KC Star rumored to lose 17

you can add McClatchy Interactive to this list. Not sure how many cuts, but a few got the ax today.
MI to cut 16 in the newsroom, development, marketing and business development departments
Anchorage Daily News cuts 25 jobs throught out the building.
The do-nothing, no-impact, lavishly-paid Washington bureau is exempted once again. San Diego just announced they are shuttering their Washington bureau because of the "economic realities." Those realities seem different for MNI, with its stable of $600,000 vice presidents, and Washington reporters who work for no paper.
I said below, but The State to lose 8 in advertising, circulation and production.
Circling the drain...
KC Star cut 30 today....confirmed ...won't say what departments.
Knight-Ridder and their "great ideas and ways to save" are now sinking McClatchy's ship. I know crap runs down hill but this is a shame. The "powers at be" should be accountable for their bad decisions and should be losing their jobs. The Modesto Bee has been in the black and a money maker for years and seems to be the worst hit. McClatchy should be getting rid of(selling) the K-R shops and keeping the ones they have kept McClatchy afloat all these years. K-R is the cancer that has killed McClatchy and the values it held within the communities.
You forgot the Charlotte Observer. Including the 75 that will lose their jobs in the next couple of weeks, I believe the grand total is close to 300.
Anon 1:35 You need to look at the figures again....it's the California papers and Florida that ruined it for the rest of us. Year to Date August figures prove it.
Again....Before Knight-Ridder, the people and the debt that came with it, I think McClatchy would be holding its on. The majority of the newspapers are making a profit, just not up to the budget goals set and definitely not enough to make up for the Knight-Ridder debt they was incurred.
Your right about the debt to buy KRI but who did it? McClatchy. We all lost and the last thing we need to do is fight between ourselves. Our focus should be toward Gary and the bandits and the decision they made not ourselves we did our jobs and quite well.
Speaking of cancer because of KRO I might remind you that Gary came from McClatchy not KRI. Take August year to date figures and you'll find out who is making the money also the job cuts today. KC Star only 30.
Confirmed ... Bradenton Herald is buying out/laying off 44 people total. At least five in newsroom ... three reporters, one metro editor and one desker.
ANOTHER SHOE DROPS!!! 12 MORE at Modesto Bee...Sept. 27 last day of printing at Mo.Bee. 33 full time 127 Part time jobs gone, we knew about this a while back, but came in today and found out 12 let go yesterday...can you say hand basket boys and girls? I thought they cut as much as possible, then told The Modesto Bee HR Dept will take over the duties of the Merced Sun Star HR. One guy saw an ad for some benefit event and it was sponsored by... The Sacramento-Modesto Bee...the merger of two to one is happening little by little...Also heard rumor that as soon as they find a buyer for the Modesto press the building will go on the market...too bad the 3 bidders they had ALL backed out of the deal. With all the shoes dropping I think I'll buy stock in Nike and Gucci. Hey Gary...Here's your sign (Bill Engvall)!!!
mcclatchy to $1.00 on nyse
McClatchy should be getting rid of(selling) the K-R shops and keeping the ones they have kept McClatchy afloat all these years. . . . we who work at the Star-Telegram would absolutely love it if McClatchy sold the paper immediately. But that won't happen, because the S-T is the most profitable newspaper in the chain right now.
The Columbus Ledger needs serious cuts. One CEO said, "if they fire that unethical religion editor, I'll buy a daily subscription for all 3,000 employees the next day". That's the feeling of this community, but McClatchy is so far removed from the atmosphere, they haven't seen the problem here yet.
