LA Times executive to "resign" then walk away with $40 million in severance

Los Angeles Times reports CEO Dennis J. FitzSimons is expected to announce his resignation as early as Wednesday.

The resignation would be the first departure of a top Tribune executive as the company prepares to go private under the leadership of Chicago businessman Sam Zell. FitzSimons, 57, a 25-year veteran of Tribune, is in line to walk away with as much as $40 million, depending on the date on which he chooses to depart, according to corporate disclosure statements.

Ken Reich at Take Back the Times won't be sad to see FitzSimons leave.

UPDATE 12/19 6:35: Here is Ken Reich: "The FitzSimons severance package proves again the adage that the more unsuccessful the corporate executive, the more he can take away with him when he leaves."
