Nine positions eliminated at McClatchy Interactive... wage cuts to be implemented

Via comments:
MI lost 9 positions, 3 actual cuts and salary reduction of 2.5% under $50,000, 5% between $50,000 and $100,000 and 10% over $100,000.
Six positions were lost through attrition, so just 3 actual layoffs.

how many made $100k/yr.??

Would only be VP level above in my guess. That would be 6 or 7?

That would include two useless VPs at MI.

Why do we need a VP of HR when there is only one person in the dept?!

Why do we effectively have two business dev VPs - one for a now frozen vertical market research group of one?! This is his 3rd job description change yet he retains a VP status... way to save money!!

David Fitzpatrick?

There are at least two senior developers who I know earn over 100k.

i can't believe that had the audacity to cut pay but not touch hours. I mean, make them unpaid vacation days or furlough or something. This is pathetic. It's sheer "we don't care about you"

Anonymous said...

And you actually thought they did care? Where have you been the last 12+ months?

"Here's lookin' at you!" ;-)

For perspective, how many total employees did McClatchy Interactive have?

little less than 130

A couple of points. To get the same effect from wage cuts, people would have to be furloughed for a minimum of two weeks. To get to 10% would require 5 weeks. Not gonna happen.

As I understood it vertical markets were not frozen, a more disciplined approach has been applied to launching sites. Also, Fitzpatrick does more than verticals. Rather than guess about what he does, go to his office and ask him. Same holds true for the HR vp. Just a thought that may provide better analysis.

I'm sure that both positions do more than their job titles would entail, but I do agree that holding a title such as VP would mean having more than one person and/or more than one or two tasks under their belts, which i don't think either of them do or have.

Thanks for the voice of reason, 1:53.

Dear 1:53. No one said furloughs would have "the same effect."

The point is, they could have thrown us a friggin bone. Take take take, but give nothing back. When the economy finally turns, so will the once-loyal employees.
