Interesting:
Everyone taking their vacation at once? “The paper's bottom line can apparently benefit from being able to show that vacation time is [being paid and not accrued.”] At least it is not an unpaid furlough. It seems to be more of the Knight Ridder acquisition curse.

-Cool vacations--at least with pay-

Beacon Journal staffers are being encouraged to take a week of vacation now, -- apparently because it will show that David Black is meeting his fiscal obligations in a timely fashion. See the recent report on financial status of Black Papers Ltd.

Represented employees can say "no"

Still, for an organization that isn't quite [staffed by even 50 percent of what it once was,] how can it afford to have larger quantities of folks out on vacation at the same time?

FYI: British Columbia-based Black Press bought the Akron Beacon Journal in 2006 when [The McClatchy Co. unloaded a dozen dailies after acquiring Knight Ridder.]

Despite the sad news, I still ask, why buy any newspaper already knowing how they're going to spin any article?

How did MNI come down on the stimulus bill? What is MNI doing to ensure Americans are working, not on welfare, and making the nation strong so they can buy their paper?

Why would MNI laid off people buy their old paper? Not for jobs, Craigslist is for that.

What happened to you people on your way to the selling messiah trinkets forum?

Anonymous 8:08 -- the Sacramento Bee ran a pro-stimulus cartoon in today's newspaper. I don't think they have printed an editorial on the stimulus bill, though.

News report say Barry if flying around the country to promote his zillion dollar stimulus bill. It didn’t say this was costing the US taxpayers millions. He could have just used his ACORN thugs again, it would have much cheaper, but then, that wouldn't be the 'Change' he promised.

Finally.

Here's what 200 million will get you.

For several months the copper siding on the 200 million new press production building needed to be replace. This past week while driving by they were in the process of replacing them.

S.F. Chronicle Charges More for Redesigned Paper, Expects to Lose Readers
By Will Harper in Media

It costs $10 to produce and deliver each copy of the Sunday paper.

The Chron recently raised the newsstand price of its Sunday paper 50 cents to $2.

Meanwhile, the S-T is sending the TV writer around the country to interview a teenager who grew up in the area. Anyone heard of getting stuff like that off the wire?

Lay off the reporters writing local news...forget sending sports guys to State U's bowl game...but by golly, we got some TV reporting. Oh, and follow-up was by phone. That, my friends, is good business, isn't it?

I’m still waiting for any liberal journalist to come here, and tell us how this guy is good for McClatchy, let alone this country.

After all, you all voted for him and supposedly are more educated and in touch than we are (trying ever so hard to be nice here)

I came across the statement that debt-heavy McClatchy, was selling its crown jewel, the Miami Herald. I was wondering why the MH would warrant that distinction?

2:29 They would give The Miami Herald away at this point. It is a BIG loser.

I think this year is just going to get worse and worse...

http://www.fitzandjen.com/2009/02/sp-sees-mcclatchy-cruising-towards-default-.html

Fitz: Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services is out with a note Friday that suggests The McClatchy’s Co. revenue and EBITDA are falling so fast that it will violate its loan agreement -- even with its new looser covenants.

The end result, S&P suggests, could be “a restructuring of some form.”

It is simple. They have a 10 million dollar parking lot that someone wants to buy for 190 million. That would make the homeless mission a crown jewel.

Miami Herald a Crown Jewel?

A co-worker said the MH is a big glass building with a waterfront view. At the time of the KR purchase it was called the diamond jewel of the deal. We all know what a great deal the diamond/glass jewel was? Sadly, it has become a fake zircon no one wants these days.
