This blog is mainly about the spectacular train wreck at The Sacramento Bee and its parent company, the McClatchy Company. But I also post about current events, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, politics, anything else that grabs my attention. Take a look around this blog, hope you enjoy it.

In regard to pending layoffs, does anyone know whether part time workers will be considered first (ahead of full timers)?
Are you kidding? Part timers are safer than anyone. Well...except for those who's shit comes out in little plastic bags with pink ribbons tied around them.
No special treatment for part-timers...I was a part-timer whose job was eliminated right along with the full-timers in June. A true honor to be treated just like the big girls!
What would be the sense in laying off part-timers first? ---- Absolutely none. Part timers fill their most important production positions, (feeding insert machines) they don't pay them squat and no benefits to boot. They fill the Illegal Invasion Assistance Quota, and relieve prison crowding.
The part timers that are expendable are the ones from outside agencies that they end up paying full time wages for, 50% for the worker and 50% for the agency. Pedro Lopez Gonzales-Morales of Mehico uses a Coyote and Gavin Newsome, so he is exempt as long as he files two lawsuits and has at least 3 anchor babies.
It doesn't have crap to do with race or logic. If the execs were utilizing logic, it would be the captain of this sinking ship that was let go first. $4.6 million in salary would protect a hell of lot more jobs belonging to the rank and file than axing those of us at the bottom raking in the whopping $28K a year.
It doesn't make sense to get rid of part timers who don't get paid benefits. It doesn't make sense to get rid of any of the working class. The only way to preserve company bottom line, is to axe the top first. However, if you've ever studied sociology, that won't happen because the higher social classes ALWAYS protect themselves.
The lower social classes are too dependent upon their tiny paychecks to mount an uprising. A week without work means no food on the table. It's a gamble NONE are willing to take.
We can't change anything because we refuse to stand up for ourselves. So expose your neck and don't squirm when the axe starts swinging. Stop the in-fighting. Those of us at the bottom didn't create the problem. We didn't steer the ship into the ice berg. Were merely the steerage that will continue to be sacrificed in order to protect Gary's golden parachute.
This is the Huffington Post the liberals tout as the new media? It is just a whackjob hangout in my opinion. They just got caught, the whole blog should be a corrected. *** Friday, February 20, 2009

Friday, February 20, 2009 Tucson Citizen Likely to Close on March 21 The Tucson Citizen is reporting that its own demise is most likely on March 21:
The deadline for bids on the Tucson Citizen has passed - apparently with no offers - which means the paper likely will cease publication March 21 after 138 years in business.
Huffington Post is a cash cow lefty site that will publish just about any hack who thinks they can report. No crediblity and unfortunately that's the type of "journalism" we're facing in our future.
The new 'writing heads' are pointing to the Huffington Post as the new media model. The 'Muttering' chorus plants the seed nearly every day. Don't buy that shit, or nothing will be gained in this media revolution.
Sac Bee is offering some buyouts to those who "sign up early." The guild submitted a list of names today and can add more names should anybody else seek a "voluntary layoff." Looks like there aren't enough so the company likely will have to layoff more. The guild rep says things will happen fast next week.
No mention in Lexington of voluntary buyouts being offered. If they do offer them it will drag out this entire process though b/c if they announce that as an option next week then they will have to give people like a week to sign up and then it seems to take another week to announce who was accepted. I hate to drag out this agony but it would be nice to know that at least those people left voluntarily and weren't just forced out. I think that if it was an option it would have been announced by now. Everyone is expecting another "Bloody Monday" next week. Who knows though. Maybe they'll surprise us and do it on a Thursday again....nothing like mixing things up!
Has any paper other than the Sac Bee put voluntary buyouts on the table this month?
About laying off FT vs. part time workers - in the last round of layoffs they got a LOT of PT people - which doesn't make a lot of sense to me since they get reduced benefits at my paper.
They have to chop the heads off of current PT staff first, for fear that full time staff will react with a wild cat strike and shut them down. (That really is what they teach them)
After your full time drags on profit (their way of thinking) are removed, it is a simple matter of rehiring part timers.
More importantly .46 all time low. Did anyone notice the short sellers covering each time the price dipped below the .50 level? Three times, just like clock work.

Holy Frijoles! Making rash judgments about others, is that a liberal trait?
