US commander General David Petraeus (L) talks to concerned local citizens during a visit to the village of Owesat, on the banks of the Euphrates, 25 kms (17 miles) southwest of Baghdad, on January 2. The impending drawdown of some 30,000 US troops from Iraq will not disrupt the "relentless" pursuit of Al-Qaeda as Iraqis are ready to take their place, says Petraeus.
You will not see news like this from McClatchy. Not under the current leadership at McClatchy's Baghdad bureau, anyway. Bureau chief Leila Fadel and her team focus on Iraqi citizens who have been victimized by the Iraq war and by Americans. Previous post on Fadel's focus on victimized Iraqis here. McClatchy's reporters have not informed readers about the accomplishments of the 101st Airborne or the 82nd Airborne. McClatchy's readers do not know which soldiers won the battle of Fallujah or which soldiers are fighting Al Qaeda. Intense fighting is going on this week in the Diyala River Valley region but McClatchy has failed to tell its readers. McClatchy's failure to report on the developments of the Iraq War is inexcusable. Fadel and her team focused obsessively about US "sins" at Abu Greib and Haditha but never got around to covering American achievements, and that failure will not be quickly forgotten.
