At the time this photograph was taken, Obama and Ayers were serving together on the board of the Woods Fund. It was in 2001 when Ayers donated $200 to Obama's State Senate campaign fund.
Obama is on the record questioning the patriotism of people who wear a flag on their lapel. Here's Obama, explaining why he stopped wearing an American flag lapel pin:
You know, the truth is that right after 9/11, I had a (flag) pin. Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we’re talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for, I think, true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security, I decided I won’t wear that pin on my chest.
Look at the last sentence. Obama defines "true patriotism" as speaking out on issues that are important to national security. Presumably Ayers is speaking out on issues he thinks are important to America. Will Obama question the patriotism of people who stomp on the American flag?
