President Bush vetoes S-CHIP expansion

On Wednesday President Bush vetoed the S-CHIP legislation, which would have vastly expanded the children's insurance program so that it covers middle class children. The photo above shows President Bush departing for a trip to Pennsylvania, moments after vetoing the bill. Jim McCrery points out the Democrats structured the funding so that the program would run out of funds in 2013, thereby setting up a battle to raise taxes to continue an existing program. (So the Dems would be arguing, "If we don't raise taxes kids will not have health care.") Jacob Sullen likes the veto. Captain Ed thinks the House won't be able to override the veto. The Dems wasted no time trying to make political hay out of the veto. The clumsiest response came from Barak Obama, who said, "Bush's veto hurts Iowa's children." Nothing like losing the moral high ground while trying to seize it.
