What's with the Kansas City Star and all the party pics??

Ancillary Adams thinks the KC Star web site has become more of a social media platform than a news site.

Newspapers really are in trouble. What other conclusions can you draw when the Star now has what appears to be a permanent place at the center of the homepage reserved for party pics?

If the only reason someone is going to read you is that you might include a picture of someone they know, you should probably be an alumni magazine... not the newspaper of record for a top 50 media market.

Publisher Mark Zieman used to refer to the Star as "the area's pre-eminent source for news." Time for him to drop the pretense and call it "the area's pre-eminent source for party pics"?

It's true. The Star Web site really is behind the times. It's hardly changed since I started reading it online in 1999 when I went to college. It's short on news and big on fluff.

The Star-Telegram does the same thing. The more cleavage, the better.

On a related note, the Charlotte Observer is losing their "Paid to Party" columnist, Sarah Aarthun, to CNN in Atlanta. It's not yet known who will be replacing her, if anyone.

Actually, it's giving most people what they want. Perty pictures. Weird news.
