Democratic at-large delegate Sharpe James facing felony criminal charges

Democratic at-large delegate Sharpe James is on trial in Newark, New Jersey relative to felony corruption charges.

Prosecutors allege James, the former mayor of Newark, arranged for the sale of nine city-owned properties at discounted rates to his mistress. His mistress was able to quickly resell the properties at much higher prices. She made a tidy profit off the scheme, even though she lacked real estate, construction and financial experience to rehabilitate them, according to prosecutors.

The prosecution has called 33 witnesses.

James is an at-large delegate to the Democratic party convention.
