Where will the next McClatchy layoffs come from? (bumped)

So far this month buyouts have been offered at 3 McClatchy newspapers.

On August 11, the Lexington Herald-Leader offered buyouts to permanent empoyees -- the 3rd round of job cuts in 2008 at that paper. All full-time employees were offered buyouts at the Modesto Bee on August 18 -- the 4th round of cuts this year. Two days later, buyouts were offered at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram -- the 3rd round of cuts.

So who's next?

One candidate is the News & Observer. G. D. Gearino has been hearing Raleigh's News & Observer will announce another round of layoffs in September. If that happens, expect cuts at the N&O's sister paper in Charlotte, too. I don't have information on any other moves. But given the bleak prognosis an analyst gave McClatchy last week (the analyst said she sees "no signs yet of a bottom" for McClatchy), look for more reductions.

As always, I'll keep you posted on developments.

UPDATED: A commenter predicts another round of cuts at the Modesto Bee:

Round 4 for The Modesto Bee it's not over yet. This is a voluntary buyout the last day being September 5th. The Modesto Bee will definitely see a round 5, Involuntary layoffs. Look for it to happen after September 28th when the Newspaper start's printing in Sacramento. If it happens sooner it wont be no surprise.

UPDATED 8/25/08: Well that didn't take long!

Where will they cut next? If you belong to a union watch out! The Idaho paper and the Modesto Bee press rooms were the last press rooms to be union and they have "legally" busted us! GCIU? Teamsters? Guild? CWA? I think you know.
