"We are all likely to see and hear more rumors, misinformation, misstatements, etc. about McClatchy. We will do our best to correct what we can. We would also like to ask your help in checking with us when these situations arise before becoming concerned or assuming this kind of information is accurate."This incident beautifully illustrates why print media is dying -- the knuckleheads in charge of print media do not understand the value of Internet. Why didn't Pruitt use the Internet to correct the misinformation, instead of firing off an angry memo -- days after the fact -- and making employees feel they did something wrong?
Gary, you have it backwards -- the employees haven't done anything wrong, it's you and your corporate team that have failed the employees.
Gary Pruitt should have his own blog, where he could provide real-time information about the company. It's much better to get the info out immediately rather than react to rumors by sending out angry memos days after the fact.
Of course, he could have suggested McClatchy employees read this blog for the info -- I posted my story on Sunday (Rumors of the closure of McClatchy's DC bureau are exaggerated) after a reader tipped me off Saturday -- almost immediately after the incident. (AP photo/H.W. Chiu)

Now we have it: A reasonable explanation of McClatchy’s method of self destruction.
“Pruitt's management style : Hire solid, skilled people — and give them a lot of rope.”

Archer05 -- seems like the board of directors has given Gary Pruitt alot of rope...
The Board of Directors are scared and gutless. Period.
The board of directors should consider outsourcing themselves to India or The Philippines.
Is it just me or does that dude mug shot strongly resemble that of the bottom feed grass carp?
That mug definitely resembles a bottom feeder... http://travel.mongabay.com/china/600/china_103-7094.JPG

This is classic McClatchy. They refuse to communicate with their employees, then scold them for wondering WTF's going on and talking among themselves about it. If they'd just make an effort to be more transparent about what's going on, rumors likely wouldn't get far.
Typical McClatchy damage control...When they told one paper's poduction Dept. it would get laid off in a few months, rumors started flying and people from other Depts. were calling and it got real ugly.
BTW what happened to all the rope the board gave Gary...Did he steal it?
Pruitt sold that rope on a short sell.
