Signs of life at The News Tribune and The Olympian? Holiday sweepstakes off to a good start

Two of McClatchy's newspapers in Washington are showing signs of life due to a successful sweepstake's promotion.

The News Tribune and The Olympian are both running the "Ms. L Toe" sweepstakes/promotion, which is off to a successful start, a source tells me. "Ms. L. Toe" is a contest plus a virtual holiday mall for online shopping -- home furnishings, sporting good, books, gift cards, etc. There is a weekly drawing and the winner gets a gift certificate worth $100.
.
(Is the economy so bad in Washington that people respond to a contest where they might win $100?)
.
Rules of the Ms. L. Toe sweepstakes are here.
.
Newspapers have to turn to promotions like this to compete for eyeballs. We'll see how this affects circulation, readership, and the paper's reputation as a source for news. What do you think?

More of this should be taking place in our industry. More thinking outside the box.

Regardless of how this turns out i am happy to see folks doing something to address our problems outside of boardroom discussion.

Maybe producing a GOOD paper would do the trick!
