Brilliant!... N&O publishes online story on dramatic video from US Airways flight 1549 -- but doesn't link to the video

John in Carolina brings word on the latest evidence the News & Observer has no idea how to produce online news -- on Friday the N&O published a story on their web site on a new, dramatic video on US Airways flight 1549 -- but didn't embed the video or link to it.

The dramatic video was the main point of the story, evidenced by the title: "Tape shows NC-bound plane's Hudson River landing"

Why do a story on "dramatic video" and not embed the video or even link to it?!

Apparently the N&O story is about this recently-released video:

There's alot of that going around at the News & Observer -- in a glowing 2008 column about the importance of the online product and Internet readership trends, N&O executive editor John Drescher cited several online sources, but didn’t link to any of them.

Note: The N&O article has apparently been 404'd. (?)

UPDATE: From comments, the online talent was fired (?)

UPDATE #2: also from comments, these employees weren't fired, they left on good terms.

Don, you have no idea.

The kicker is to have a howard-weaver-type claim "no blinder" status.

Your completely missing the point. (sarc)

But they are experts at sifting through Sarah Palin's garbage.

Howard Weaver spent more time combing his hair than taking care of business. Flying first class, staying in a deluxe hotel, getting a huge expense account. All these perks to go tell regular working stiffs to start looking for new jobs. Then he tells anyone that DARES to question him, to F**k off, and go burn a bridge or something. Howard is just a typical McClatchy honcho. Draining the MNI swamp could only be a good move.

The N & O is so biased it stinks. I would not believe one word in any section of the N&O paper. It seemed to me even a travel article was laced with one of their leftist agendas. My trash can is too good for their fishwrap waste of trees.

Neither of those people were fired. They took jobs elsewhere, at a local television station and at USA Today respectively.

Congratulations on your blithe slandering of two good newspeople.

Generally, in the old-fashioned world of newspapering, one calls to verify negative information before publishing it. Only lazy hacks don't bother.

Are you referring to the lazy hack at the ADN, or McClatchy hacks in general?

The worst part of the N&O is their dishonesty. Their character assassinations of anyone except democrats during elections is unbelievable. They have been doing it for years. They have a couple of the most race baiting non-journalists in the country. These malcontents stay as good journalists bite the dust.

Are you sure they weren’t forced to take a buyout?

Anonymous said...

Neither took the buyout. They were excellent employees and would never have been fired.

This sort of lazy calumny is a demonstration of why the internet and its ranks of so-called citizen journalists cannot and will not supplant professional newsgathering.

Unless you are one of these people, yours is just secondhand information as well. Put your name on your post, and why we should believe you? Maybe you have an ax to grind? Give us a link to the correct information. That is the new media. Get with it, or get out of the way.

Just in case you haven't notice this blog is only for McClatchy bashing.

Well, if the new media consists of anonymous slander, lazy reporting and truculence -- not to mention leaden prose, terrible grammar and illiterate spelling -- you are welcome to it.

(Are you lumping what the blog owner says with the comments section? Everyone knows that is two different things. Make that sane internet people know that. It is called freedom of speech, and being entitled to your own opinion.)
