This blog is mainly about the spectacular train wreck at The Sacramento Bee and its parent company, the McClatchy Company. But I also post about current events, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, politics, anything else that grabs my attention. Take a look around this blog, hope you enjoy it.

Job cut news and noted statements, “..all of these changes will happen on "steroids," meaning very quickly.” “The paper product will be an afterthought.” ---------- 1/31/09 Orlando Sentinel Job Cuts Likely Based on an Orlando Sentinel staff meeting held Friday, it looks like:
Jobs will be cut in stages. How many people will be affected is unclear. Bankruptcy court will have to weigh in on whether next set of ex-staffers get severance payments, as others have. Earlier deadlines will be established for Sunday paper so it can be printed in two press runs, instead of three. No more movie listings in the tv guide. Lots more content sharing to take place with other Tribune papers. Lots more templating of pages and ads. News will be written and assembled for the Web and then plopped into the next day's paper. Redesign of the Web site may be in the works; professional design team may be involved. According to Editor Charlotte Hall, all of these changes will happen on "steroids," meaning very quickly.
Sounds like the digital newsroom will arrive sooner rather than later. The paper product will be an afterthought.

Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Barack Obama’s popularity makes him a marketer’s dream. Now, the honeymoon may be over for those trying to profit from his appeal.
Anonymous 8:13 -- McClatchy stock is up 13 percent as of 11:25 EST. Not that that tidbit of information means a whole lot. But, the DOW is down slightly.
9:14... we would care if real journalists were going to be hitting the bricks, but we don't really care if a bunch of left wing propagandists end up pushing a shopping cart while wearing those cute little gloves with no fingers.
9:34 You probably were part of the DEAD WOOD they got rid of before. No wonder! What an idiot. 9:41 Why are you tracking McClatchy? Must be on unemployment and can't get a job at Walmart.
Re: These guys seem to thrive & root for bad news at McClatchy. Quess they don't care if people lose their jobs. *** Are you serious? Like not talking about this sad situation will make it go away? Dude, McClatchy is looking after you, don’t worry, be happy.
These guys seem to thrive & root for bad news at McClatchy. Quess they don't care if people lose their jobs. ------- I am afraid that you are going to have to find a new sympathy play because you are largely correct. The remaining people at MNI garner little to no sympathy for a number of reasons, not the least of which are sanctimonious, snarky little ploys such as yours.
McClatchy and their publications have earned the wrath of many. Their own employees, former employees, customers and advertisers alike. Frankly, and I know it sounds crude, but if they closed their doors today, I for one would give the departing rabble bad directions to the unemployment office.
Good article about media these days: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/01/31/sunday/main4766386.shtml
About the previous posts here - why on earth are people reading this blog if they hate McClatchy people so much? (The co. is one thing - but the innocent employees too?) To me this is a place to get good info/rumors about what's coming down the line since I do work at a MNI paper. I can't b/v people hate the world so much that they'd wish joblessness on ANYONE.
And may I remind you - not everyone that works at a newspaper is a journalist so don't lump us all together. Not that it excuses the hatefulness.
9:48 thanks for letting us all know your a piece of sh!t.
most of the comments on this blog are full of this crap.
just look at 9:34 comment
what was a mcclatchy blog is now something else. they should change the name of the bog.
some of these people ar bitter about the right wing/left wing media and dont care about mcclatchy even though this is a mcclatchy blog lol. whatever wish they post somewhere else so mcclatchy employees could come here still for news.
I'm no fan of MNI management, and god knows I have plenty of info to leak, but damned if I will.
There's no information here that isn't scraped up from actual news providers and more reputable blogs. Except the bile, of course, which is entertaining and worth keeping tabs on.
Gregory either can't or won't make this site into something useful for current and former MNI employees. I think he finds it easier -- and, pathetically, more emotionally gratifying -- to surround himself with a chorus of yes-men.
This site broadcasts opinion, instead of discovering news about the company. Often, any scrap of new information is immediately cheapened by all the heavy breathing conjecture that accompanies it.
Will MNI be de-listed? Will there be more layoffs? Is there a real problem with the KC publisher's actions? You can't tell from here -- no perspective, no actual reporting, no attempt to include opposing views, and hence no credibility.
There are plenty of unflattering stories about MNI to be done, but no one on this site has the chops to do them.
Gathering news is real work. Spouting opinion is easy, and everyone knows it, and values it accordingly.
Dude, I'm not a piece of shit. I quit working for McClatchy and a Hearst paper because I was not a piece of shit.
You sad sacks want people to believe that you are innocent victims of a bad company, yet you chose to stay and work for them. You are a representative of the company and a direct reflection of them. That is the way it is, like it or not. I have no sympathy for you.
This blog has a good mix of news and opinions. If you don’t mind, one of the reasons MNI is crashing is because they became a one note band. Don’t wish that same failure on this blog. There is something for everyone, but no one has the right to demand a single narrow subject, but the blog owner.
I have never read that he wanted McClatchy news only. Besides, what is happening at the other papers is important to everyone. This is an industry wide problem, get that? There is something to learn, but you have to take your blinders off. However, you can keep them on until they come for you.
Wah! I can't keep my job so I will try and turn someone's blog into a reflection of what I dream it should be by insulting and criticizing it. Maybe I can shame him into shaping his blog into a reflection of myself, for I am McClatchy!
10:08 You got that right. They won't let go of the McClatchy name because they NEED it. They use the name so people will come to this blog. Funny, the thing they hate the most they need. McClathcy.
Jobs will be cut in stages. How many people will be affected is unclear. Bankruptcy court will have to weigh in on whether next set of ex-staffers get severance payments, as others have. ----------------- “Jobs will be cut in stages.” Those are worrisome words. That mean no end in sight, right?
A journo friend of mine ask his editor what might be going down, and the editor said, “Look at it this way, if you can, go back and live with your parents the next year or so.”
I’ll tell you what makes me angry. The big bucks pulled down by the MNI brass. I don’t think for one minute they thought about anything but their high lifestyles. Jet planes, five start hotels, on and on. It may sound picky, but how many wasted millions does it take before stockholders have the right to becomes picky? Who are their watchdogs, the BOD? Where were they?
Layoff News: Following the layoff of the Kansas City Star's classical critic earlier, another McClatchy-owned paper, the Miami Herald, has offered classical critic Lawrence Johnson an "involuntary buyout" with eight weeks severance. While Johnson isn't blogging his layoff like his ex-colleague Brayden Simms, he has hit Blogspot to launch his own blog covering the local classical scene. [Musical America via The Music Press Report]
Layoff #2 "..they eliminated the beat they thought they could most easily farm out." I don't like the sound of that. ------------ Newspaper conglomerate McClatchy has laid off Kansas City Star classical critic Paul Horsley as part of its latest round of cost-cutting. "I think it was a very 'corporate' decision... I think they eliminated the beat they thought they could most easily farm out." Well, at least his former bosses aren't making him blog the layoff process like they are with some other people, right? [Musical America via The Music Press Report]
Archer - don't you find that odd? That right before we're predicting mass layoffs will come they layoff a single person? Why not just wait until you let go 50 at a paper - or whatever? Just seemed odd to me.
This stuff is entertaining to read! The best McClatchy journalists already have hit the road through career changes or early retirements. What's left in those newsrooms are no-talent suckups, 20-somethings looking to "change the world" (LOL!) and financially-strapped and trapped vets who need the paycheck.
12:48 This comes from one that is in the unemployment line? I know you'll say no but then, why are you here? Why haven't you moved on with your life? I know your jealous of the ones still getting a paycheck.
Anon:12:24 I just came across the information on a blog I follow because of my personal interests. I saw the MNI layoffs, and added them because of the trend I see in layoffs for special interest writers. I think there are quiet layoffs going on all the time. I know it is a weeding process, but I look at it like this, the people trying to put Humpty Dumpty back together again, are the same ones that cracked the hell out of him in the first place.

Thanks for that Archer. Still no updates from McClatchy papers today? I guess we'll just have to wait on pins and needles a while longer!

Thanks 8:35 I follow the stock market myself. I think you know that I was refering to layoff news but thanks anyway. Don't need it.
Here is a link to a good read about post Watergate journalism. It is in the American Spectator, written by William Murchison.

There's no real McClatchy news on this blog. What idiot would leak anything worthwhile to someone who would gloat at seeing him unemployed?
Check out the Gannett blog for a contrast: a site that actually breaks company news.
This is a just a hangout for cranks.
Just McC. today Huh?

Only problem is, they can't sell any of that either.
What to do?????

McClatchy cares nothing about its employees. Then again, mcClatchy cares nothing about its readers either.
I think it is so hilarious to read comments by bitter employees, writing about perceived bitterness in others.
