McClatchy investors and executives are breathing a sigh of relief today: October is almost over. This month has been a rotten month for McClatchy.
Let me recount October's developments: One of McClatchy's Baghdad bureau reporters, Bobby Caina Calvan, created an internet firestorm after dissing a US soldier and bragging about it on his blog. The blogosphere wasn't impressed with Calvan, to put it mildly. Michelle Malkin nominated him for Jerk of the Year.
Another McClatchy Baghdad bureau reporter, Jay Price, wrote a memorable article about how the drop in deaths in Iraq has hurt cemetery workers. His aricle: "As deaths in Iraq drop, cemetery workers feel the pinch." The blogosphere had quite a reaction. McClatchy's Baghdad bureau chief, Leila Fadel, gave an embarassing speech to a group of women journalists.
McClatchy's financial situation seems to be getting worse. Also in October, McClatchy released its 3rd quarter earnings report, which showed the company's financial woes are continuing. Today, McClatchy Company shares are hovering just above their 52-week low.
Will November be better for McClatchy?
