As developments in Iraq improve, Harry Reid's defeatist views seem completely absurd. Here is Reid, speaking at a press conference on Monday:
"The surge hasn't accomplished its goals," Reid said. "... We're involved, still, in an intractable civil war."Reid's position might have had some merit a year ago, when sectarian violence was a problem. But today, very few sane people still argue that Iraq is in a civil war. There are still sectarian tensions in Iraq, but the major Sunni and Shia groups are not at war. Recently, the top-ranking Sunni and Shia leaders met in Iraq to discuss maintaining peace and unity. And if the positive developments in Iraq continue, even defeatists like Harry Reid will have to admit it.
