McClatchy to regionalize news services in the Carolinas - layoffs to follow?

McClatchy newspapers announced plans to centralize newsroom and editorial functions among the publisher’s seven papers in the Carolinas. There was no word on whether this development would involve layoffs, although the announcement hinted at cost efficiencies. The regionalization will be facilitated by CCI Europe’s NewsGate application. From the announcement:

For The Observer and The Herald, the NewsGate server will allow content sharing while eliminating the need for duplication, according to Rick Thames, editor at The Observer.

When you eliminate the need for duplication, that usually means you are about to eliminate positions. And does anybody think McClatchy will improve coverage by regionalizing it?
