To all employees of The Modesto Bee,
This morning we are announcing plans for organizational changes in our company that will result in the elimination of 7 full-time positions throughout various departments.
Employees affected were contacted earlier today by members of the Human Resources department and information will be sent to members of the newsroom bargaining unit later today.
Those impacted will be eligible for severance benefits and outplacement services. We will do everything we can to help them through this transition.
While these changes are especially difficult considering the changes we have made in recent months and the impact it has on affected employees, they are necessary based on our prolonged advertising revenue challenges.
We had hoped – especially after respectively positive results were reported for the second quarter – that the overall economic outlook and revenue trend for our area would improve as the year progressed. Unfortunately that hasn’t proven to be the case.
Saying goodbye to longtime friends and colleagues is never easy. Those who are leaving are valued members of our team and we thank them for their years of service and dedication to our company.
Our continued success depends on your focus and professionalism through these difficult times. I appreciate everything you do.

"Our continued success" depends on screwing hardworking employees who get the paper out every night while managers and corporate clowns feather their nests with outrageous pay, bonuses and stock options.
Here's an idea... why don't the yahoos in Corporate (Pruitt, Whittaker, Hendricks, etc.) offer to take $1 or no salary at all so they can pay down their debt? Maybe it will save some employees, or better yet, hire back the GOOD employees who were let go!
We have our quarterly meeting with our publisher on Wednesday. Scared to death of what's going to be said. Even more afraid of what they won't tell us. It's like they're trying to break our spirits ... and it's working.
I understand my personal spending habits will not make a difference in the economy but my fear to spend any money right now is great. Until I change industries or things improve vastly call me Tightwad.
They've changed their MO for this quarter's profit announcement: Lay people off BEFORE the announcement instead of after.
Re trying to break your spirit: Yes they are. The more that quit, the less they have to spend in severance packages.

When you call the EDD and it says "Thank you for calling..." HANG UP AND TRY AGAIN!!!
If it says "Welcome to the EDD..." Then you are in (sort of)...Good luck...ya shoulda took the buyout a year ago!!!
Looks like the dreaded company bad news form letter is making the rounds again. It's only a matter of time before Charlotte, Kansas City, Wichita, Fort Worth and the other properties get the same type of bad news.
