Report: Fort Worth Star-Telegram to lay off several dozen employees, possibly up to 100 (bumped)

From comments:
News about the future of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is trickling out of managers' meetings and it isn't pretty. Much is still up in the air, but here are some basics:

The newspaper will be reduced to three sections per day, except Sundays, when it will look as it does now. The section breakdown is National-Foreign and Business, Metro and Features, Sports and Classified. Op-ed will be in the first section, slightly reduced and paired with the weather map. Plans are to go live with this format in early March.

There will be buyouts. There will be layoffs. There is no word on the compensation package or the number of employees to be slashed. One person in the know said several dozen to 100, which is too broad for my taste. Since buyouts are involved, the timetable for layoffs is unknown.

Furloughs and pay cuts are not being considered at this time.

It's just sad. Are there 100 left to lay off?

Anonymous said...

It’s not layoffs and buyouts, its layoffs & severance.

Anonymous said...

There is some discrepancy over whether we are having buyouts (voluntary departure with severance) or not and whether or not there will be pay cuts. Some managers heard one thing in their meetings, others heard the opposite. Also, one thought the layoffs would be announced in two weeks. Unfortunately, we are all working with hearsay because there hasn't been an official announcement.

Why doesn't McClatchy just file for Chapter 11 and get it over with? At least we could have a bankruptcy court trustee calling the shots instead of Boy Blunder Gary Pruitt and S-T publisher Gary "Hatchet Man" Wortel. Wortel has been at the helm for only a year and is about to implement a fourth round of job cuts. And this is at a paper that probably makes the most profit for McClatchy. Corporate mismanagement at its worst: Kill the golden goose and maximize short-term profit in a hopeless attempt to pay off McClatchy's $2 billion in junk bond debt. Heckuva job, Worty.

Anonymous said...

Everyone (at the Star Telegram) knows Wortel was brought in to squeeze the life out of the golden goose. Wes Turner was a good guy. He could never stay and do anything like this at the Star Telegram. Ahh fond memories of that day Scumbag Pruitt came to Fort Worth and gave his chump speech to everyone about how "they liked how we did things down here in Texas" and we'd be left to keep doing those things. Pfft, yeah, right. We all knew that was a load of crap. Then they sent in their grim reaper Darla Ruiz. You walk by that woman in the hall and feel the cold chill of death. I'd put a gun in my mouth before I did the kind of stuff she's doing to us all.

Anonymous said...

Let's not forget her title: That would be the vice president of dehumanizing resources, Darla Ruiz, a so-called native Texan who was imported from California to do Pruitt's dirty work.

Anonymous said...

And someone tell me why I still pay for this rag to be delivered to my house?

Oh - I'm sure they will package the paper in a better way for the readers and to attract advertisers. Or some other bullshit like that. Keep up the good work Jim/Gary. You guys are a great team!

*National-Foreign* That foreign bureau should be cut ASAP. Just try to find out how much is spent for their biased world reporting. Some papers have dropped the bunker boys already, but not MNI. Why has Pru said he is so-called, cutting expenses, but protects this money guzzling bureau? Perhaps someone foreign means more than any USA worker? A bankrupt newspaper trying to shape an anti-USA and anti-Israel world view is pathetic. Like no ones knows how biased they are! Dump them Pru, do the right thing!

As someone who was let go a year ago from the Startlegram, I can safely say from experience that the lucky ones are those who no longer work there. I was fortunate to find a better job in a couple of months. But even so, better to be unemployed than work for such inept and mean-spirited crooks. Jim Witt, do yourself and readers a favor and resign. Your brilliant "redesign" began this paper's downfall.

Anonymous said...

That sounds about par. Morale in the pressroom and packaging sucks. The people in those departments want it over with so they can move on but it seem like McClatchy like to watch the people worry and suffer.

Anonymous said...

And I can name the protected ones at the South Plant. They'll be there to lock the gates if we no longer print the paper. But you can bet your but they'll have a job at McClatchy somewhere in Ft. Worth

They will go private. No Chapter 11 the family would lose too much. Why do think that they are driving the stock price down.

Anonymous said...

That makes alot of sense, but what about the employees?

Anonymous said...

MNI going private does not clear the 2 billion credit card debt. That's the malignant cancer spread from Sacramento that will kill all the newspapers in the chain.

Anonymous said...

8:29 In some ways I think it might be better. There will not be any drum beat of bad news everyday. They can take any dividends they would pay and put it directly to the debt.

Anonymous said...

The word whether means "that or that not." So it is usually redundant to say "whether or not." If you can substitute the word if for whether and not change the meaning of the sentence, you do not need to say "or not."

Where do you propose that they get the money to pay off the debt? That is why they couldn't go private when it was a viable option. Unless they find someone that can finance their 2 billion dollar debt, going private is not an option.

Anonymous said...

To hell with 8:41, let get back to what this blog is about. The serious problem we're faced with

Wow the grim reaper we wanted to warn you from California but we were just so happy to see Darla Ruiz leave. She left her mark in California for sure and now it looks like Texas is feeling the grim reaper. We feel your pain Star- Telegram. God bless you and your family's.

Still you have 30 papers going to the internet down the line. 2B isn't that much. Compared to other industries going down the tube. I don't know that much about it but they do make money, trim the fat which will be hard. But it would work. Most of the papers make money.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone found a good article on what to do for retirement when the matching 401K contribution stops?

--

I don't understand why you folks keep believing that they are making money. They are not making money. They are losing millions every single month. Over half of everything that they bring in goes to paying interest alone. Combine that with monthly declines in revenue of 20%. How long do you think that it will take before that becomes 100% of their gross going to cover the debt?
I understand that individual papers put out to their employees that they are profitable, but it is a lie. As part of a conglomerate they receive favorable cost reductions across the board in everything from newsprint to insurance. As stand alone companies these reductions in operating costs would disappear instantly leaving all but a couple of the tentacles operating at a deficit over night.

Man, I hate McClatchy. I am just telling you the facts as they are. By all rights, all but a couple of the McClatchy papers should have been out of business several years ago, and if the creditors wanted anything to do with it, the entire shooting match should have folded in December of last year.
Don't believe me, that is fine. But just know that I make my living analyzing companies such as this and I am telling you now. There is no way out for McClatchy, and there is no way out for most of their holdings.

I am also a former McClatchy employee. Hearst also. I do owe both a debt of gratitude though. Had it not been for them, I might never have gotten my CFA or learned to profit from a bad company.

Anonymous said...

Boiling in oil offense? Why not just make them sit through the 2 o'clock news meeting?

Anonymous said...

It's funny to sit in on the news meetings here at the Star-Telegram. They take themselves so serious - the thinking is people really read the newspaper and care what story is on a section front. People WAKE UP! Put your energy towards something that counts!

Anonymous said...

"Boiling in oil offense? Why not just make them sit through the 2 o'clock news meeting?"

There is no profit in a news meeting. Boiling in oil would allow them to sell, "McClatchy Piggy Pops" along side their Obama books and "Barry for Pope" buttons.

What we ought to do is collect all of the people on this blog that have any talent and open a newspaper. Pretty soon there ought to be an overwhelming opportunity to have the ONLY paper in many major markets.

Seems anyone with brains is already on this blog. We might as well put it to use!

It makes me sick what's happening there.
I feel scared for my friends that are still there.

I'm thankful that I left when I did. I wish they could've!

The end game is not fun. So much damage done by MNI and the MSM, that can't be reversed.

It's no longer about agenda, (but they still have one), Sadly, it's now like a sick spring-training sporting event.

Simply making it to the next cut is the job. Then the next cut and the next cut. But with no prize at the end.

When MNI goes bust, anyone left who scrapped it out, will be empty and have pangs of guilt that gnaw at their core.

Anonymous said...

Seems like the longer one makes it in this real-life game of "Survivor", the less likely it is to get a decent severance package.

Anonymous said...

Does anybody know what the severance package is? CA was pretty good, max. 40 weeks. Wasn't that in the Guild letter?

Anonymous said...

That is the way it always is. At this point the only thing left are the true believers. Those that never questioned, those that thought of themselves as the inner circle, and those that who refused to see the truth and make other plans.

These are the people easiest to fool, most of which will take the shaft without a whimper. Many of them are the ones that will continue to defend McClatchy even after they are thrown under the bus.

It is sad but face it. People will be willingly lead to their executions without a whimper if they think there is a chance that they will be the last to die.

Anonymous said...

The survivors will really be the victims with wage freezes, only 401K for retirement, longer hours and more work dumped on them with reduced staffing. Once online really kicks in they'll be working midnight to 8 a.m. shifts and lots of weekends. The company holds all the cards, even in union shops these days. Welcome to modern sweat shops.

Anonymous said...

The way the company looks at it, if you held out and didn't take previous buyout packages or leave for another profession, you're a complete idiot and you deserve their longest shaft. The current leftovers are dead meat.

Anonymous said...

2:22 In a way you're right. Most everyone was offered a pretty good buyout. Now they can't complain. They had a chance to move on and quit a crappy company. They must like being treated like shit.

They rolled the dice and lost.

Anonymous said...

The last few postings sound like bitter ex-employees. The real reason most people stay at their crappy jobs is to be able to pay their bills. In the meantime you're still looking for other opportunities. I am sure you wish that all the people you left behind are as miserable as you are but, considering the current job market, the people that stay behind after this next round of layoffs are still the lucky ones.

Anonymous said...

9:37 You make some good points. My question is. Did they show a profit for the last quarter?

Anonymous said...

3:00 Then what are you worried about? Have you not been reading this blog?

Most everyone I know that took a buyout has moved on landed on their feet. Also, very glad to be out of the day to day crap.

I think 2:22 & 2:40 struck a nerve.

Good luck at being "the lucky one".

Anonymous said...

9:37 You make some good points. My question is. Did they show a profit for the last quarter?

--

No they didn't. They lost 21.7 million dollars in what was the quarter that is traditionally their best. (Holiday advertising)

Anonymous said...

3:00 I cannot imagine how you came to that conclusion. Hopeful wishing or just didn't like the message?

I too have seen the people that got out early land on their feet. I don't think the remainder will be so fortunate. The jobs that were open are drying up rapidly. If you got out, you're ahead of the game.

Anonymous said...

3:00pm, well said. Besides the loss of journalism that was once so much fun, which is sad enough, is that these frantic, frightening times have everyone taking shots at each other, which is sometimes comforting and justified, other times just plain unfair. There are people with sick children and spouses, bills to pay, kids in school, and no other jobs to go to. We are all in the same boat, so don't let all of the corporate BS and stupidity divide people who once sat across from each other and laughed and created some fantastic journalism. Let's all wish each other the best, whatever that is, for next week.....

Anonymous said...

3:00 You kinda sound like the bitter one. I don't know if I'd be calling myself "the lucky one" if you make it through this round of layoffs. Dude, you just don't get it. It's just a matter of time until The End.

Anonymous said...

3:00 again.

For all of those that replied to my post and have landed on their feet congratulations! You are too very lucky. But why are you even looking at this blog? At least I have a good excuse.

I totally get that my current job will no exist by the end of the year but I am not going to act like loosing my job is the best thing that could ever happen me. I wasn't offered a buyout (many of us didn't have that option)so I am not in denial. For now I still have a paycheck and, if I am able to keep my job, a few more months to find a better job while still employed. I think this is common sense.

Anonymous said...

I don't know anybody who took a previous buyout who is unhappy or poverty stricken. On the contrary, this is the happiest they've ever been! Getting away from a horrible working environment is like being reborn.

Anonymous said...

3:42 Good for you! Hopefully you're one of them.

Anonymous said...

"But why are you even looking at this blog? At least I have a good excuse."

Oh, I see. Because I got out you think I have no right or reason to be interested in the demise of my former place of business? I have no good reason to be interested in the topic? How strange of you to imply that. Maybe the right wingers have a point or two after all?

Anonymous said...

3:00 We get your situation. Just don't think that everyone who took a buyout is miserable. The truth is that most walk out with many many thousands of dollars and benefits. Most took buyouts 6 months ago or more when the job market was better. Very few would want to be employed at McClatchy now and are very glad they moved on.

Anonymous said...

3:00 I totally get what you're saying, I wasn't eligible for any buyout deal and am happy that I still have a job, even if it's in a dying paper. A lot of people reading this blog are prob not as fortunate. Stay strong!

4:08 I doubt anyone is thinking that the people that were bough out are miserable. If I had been offered that option a year ago I might have taken it. What the current employees need is a bit of sympathy. No one is there b/c they want to but b/c they have to.

Anonymous said...

2:22 - you are right on. Couldn't of said it better.

3:00 - you need to stay off this blog and start looking for a job at monster.com. You are so off base its crazy.

Anonymous said...

I still work at the Star-Telegram and hope I do for a long time. The bitter comments on this blog do not reflect the attitude that I see in the newsroom even now. I believe in the service of providing readers with the news. I hope it finds a way to survive, and I hope I'm a part of the solution. But if I lose my job, I'll move on. That's life.

Well let me tell you something 2:22, I'm still working for McClatchy because I have a family to provide for and they count on me!!!! To bad I can't tell you that in person and then give your little punk ass a slap upside the head! You’re the idiot and I’m sure your shaftless!

Anonymous said...

7:20 Who's the idiot? The one who took all the money and left or the one who will be left with nothing in the end?

Most of us got into journalism because we loved it. I was laid off, and I'm still sad. And I'm sad now for my friends and former co-workers who are still at the Star-Telegram as it declines.

I hope there's a late fourth-quarter touchdown, and someone saves the day. Do I think so? No. But I hope so.

And for those hateful bloggers who are calling the ones there idiots for hanging on, some of us have responsibilities. A paycheck is a paycheck, my friend. I have applied and applied and applied, and it's not easy finding a job. Journalism skills aren't valued today. I say keep depositing the checks in your account as long as they're good.

In hindsight which was responsible? Hanging on and hoping for a Savior (Obama Maybe?)..or preparing for a career change and moving on while opportunities existed?

I don't agree with calling you idiots, but I don't buy into the plea for sympathy either. I especially do not subscribe to your contention that you stayed out of a sense of responsibility as the responsible thing to do was ensure your skills for future adjustments. The writing was on the wall for THREE years at the very least.

Did you think seniority, loyalty or merit was going to save you from a dying industry and bad employer?

Anonymous said...

Did you think seniority, loyalty or merit was going to save you from a dying industry and bad employer?

No, but I think I might help save the industry. At least I hope so. Either way, it's a worthy task. Surely you agree.

Anonymous said...

Of course being happy you have a job anywhere (even at the ST) is the correct thing to do. But if you aren't close to retirement, you are crazy to hang on. The paper has just tanked, the quality of journalism is pathetic and I can't imagine anyone is proud of the crap that is seeping out of there. After all the push to do videos have you SEEN them? Most are just crap. JUST CRAP. I too left the ST, but I have many friends still there and am curious about what is going on. There is nothing wrong with that. I can't believe how lucky I feel to have been laid off. Seriously, I never thought I would say that but my life (and my paycheck) is so much better.

Anonymous said...

I'm not any one of the previous posters on this thread, but I'd like to say that I don't want anyone's sympathy or pity for trying to gut it out. I've stayed because I wanted to be a part of this transformation into something new, something different. I thought McClatchy might be smart enough to evolve into whatever print news media is supposed to become. I guess much like the Auto giants, this industry is full of itself, and is slow to change. They are arrogant, and oblivious to the desires of consumers and changing technology trends around them. They would continue to force feed us the same crap until it causes their own demise. The poor economy has only accelerated the problems, not caused them.

I guess my fault is having the belief this industry can evolve, when in reality, some creatures just go the way of the dodo bird, no matter what you try to do.

Even still, if they intend to cut off their limbs and manage to survive without me, well then, I gave it my best. I wont burn my bridges because it's kind of hard to when the bridge has already fallen into the river. Meanwhile I'll keep on moving forward. Here's hoping everyone can land on their feet and keep moving forward with or without McClatchy.

Anonymous said...

I'm not any one of the previous posters on this thread, but I'd like to say that I don't want anyone's sympathy or pity for trying to gut it out.
--
Now you I have a great deal of empathy for. I didn't realize that there was anyone left in McClatchy even capable of recognizing the reality of their situation and actually admitting a degree of responsibility for their own situation.

Might I suggest changing your career to something in the line of PR work? You could make a killing rehabbing media type reputations.

Anonymous said...

I stayed b/c I need the money and I was never offered a buyout. I didn't want to leave until I found another job opportunity. I don't pat myself on the back for doing that and don't think that the people still at the paper are idiots. The job market is really tough and it took me almost a year to find another job, thankfully I didn't have to stress about my severance running out.
For those of you that survive this cut, keep looking and be thankful you still have a job. For those of you that don't I wish you the best.

Anonymous said...

I don't know where the person saying "most everyone was offered a buyout" got that info. Maybe most everyone in your department at your paper...

You know, this really is sad. Like many, I got into this business because I believed I was doing the greater good and for a while, I'm sure I was. My how times have changed.

The business is changing, if not dying. It's time for those with any sense at all to move along. A new generation will pick up the pieces never knowing what a wonderful career this once was.

I pray every day to be laid off or offered a buyout. I've been seriously exploring a career change since December and am ever so close to inking a deal. In a perfect world I'd walk from the S-T with my severance directly to my new position without missing a beat. At this point it looks like that just may happen but who's to say?

For those who remain, I wish you nothing but the best. However, though you may be loyal I trust you are at the least attentive. The times are changing, the business is dying and there's no glory in riding a horse into the ground. It is a shame that it's come to this but it has, in fact, come to this.

The poor guys in the press room (the few that actually know what they are doing ) can’t meet trucks and be productive because of the yaahoo’s they have running the place … Tommy C. KYLE M.
The truck dept. is being ran by one man but paying three… and no it’s not Kenny or sonny
There’s two expenses they could get rid of right there…

As a former S-T employee, I am shocked that Kyle Moore (sneeze: homo) is stil employed after causing the paper a million dollar plus sexual harrasment lawsuit. People like Tommy Carr will continue to have a job there so long as they pull their race card and continue to be "yes" men. I wish nothing but the best to those who are still hanging on and truly deserve to be employed there.

I don't think we should use this form to bash co workers. This is not upper management people you are talking about. Even though they have made you and myself angry at times they are not the ones responsible for what is happening to us all.

Anonymous said...

2:50 I agree with you 100% except Kyle Moore needs to go, his pay would 2 keep at least 2 good people in the pressroom from losing there jobs.

People get into the newspaper business because they have a passion for it. They want to make a difference. The Star-Telegram once was a great paper. It's a tough industry, and the only ones who are really going to be hurt are the readers. Not just readers of the Star-Telegram, but all newspapers as this industry is facing challenging times. Government needs good watchdogs. People need to be educated and informed. Unfortunately that is not happening.

Anonymous said...

If we lose more pressman then it will be because the business sucks not cause of TC. It is hard to make friends after being promoted into the office but someone has to do the job and most that complain cannot do the job or do not want it anyway. It is probably true that we need more change in the managers in production cause it is full of posers all the way to the top.

Face it guys McClatchy brought the biggest problems with them and that is the end of it. The debt from buying all the knightridder papers overall newspaper downturn and problems with the economy are what is responsible for damage to ad sales.

Employees need to stick together through this and stop trying to shove someone into the pit first cause it will not solve anything.

Anonymous said...

Wait a minute guys- Tommy Carr is a jerk- he has no management skills and what about all the complaints on him-he is all for himself- a real loser and should see how it feels to be picked on -and what work does he do nothing but playcards on the computer and leave early every morning- Kyle moore he is worthless- he has been moved all over and has messed up everything he has done- Why hell Robert Johnson can do the lay-outs. Now we got Mark B. LISTED AS A PRESSMAN and he has never been on the press and gave him seniority over a lot of guys- lets quit hiding guys and do what is right. Get rid of T.C.,Mark B, and Kyle Moore an d what the hell does Richard Hooper do- Lets not forget all the supervisors in maint. dept- lets trim the fat - do u need J.r. or Jessie or Don gget rid of 2- peace out guys-I got 20 years and still not safe.

Anonymous said...

They are called supervisors cause they do not know how to do the jobs so maybe mark is a supervisor too now.

How bad is it when there is no upper promotion for anyone in 12 years in the pressoom and maint has been a joke for longer than that. Same in charge employees for how long in some places and Donnie is still manaegr. Hooper was a motor boat driver until we got a new publisher. Keese knows where the pressroom office is at least but cares less about morale.

Good managers in pressroom and press maint could fix the problmes we have on the press. Registration on the press sucks but we feed the cow every day.

I had 20 years in at the S-T. When I left, within 1 1/2 months I was working another job that has much better benefits and much better pay. I wish all of you current employees success, either at S-T or elsewhere. For the most part, S-T has a great group of people that want to see the paper succeed. It's unfortunate that McClatchy doesn't want it to.

Hey guys, its ok to be pissed off excuse the langauge, but its not ok to attack guys personally, we all know at the Star T there are jerks, there are jerks playthings and theres the good guys, but give the speed bumps some credit, they cant help it if they sold us up the river. how about no names metioned and just a brief resume of their non achievements.
and anyway I agree with yous all. just being nice thats all.

Damn guys, when you start bringing a mans personal life into your issues with him you are sadder than he is, grow up guys, use this blog as something to mean something I dont know the personal issues of the people you are talking about, but I work with you everys day and if you are that bitter then you are a very sad person. Are you gonna bring up the fact that I had boils on my penis when I was six. You are missing the point guys. every one of you has a ligitimate complaint, stop naming people, we already know who you mean. Or at the least if your gonna name them me man or woman enough to type your name at the bottom, hugs a friend in the smae position you are.

Sounds like morale at the Star-Telegram south plant is at an all-time high. That, or they're drinking on the job. Maybe our crack inspector on the second floor downtown should go investigate. But, I'm telling you ... I don't know who this Paul cat is, but it sounds to me as if he's had the best year of any employee in the McClatchy chain: He scored some strange AND his wife left him. That's called lucky. Can it get much better than that? Even in a good year. He's probably now living under a bridge, but he was headed there anyway as a McClatchy employee. Go get them, Paul, and be careful out there. If McClatchy doesn't get you, a woman will.
