill in the gaps”, we know it is there so we are just fixing the data so the non-scientist can see it.

These guys were so deep in it that they can’t see they are just a bunch of partisan liars. (hear DeathCare)

This University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit is just one of many researchers that are making a pile off this scam. They nor algore will give up this cash-cow without a big fight.

The Alarmists Do "Science": A Case Study (PowerLine)

A fascinating, hot-off-the-presses story emerges from the emails that were hacked yesterday from the University of East Anglia's Hadley Climatic Research Centre. It is one of many exchanges that shed light on the priority that the global warming alarmists give to politics and career advancement over science.

The story began when Steve McIntyre, the same researcher who was largely responsible for destroying Michael Mann's "hockey stick" graph purporting to show unprecedented warming in the 20th century, turned his attention to a famous article published by Keith Briffa of East Anglia's CRU in 2000

This article analyzed the diameters of tree rings, including rings from an area called Yamal in Siberia, and conveniently generated another hockey-stick shaped graph.

You can read an account of the ensuing controversy here. McIntyre's work appeared to show that Briffa had cherry-picked trees in order to get the result he was looking for.

One fact that this story highlights is that global warming alarmists publish their results in scientific journals, but refuse to make the underlying data publicly available so that the validity of their analyses can be checked.

McIntyre's revelations caused a firestorm of controversy, in response to which the alarmist community circled its wagons to fend off the threat from an outsider. This process can be clearly seen in the East Anglia emails.

The whole tone of e-mails dating back to 1996 is routinely defensive, strategic, accusatory and collusionous. These scientists get in endless feedback loops re-explaining several topics.

The missing data associated with Mann's original studies of the 80’s is explained many different ways over the years until finally, it was suggested that the data was insignificant and couldn't be found because it was so old.

The the Brita study that tried to replicate what Mann did by some “updated” means exposed the same flaw and he got caught.

yup, definitely nothing out there.

The writer understands that the basic methodologies of science are being violated in every direction, and puts it all together beautifully.

No question that this whole thing was a fraud, which was performed deliberately and followed by a deliberate coverup, in the interests of fame, fortune, and lots of government gravy.

Sure, it’s ideological as well. The perps are all leftists. But it’s ideological in the same way that Lenin was ideological.

They did it in order to acquire power and control and wealth, with a thin veneer of doing it all “for the people” or “for the planet.”

Who leaked the Hadley CRU files and why (examiner.com)

The anonymous tipster, whom many people initially assumed had "hacked" into the computers at the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia (repeatedly called the "Hadley CRU," by mistake), might in fact be a CRU insider who released the files for his own reasons.

The user, known only as "FOIA" (which now appears to be a reference to the British equivalent of the US Freedom of Information Act), left only one comment on The Air Vent to announce his release of his 61-MB ZIP archive.

He has never been heard from since, nor has anyone stepped forward claiming to be that person since the story became widely known.

Coca-Cola leads cheering section for 1-world climate change taxes

Coca-Cola is spearheading a coalition of more than 100 companies pushing a United Nations climate treaty to bind the U.S. to cap-and-trade emissions regulation, commit the world's wealthiest nations to a potential $10 trillion in foreign aid and, possibly, form a proposed international "super-grid" for regulating and distributing electric power worldwide.

Together with the SAP and Siemens corporations, Coca-Cola launched a website called Hopenhagen, leading up to the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, which opens on Dec. 7. The website invites the citizens of the world to sign a petition demanding world leaders draft binding agreements on climate change and advertises, as of today, "16 days left to seal the deal."

Other "friends" of Hopenhagen include media outlets Newsweek, Discovery Channel, Huffington Post, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, The Wall Street Journal and Clear Channel, among others, Internet giants Yahoo, Google and AOL and dozens of other companies and organizations.

The Death Blow to Climate Science (Canada Free Press)

Global Warming is often called a hoax. I disagree because a hoax has a humorous intent to puncture pomposity.

In science, such as with the Piltdown Man hoax, it was done to expose those with fervent but blind belief. The argument that global warming is due to humans, known as the anthropogenic global warming theory (AGW) is a deliberate fraud.

I can now make that statement without fear of contradiction because of a remarkable hacking of files that provided not just a smoking gun, but an entire battery of machine guns.

List of the offenses:

1) Illegal resistance to FOIA requests

2) Tampering with scientific data to support CAGW

3) Probable destruction of data to prevent peer replication (or not) of results

4) Suppression of scientific data that contradicted their theories

5) Suppression of opposing scientific viewpoints in peer reviewed publications (then claiming that due to few peer reviewed papers being published the other side had no evidence)

6) Guidelines for brainwashing the gullible masses with their viewpoint

7) Probable money laundering

Several major players (including the creator of the “hockey stick” graph) are in big trouble.

Best line of the article:

"Jones claims the files were obtained illegally as if that absolves the content. It doesn’t and it is enough to destroy all their careers."

Quite. That might make it difficult to prosecute Jones for fraud.

But as for scientific reputation, you can't squeeze toothpaste back into the tube.

Left-wing fascists, epitomized by the likes of scum like Obama, Gore, Clinton, etc. will tell any lie to get what they want. And what they want is to destroy the United States and Western civilization. Since the 60s they have come perilously close to their goal.

With Obama we have reached the very bottom. He is a deeply stupid, corrupt, affirmative-action parasite who has nothing but contempt for Whites. Obama is a left-wing fascist who has already defined his domestic opponents as potential terrorists. Like Lenin and Stalin before him he elevates criminals affiliated with the Black Panthers, La Raza and ACORN to positions of respect and authority.

We are in the hands of an angry, overgrown adolescent who believes his every act of corruption and illegal abuse of power is an act of moral superiority. Obama is a traitor and the logical conclusion of the last 50 years of left-wing policies. When he lies, when he fails, when he destroys this country utterly he will blame us. He doesn’t even have the sense to hide his malignant, hostile intentions.

Hacked E-Mail Is New Fodder for Climate Dispute (NY Times)

Hundreds of private e-mail messages and documents hacked from a computer server at a British university are causing a stir among global warming skeptics, who say they show that climate scientists conspired to overstate the case for a human influence on climate change.

The e-mail messages, attributed to prominent American and British climate researchers, include discussions of scientific data and whether it should be released, exchanges about how best to combat the arguments of skeptics,...

--snip--

In several e-mail exchanges, Kevin Trenberth, a climatologist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and other scientists discuss gaps in understanding of recent variations in temperature. Skeptic Web sites pointed out one line in particular: “The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t,” Dr. Trenberth wrote...

--snip--

Dr. Trenberth said Friday that he was appalled at the release of the e-mail messages.

But he added that he thought the revelations might backfire against climate skeptics. He said that he thought that the messages showed “the integrity of scientists.” Still, some of the comments might lend themselves to being interpreted as sinister.

In a 1999 e-mail exchange about charts showing climate patterns over the last two millenniums, Phil Jones, a longtime climate researcher at the East Anglia Climate Research Unit, said he had used a “trick” employed by another scientist, Michael Mann, to “hide the decline” in temperatures.

Dr. Mann, a professor at Pennsylvania State University, confirmed in an interview that the e-mail message was real. He said the choice of words by his colleague was poor but noted that scientists often used the word “trick” to refer to a good way to solve a problem, “and not something secret.”

White House Adviser Rejects Idea of Limited Climate Package
Wall Street Journal

- Browner Says Obama Administration Is Seeking Measures to Include Entire Economy

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration's top climate adviser on Friday called for "comprehensive energy reform" and threw cold water on the idea of a more modest climate package that would apply mandatory reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions only to electric utilities.

The Senate has sidelined until at least next spring a bill to cap U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions and create a system for companies to acquire and trade pollution permits -- a system called "cap and trade" by proponents and "cap and tax" by opponents.

Republicans and some conservative Democrats are opposed to a climate bill passed by the House, and a separate Senate measure.

Carol Browner, an adviser to President Barack Obama on energy and climate, said Friday at a conference organized by the American Council on Renewable Energy that the administration still wants a bill for the entire U.S. economy. "We believe that we need comprehensive energy reform," she said.

What I find disturbing is the media coverage on this expose of the junk science of global warming. I went to the following web sites:

CNN
Washington Post
Boston Globe
Boston Herald
New York Times
LA Times
Wall Street Journal
Arizona Star
San Francisco Chronicle
Denver Post
Miami Herald
Chicago Sun-Times
Kansas City Star
Seattle Times
Seattle Post-Intelligencer
Drudge
MSNBC
ABC News
CBS News

At each website, I searched for the following words, each search done independently as a single word: CLIMATE, GLOBAL, WARM, HOAX, EMAIL, HACK.

Of all the websites there were no relevant hits at all except for TWO sites.

One was Drudge, and the other was the New York Times, which had a surprisingly balanced article.

I forgot Fox, but I understand they are covering it.

Hacked Emails Show Climate Science Ridden with Rancor (Wall Street Jorunal)

The picture that emerges of prominent climate-change scientists from the more than 3,000documents and emails accessed by hackers and put on the Internet this week is one of professional backbiting and questionable scientific practices.

It could undermine the idea that the science of man-made global warming is entirely settled just weeks before a crucial climate-change summit.

Researchers at the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, England, were victims of a cyberattack by hackers sometime Thursday.

A collection of emails dating back to the mid-1990s as well as scientific documents were splashed across the Internet.

University officials confirmed the hacker attack, but couldn't immediately confirm the authenticity of all the documents posted on the Internet.

The publicly posted material includes years of correspondence among leading climate researchers, most of whom participate in the preparation of climate-change reports for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the authoritative summaries of global climate science that influence policy makers around the world.

Anonymous said...

The most important thing that these emails are conclusive on is the fact that these researchers had an agenda to promote Human Induced Global Warming.

Again and Again, efforts were undertaken with the collaboration of Journalists, Other Scientists, and Scientific Journals to marginalize any dissenting views or research that tended to either minimize the impact of Human Activities or the Urgency of the Action being Promoted.

http://www.eddriscoll.com/archives/014578.php

The pattern of falsifying appearances began early. Although he works at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Stephen Schneider was heavily employed in the work of the IPCC as this biography notes.

Much of Schneider’s time is taken up by what he calls his “pro bono day job” for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

He was a Coordinating Lead Author in Working Group II of the IPCC from 1997 to 2001 and a lead author in Working Group I from 1994to 1996.

Currently, he is a Coordinating Lead Author for the controversial chapter on “Assessing Key Vulnerabilities and the Risks from Climate Change,” in short, defining “dangerous” climate change.” - Pubmedcentral.nih.gov

He continued this work by helping prepare the Summary for Policymakers (SPM) of the Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) released in April 2007.

Schneider, among others, created the appearance that the Summary was representative of the Science Report. However, he provides an early insight into the thinking when speaking about global warming to Discovery magazine (October 1989) he said scientists need, “to get some broader based support, to capture the public’s imagination...

that, of course, entails getting loads of media coverage. So we have to offer up some scary scenarios, make simplified dramatic statements and make little mention of any doubts we may have...each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective, and being honest.”

The last sentence is deeply disturbing-there is no decision required.

Hacked E-Mails Appear to Indicate Global Warming Fraud PATTERICO

Ed Morrissey explains:

Controversy has exploded onto the Internet after a major global-warming advocacy center in the UK had its e-mail system hacked and the data published on line.

The director of the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit confirmed that the e-mails are genuine — and Australian publication Investigate and the Australian Herald-Sun report that those e-mails expose a conspiracy to hide detrimental information from the public that argues against global warming . . .

Via Instapundit, there is a summary of the relevant e-mails. The author cautions:

General reaction seems to be that the CRUgate emails are genuine, but with the caveat that there could be some less reliable stuff slipped in.

I don’t feel scientifically qualified to have a firm opinion about man-made global warming, but you can consider me a cautious “man-made global warming skepticism skeptic.” (That’s not a typo.)

I have seen bad arguments on both sides of the debate — and I think reducing pollution and greenhouse gases is a worthy goal regardless of the truth of claims regarding man-made global warming.

But if the advocates of man-made global warming wanted to undermine their credibility, this would be one of the best ways to do it.

P.S. I don’t support hacking anyone’s e-mail account. But the leftists and the press didn’t seem to care much when it happened to Sarah Palin.

Let’s see whether news stories are more concerned with how this became public, as opposed to the information itself. Why do I have a feeling the hacking is going to be the only story?

How To Propagandize ‘Climate Change’ (Sweetness-Light)

This is just one example of the hundreds of documents and thousands of emails that have been recovered from Britain’s Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, we noted earlier.

This is a pamphlet (a pdf file) from a company called Futerra, which claims to be “the sustainability communications agency”:

The Rules Of The Game
Evidence base for the Climate Change Communications Strategy

The game is communicating climate change; the rules will help us win it.

Futerra – Recommendations to the Climate Change Communications Working Group:

The principles of climate change communication

Why were the principles created?

The game is communicating climate change; the rules will help us win it.

These principles were created as part of the UK Climate Change Communications Strategy, an evidence-based strategy aiming to change public attitudes towards climate change in the UK.

This is a ‘short version’ of a far longer document of evidence that can be found at www.defra.gov.uk.

There is plenty of evidence relating to attitudes towards and behaviour on climate change, general environmental behaviour change and the whole issue of sustainable development communication.

As we reviewed the research for these principles, one ‘überprinciple’ emerged:

"Changing attitudes towards climate change is not like selling a particular brand of soap – it’s like convincing someone to use soap in the first place."

At first glance, some of the principles may seem counter-intuitive to those who have been working on sustainable development or climate change communications for many years.

Some confront dearly cherished beliefs about what works; a few even seem to attack the values or principles of sustainable development itself.

However, these principles are a first step to using sophisticated behaviour change modelling and comprehensive evidence from around the world to change attitudes towards climate change.

We need to think radically, and the Rules of the Game are a sign that future campaigns will not be ‘business as usual’. This is a truly exciting moment.

For the full evidence for these rules, and the climate change communications strategy itself, please visit: www.defra.gov.uk

For the new UK sustainable development strategy please visit: www.sustainable-development.gov.uk

Hacked Climate Scientists Emails Reveal Truth (Outside The Beltway)

The University of East Anglia mail server was hacked earlier in the week and a string of private correspondences between esteemed climate scientists were published.

In addition to some juicy internecine gossip becoming embarrassingly public, a few of the messages seem to reveal doubts about the evidence for global warming and at least one refers to a statistical “trick” being used to hide lower-than-predicted surface temperatures in recent years.

James Delingpole dubs this “Climategate” and pronounces it “the final nail in the coffin of ‘Anthropogenic Global Warming.’” Andrew Bolt calls it evidence of a scandal involving most of the most prominent scientists pushing the man-made warming theory – a scandal that is one of the greatest in modern science. Michelle Malkin terms it “The global warming scandal of the century.”

Andrew Revkin of the NYT — himself a subject of some of the emails in question — summarizes the controversy:

The e-mail messages, attributed to prominent American and British climate researchers, include discussions of scientific data and whether it should be released, exchanges about how best to combat the arguments of skeptics, and casual comments — in some cases derisive — about specific people known for their skeptical views.

Drafts of scientific papers and a photo collage that portrays climate skeptics on an ice floe were also among the hacked data, some of which dates back 13 years.

In one e-mail exchange, a scientist writes of using a statistical “trick” in a chart illustrating a recent sharp warming trend. In another, a scientist refers to climate skeptics as “idiots.”

Some skeptics asserted Friday that the correspondence revealed an effort to withhold scientific information. “This is not a smoking gun; this is a mushroom cloud,”(continued)

With all due respect Mr Blogmaster, may I inquire just how much longer you intend to allow this troll to slander, insult and generally sabotage your blog completely unchecked?

If you have not noticed, simply threatening to publish this troll's IP address when your readers become completely fed up is not cutting it. The threat is met with a sensation of attacks for a day or two and then it is right back to business as usual.

Allowing this completely obsessed individual a platform is serving you no purpose and illustrating nothing beyond the possibility that you intend to allow a pseudo-anonymous character assassin to attack your readers and your blog without recourse.

If you are unable or unwilling to block a range of IP addresses, then please consider that the only thing that will curb his abuse is to identify him by ISP, name, and/or employer.
