Kansas City Star removes Rhonda Lokeman from columnist page

The KC Star finally removed Rhonda "Three Tire Lokeman" from the featured columnists page on its web site. But Lewis Diuguid has apparently been added back in. Diuguid said last December he would no longer be writing a regular column for the KC Star.

The great KC icon of Rude & Crude has left the building. Not driving herself I surmise. The three tire thingy didn’t work out well for her.

There is a good KC Scar discussion at:
Will Not Be Televised discusses The Motley Fool article ‘fools and their money’

“Permanent capital loss” - Newspaper obsolescence, and a proposals for the KC Star.

McClatchy Watch mentioned in the ‘Will Not Be Televised’ article.

“Only after, however, McClatchy Watch or Bottom Line has forced their hand”

Anybody hearing the same rumors I am that the KC Star is going to be sold?

Anonymous said...

Who would buy it with the debt load from the press pavillion?

The KC Star is the only real circulation numbers El Loco Driver had, now what’s next for the classically trained writer.

The KC Star is making money.

Apparently not enough for shareholders who are accustomed to a 8 percent ROI.

I heard that it is going to be sold.

Wonder who the buyer would be considering what's happening to all the media companies right now.

Without the debt of McClatchy they will make money.

To the buyer: Good luck with that.

The KC Star is making money.

Right. And Al Gore invented the Internet.

without the debt the boy blunder put us in we would all be making money. albeit it might not be a lot but we wouldn't be going down like the titanic. and a question, earlier last week on the blog someone said the myrtle beach paper was "closing it's doors" and shutting down, is that true?

11:38 You don't know what the balance sheet for the Star is. They are making money.

Hope it works out for ya ... looks like you're pretty upbeat about the Star. Glad someone is happy with it.

No son the KC Star is not making money. On it's own accord it could not service it's own debt. Just because they can juggle the books with a little creative accounting to show that they are bringing in more that their material expenses does not make you a profitable company.
As far as anyone buying it, there is only one company in this country that even has a use for it with the glass albatross hanging over it's head. Even they would not be interested in paying 270 million for a 15 million dollar company to get the printing facility.
You're living in la la land my friend. Take the blinders off and do the math.

Yes, the KC Star could make as much as 3 million per year without the McClatchy debt. Now, you find someone in McClatchy that would separate the company and absorb the debt. You're talking foolishness to even think it.

The only way the Star will be separated from McClatchy debt is if it is in liquidation. Otherwise, forget it. No one in their right mind is going to pay 270 million for a 3 million per year return.

Nobody said they were going to pay 270 million. Does anybody remember the Minneapolis deal? They need cash.

Maybe you just don't comprehend the numbers. Our brains are not configured to register the difference between billions and millions. They're just words until you do the math.

The cost of the printing plant is pure debt which came in at 289 million dollars despite the number shuffle they did later. The KC Star carries a value of between 15 and 20 million dollars at most. The Star-Tribune carried a price tag in excess of one billion and was sold for 500 million, a figure that would effect their debt. The KC Star sold at this time could bring no where near enough money to enhance the cash position in any meaningful way.

The Star has become a joke. How do they undo that reputation?

How do they undo that reputation?

Easy. Liquidation and new ownership with a dedication to the principals the company was founded on. They are as follows:

William Rockhill Nelson's business strategy called for cheap advance subscriptions and an intention to be “absolutely independent in politics, aiming to deal by all men and all parties with impartiality and fearlessness.

A very simple strategy but effective for 100 years and can be again if the current staff and ownership are eliminated.

..This just in " The K.C.Scar has been purchased for an undisclosed amount of change by Fred Sanford and Son. Fred says he used stimulas money he got from a friend in the big house on Pennsylvania avenue. "

...There's your happy ending. It was sold for scrap.

1:06 That's CA. talk. You people ought to know. Your papers can't even sell junk.

Sounds great. But they would literally have to start from scratch.

On second though, it's impossible. Commies don't sign loyalty oaths anymore.

Sanford and Son could buy it, and Cousin Vinnie would do editorials.

"Everything that guy said is Bull Sh*t"

I guess when ALL the layoffs are done and the numbers come in we'll see which paper is making money.

The KC Red Star said Rhonda was 'retired.' Does that mean she has four tires again?

Who cares.

No. She is affectionately known as, "Rhonda Three Legs" now. Of course that could have had something to do with her missing a shave before her photo op.
