Watch out, Idaho

McClatchy offered buyouts at 3 of its newspapers in the Pacific Northwest yesterday. If the company is operating on a geographical basis, the Bellingham Herald and the Idaho Statesman may be next in line. After that, I'd expect Anchorage Daily News would be the next.

But McClatchy seems vested in digging up more dirt on Sarah Palin in Alaska. Will they follow the bean counters and offer buyouts at the Anchorage Daily News? Or, will they follow their hearts and keep reporters looking for scandal on Sarah Palin.

If I know McClatchy, they're desperate for dirt on Palin, so look for them to minimize any layoffs in Anchorage.

McClatchy is first and foremost a business, poorly managed to be sure, but still money comes first.

ADN will get it’s turn in the staff reductions. There’s not been a single executive editor that didn’t make a strong case for retaining newsroom staff, and still not feel the ax.

Liberals they may be, but money comes first. The Sacramento Bee may be pro labor union in it’s content, but that doesn’t translate to how McClatchy treats it’s own unionized depts. The Star Trib union busting debacle is another case in point.

So far, McClatchy has spared the DC bureau and most foreign bureaus, out of concern for journalistic viability.

I bet ADN's web stats are sky high.

We'll see.
