A Spammer goes mental

Last night I deleted about 30 spam comments from a creep trying to disrupt the blog. It was interesting to see how innocently his comments started out. Here's an early one:
I appreciate McClatchy Watch for having this blog but I too get tired of the political rants but this is his blog. I'm sure that Kevin wants to support all blogs that have McClatchy news. For those would would like to take a peak: www.*******.blogspot.com

See? Nothing wrong with that. Just innocent sharing of web sites and news articles, which is common in the comments section here. And which I encourage. After several posts he gets a little more bold and complaining about "right wing rants" on the blog. He evidently worked himself into a frenzy by the end of the day -- check out one of the very last posts from the spammer:

Put Kevin and McClatchy Watch out of business. Go here: www.*****s2.blogspot.com. Then delete your McClatchy Watch bookmark and don't come back. Watch his page views sink.
So his real agenda isn't to share McClatchy information, what he wants to do is damage this blog. (And by the way, I'm not posting the web site URL because I understand it has malware and could damage your computer.)

I've got a pretty good idea who the spammer is -- and he knows I'm on to him because his spamming has slowed way down today. If I am right, some people might be surprised who he is if I reveal his identity.

I can tell you this -- if I am right, there is a McClatchy connection.

Coming in at 2:1 is Howard Weaver followed closely by the Cross Dressing Duo the Zieman Brothers at 3:1. All fine examples of enlightened public celebrity.

I still find your blog relevant and useful. I want to personally thank you for helping my decision to leave my McClatchy job. As hard as it was to leave, I landed in a much better place, doing what I love. Please keep posting useful information, so that my former co-workers can make educated decisions about their careers. Life is too short to have someone else dictate your destiny.

Great catch!

Goebbels would turn you over to the SS, Castro would put you in a jail, Stalin would send you to the gulag, and MNI will send another web troll after you.

Remember, it’s MNI’s warped, “Truth to Power” Heil Lokeman!

How corrupt is MNI/MSM?

Charles Foster Kane: You're right, I did lose a million dollars last year. I expect to lose a million dollars this year. I expect to lose a million dollars *next* year.

You know, Mr. Thatcher, at the rate of a million dollars a year, I'll have to close this place in... 60 years.

Well, being that the movie was released in 1941, he came pretty close. Only off by 8 years.

(Not my quote or insight. Call me -MNI junior; kind of an AP cut and paste job, but obviously not from AP)

You’d think they’d spend more time fixing their business, but I think they know it’s too late.

So like Hitler, a Stalin purge, or any lib business person (oxymoron), they blame others, raise taxes, or flee to a govt. job

...Pull back the curtain, Kevin. You describe the fellows postings as starting out rational and descending into madness. Drugs do that, or maybe he's just Goofy by nature. Show us the loony.

My sister fled from journalism to education for a safe job. She says the teacher’s union has ruined education. It is, if that could be possible, worse than the newspaper’s union. The state worker’s union is bent on ruining that profession as well. I see no hope, unless mediocrity and unprofessional behavior becomes your way of life. How did these once rewarding, and needed professions, became bastions for liberal Democrats? We watch as these institutions crumble before our very eyes.

If someone came to this blog to spread a virus, then he should be punished. I am glad I didn't give a shit about the loon in the first place.

Your powers of deduction are astounding. What was your first clue, the profile at the top of the site that says "I am employed at a large-market McClatchy newspaper"?

How would he know that? My virus protection wouldn't even let it open the page. Whoever is responsible for that should be arrested and imprisoned.

There's no virus. That's pure hooey.

Jim Witt at it again. Just don't erase his OOPS posting.

I am pretty sure a blogging site owned by Google (blogger.com) would not allow malware on their servers.

Since both blogs are hosted on the same platform I think it is just misinformation to discredit the other site.

I agree with 12:56. I've been on the other site, and neither Norton nor ZoneAlarm raised a peep.

Anonymous said...

You are 12:56 and Norton does pick it up. So does Defender, BO, Comodo, SBSD.

It is "unclassified Malware" it has been quarantined, documented and forwareded to the proper authorities, so good night script kiddie.

Anonymous said...

12:56 I have also been on that site multiple times today. There are no problems with it. You are correct.

Anonymous said...

Hope for your sake he cleaned it up. Which site is clean? He was spamming 2 of them.

No I'm not, and no it doesn't.
(Ever notice that if you disagree with one of the angry half-wits on this site, you're automatically a liberal, and if TWO people disagree, they're automatically the same person?)

I don't know who you are. What I do know is that you are an obsessed nutcase and you need some serious help.

Now go hawk your wares on the Gannett site you're so enamored with, because the people here are onto your game.

Could the mystery spammer be Gary Pruitt?

Anonymous said...

Nah, I don't think he would have the smarts to include a call home tracker. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if he paid someone to do it though. Spoofed site with a little bot is all it takes. Average person would never even know.

Anonymous said...

Yesterday Norton did pick up that site as dangerous. It depends on your settings. I don't ever override Norton’s warnings. Anyone spamming the same site over and over is sick. Why would anyone with any sense want to hookup with a nutcase? Most McC employees aren’t that far gone. Your marketing skills stink, go stink up another blog.

If you don’t like this blog, why do you come here? Is it in the genes of liberals that they must ruin everything they touch. Did it ever occur to you that the people that come here find information they can use during these troubled times? No it wouldn’t, why try to reason with a nutcase? There are places for malcontent people like you. Please go find it. Let the interested people discuss grownup matters in peace.

You better run a full computer scan. I picked up a tracking cookie. Who knows who is tracking what? Danger, be careful with spammers!

While I was in college, a suspected virus sender’s information was sent to the college security, then on to the state authorities, and I think they looked into it. It is a crime not taken lightly. I know the suspected person left college in the middle of the semester.

3:56 Yea you'll do anything say, anything to keep people off that site. Actually, it is run like the Gannett site. Pretty good.

You don't have to visit it.

Anonymous said...

No one here gives a rat's ass about that site beyond spamming it here, and then trying to upload malicious software when you visit it.

You need to get that through your thick little leftist head and move on with your life. You've been caught and that is all there is to it.

Frankly, anyone who wants to go there anyway, more power to them. They have been warned so it is on them.

My post: "Ever notice that if you disagree with one of the angry half-wits on this site, you're automatically a liberal?"

Their posts: "Is it in the genes of liberals that they must ruin everything they touch." ... and ... "You need to get that through your thick little leftist head and move on with your life."

I would like to thank the half-wits at 3:50 and 5:09 for proving my point for me. (I'm a registered Republican, by the way.)

lol i know, thank god someone put up a blog for for employees

The guy that keeps throwing around the word leftist has ruined this site.

I and everyone else who works with me came to this blog by word of mouth. It was a great blog for mcclatchy news and to hear employees talk. now it is full of a grown man acting like a child everyday all day. sigh.

good luck with your blog was nice for awhile.

that has run its course.

i got to wonder how interesting this blog would be without all the leftist... which is everyone that works for mcclatchy.

Not me. I got to wonder how interesting McClatchy papers are going to be without them! The axe is coming. Get out your tin cups!

Thanks for this blog. Newspapers have big impacts on their towns, and before the Internet, there was not much recourse for to discuss a paper's merits or shortcomings.
