Other corporate suits got nifty presents, too.
Update: a reader points out there is something shameless about Pruitt's gift:
"Not only incompetent, he's a shameless liar. Restoring the 401(k) match in 2010? Lifting the pay freeze by giving "raises" in 2010 that are less than the amount that was cut from paychecks in 2009. Great "work," Pru.".

In what universe has this management team done a good job? Giving them stock now lets the leadership off the hook for the disaster they led the company into.
Employees, readers and shareholders should revolt!
No big deal here. The don't get any of it until 2012. Will they get it? If they company is indeed still around in 2012, they should get it. If it's not, moot.
Personally, I think the company will still be around and they'll get it.
Time for a Pruitt tune to McClatchy employees.

Give Pruitt a fruitcake and call it good.
A fruitcake for Gary is even more than his employees will get. Any type of perk for the disaster he and his corporate staff have created, is a crime against humanity.
I would bet Melanie Sill still praised Pru. They are birds of a feather; too bad the birds are looking more like dead ducks.
Why is this a surprise to anyone? The rich have been screwing the poor since the Romans...
Why should Pruitt get money based on the current devalued condition of McClatchy? Should his stock not be valued as of the date he took over the company and if he creates value for the shareholders he can participate it in.
Or is this another "retention" bonus. We should call these people perps...not management.
Sounds like 11:46 hates Melanie as much as I do. You must work for her too.
Congratulations Gary,
You lead us into a tailspin by believing your own press clippings and buying KR to satisfy your percieved greatness. In turn you destroyed my career after luring me out west to The Bee. I would still have a job and career if I stayed where I was. They didn't have the ego you have and haven't made foolish purchases. Hence, no newsroom layoffs. Yeah, not everyone has tossed good people overboard. But as long as you get a bonus. Good for you. Maybe every Bee employee you helped destroy should stand outside of your house this week to remind you of the human toll your ego has cost. For the record, nobody ever thought the Stones were cool. You looked like a fucking idiot in that picture standing behind them. Every time we were forced to watch your idiocy on video chat with us we cringed. Ohh! I wonder what song Gary picked out for us this time?
Symphony for the Devil, dedicated to himself as a bonus
1250AM - Hindsight is always 20/20. No one "lured" you anywhere. You thought you'd make more money and advance your career by taking a job with the Bee.
Things didn't turn out like you planned so now it's time to play victim and blame anyone but yourself for a bad decision.
Sad.
You gambled. You lost. Move on.
