Dwane Powell's sad exit

Yesterday I mentioned that Dwane Powell, the N&O's long-time cartoonist, is retiring this week. I was reminded about an Internet encounter I had with Dwane Powell, an encounter that was shocking and eye-opening to me.

Most of the incident played out publicly on this blog. Here is what happened.

A few weeks back I criticized a Powell cartoon that mocked James O'Keefe and Hannah Giles, the young duo who exposed corruption at several ACORN offices. Powell responded to the criticism by posting this comment on my blog.

You folks enjoy your little echo chamber, y' heah. For the record, McClatchy watch, the fake pimp and hooker aren't whistle blowers...that would mean they actually were working for Acorn. That is my cartoon you posted, btw. You Neocons get all giggly over a few sad nuts at Acorn but don't seem to give a s### about illegal torture techniques, troops being fried in showers in Iraq because of greedy, corrupt contractors or the actions of so many perverts in what's left of the republican party.

You aren't conservatives, for Christ sake...you are D###Heads who could care less for your fellow human beings.

I think Powell was saying people should ignore corruption at ACORN and focus on illegal torture and corrupt contractors in Iraq and "perverts" in the GOP.

If that is his opinion, fine. But seriously -- what is the explanation for the vulgar language? Calling Republicans "D###Heads" is beneath his position.

Thinking Powell might have posted his crude comment in a moment of anger, I emailed him the next day to ask if he regretted his choice of words.

His response: "Not really." He did mention something about the stress of being an editorial cartoonist and having to deal with critics, but didn't regret the "D###Head" comment. Seems like a sad, no-class way to wind up his career at the N&O. Hopefully the Star's next cartoonist -- if there is one -- won't hold Republicans in utter contempt.

Good riddins to another McClatchy Marxist and "I.P. Stone award winner" or is that I.P. Freely?

You mean the same utter contempt in which you hold McClatchy and supporters of Obama. How about getting down from your lofty perch and join the REAL world.

I'll give you another reading, a sad person exits a sad newspaper, and a person this sadly biased should not be working, even in the sadly corrupted print media at any sad level remaining in the saddest of sad professions.

Wow! Another great deep thinker retires. When you are criticized, you make attributions that are unsubstantiated. In fact, Powell engages in defamation. He has no defense! Even as a public figure, McClatchy Watch could demonstrated malice. Powell can't use opinion as a defense, since he expresses things as fact.

Powell wouldn't know a neocon if he were at a Tea Party. He is correct about one thing, O'Keefe and Giles aren't whistleblowers - they are journalists who did the work that McClatchy folks are unwilling to do.

Dickheads seems accurate.

A good first step in taking out the trash at McClatchy. There's a lot more garbage in McClatchy op/ed departments that needs to go before some sort of fairness can bloom. Radical lunatics run these departments.

Melanie Sill must be thrilled that her fellow Marxists traveler kept his phony Marxist veneer under wraps until it was time to bail.

Sac Bee's news boss Melanie Sill admits blatant bias in editorial today:

"There's no dispute that The Bee has a liberal editorial page on most issues, though not all matters, and has mostly endorsed Democrats.

We won't change our editorial philosophy to placate critics."

Want to bet about 80 percent of McClatchy editors and reporters have the same "neoCon" attitude toward conservatives? If truth be known, the vast majority of these phonies are to the left of Barney Frank. They shouldn't even have responsible media jobs in this country. It's a complete joke and why the country now calls it the "state-run media."

Perhaps...

However, when I hold McClatchy and Obama supporters in contempt...I'm NOT doing so while pretending to be an "unbiased journalist"...I'm NOT alienating 50% of my customer base...and I'm NOT accelerating the rate at which my company goes out of business.

Other than that, you're right. LOLOL

Like most in his line of work, Powell had a profession and an agenda. Through the years, the profession and its standards and limits shrunk until all there was left was agenda and anger in the hole where profession used to be.
How sad to end your career with such angry malice.

Editorial cartoonists are a dying breed newspapers can no longer afford. Maybe cartoonists feel they're no longer relevant so there's no longer any reason to keep up the deception of being a fair journalist. The big majority have always been far left nutjobs.

Hope he wasn't depending on McClatchy stock to finance his retirement years.

I hope he was!

he's not suggesting you ignore the problems at acorn. what he's saying is that while you freak out about it, you're ignoring much more serious issues. wh? because to focus on those things would upset your ideological stasis. you arent any more open to new information and changing your mind than those fixed to their positions on the left. its time you admitted that to yourself and everyone else.

powell didnt work for "the star" btw, he worked at the n&o - the news & observer.
