The Fort Worth Star Telegram sent a letter to employees Wednesday offering voluntary separation packages. It's the latest cost-cutting strategy for the newspaper, all aimed at streamlining expenses during a difficult economy.
Owned by Sacramento, Calif.-based The McClatchy Co., the Star-Telegram did not specify how many positions will be impacted, but did say involuntary layoffs could come if the voluntary furloughs fail to accomplish the company’s restructuring goals.
The newspaper said most full-time staffers would be eligible for the program, but positions deemed as essential for operations will not be included in the offer.
Eligible employees will have until Sept. 4 to apply for the voluntary separation program.
The initiative follows a series of other cost-cutting measures at the Star Telegram. The paper previously implemented a one-year wage freeze and made workforce reductions.
This is the 3rd round of job cuts at the Star-Telegram this year. In April, the Star-Telegram cut 15 positions. On Bloody Monday, the newspaper announced it was eliminating 130 positions.

How about keeping the headliner of the buyouts/layoffs that has or is going on in August & September. When are some of the papers going to tell Gary enough is enough.
Star-Telegram management is surprised by the number of people who took the buyouts and it wasn't just the older workers. Biggest bailouts in Photo and Features. Big first: Publisher Gary Wortel send the first email using his name; previous missive have been sent by his secretary.
The numbers at the KC Star that toook the buyout looks big many in the newsroom.

Now after the buyout at the KC Star rumor is that's not enough and a layoff is coming. They won't be happy until everyone makes 8 or 9 bucks an hour.
Rumor was right, not enough. Question, What is enough??? They have a plan for cuts each month. It's all ready planned. For anybody to believe the CRAP that "they don't have a exact number" they want is a lie. Maybe The Freedom of Information might show a complete story and ending. It's a drip, drip, drip that way they take care of the legal stuff.
