Ann Caulkins publishes "letter to readers" in Charlotte Observer, yawns abound

Several readers tipped me to the letter Ann Caulkins published in yesterday's Charlotte Observer. As I type this, the letter has been on the Charlotte Observer web site for over 24 hours and there are only 9 comments. Click here to see the letter and comments.

And all the comments are negative. Some are just bitter conservatives, but still...

It could be that because this ran as full-page ad on A3 yesterday readers are confused.

Unclear to me if this was a house ad, Ann paid for the space herself, or what.

I just know that fact that the copy now has turned up as an op-ed of sorts certainly has me confused.

At any rate, the ad-vertorial did prompt this LtE today:

In a full-page ad (March 25) Observer Publisher Ann Caulkins bids goodbye to dedicated employees, but says, “We grew up here as an institution – now more than 120 years old – and I believe that we will be here 120 years from now.” (Emphasis mine.)

Yesterday I called the Observer's 800 number to ask about my subscription rate and immediately confronted a language barrier. The nice lady I talked to said she was in Manila. Could the Observer not make use of some of its former employees in this position rather than turning to Filipinos?

How many Observer subscribers are in the Philippine Islands? How many papers, classified ads and wedding announcements are sold and read in the Philippines?

Donald J. Price

Wonder what Mr. Price would say if he knew MNI was pasting-up ads off-shore...

How about saying, justified conservatives? It is apparent the dead-ender Teleprompter voter learned nothing?
Buh bye, see you at the pink slip party.

Christ almighty, that teleprompter schtick is getting old. Even bloggers on the right are dismissing that meme. Move on.

Obama's schtick is what's getting old. It's not even April, and even the radical left already realizes what a horrendous mistake it was to elect him.

For a peek into what the next 46 months will bring, here's some light reading --

Statements like “Some are just bitter conservatives“ fully illustrates why liberal journalists are useless to the new media. The controlled audience is gone.

Anytime biased writing hit’s the Internet, it will outed, and then rejected. You might ask what a hit in credibility the Huffington Post took for a liberal flight of fancy recently? Only the hardcore haters of the USA will be interested in such biased untrue tripe. Wake up and smell the stink!

Hopeless writes “teleprompter schtick’, still feeling that tingle up the leg sport? Go ahead and scratch it, but not in public if you don’t mind.

You are reading conservative bloggers for this information? Bwhahahahaha

Phi Beta Cons, New name for Barry’s egghead advisers.

Ann Caulkins is just another dinosaur, who is still clinging to her old, petrified model of public communication. I seriously doubt she has a clue about the real future of journalism. She will probably go teach at college where her expertise in communication failure will be appreciated.

I heard this humorous/scary remark today, “Barry Soetoro has amassed a host of Phi Beta Cons to help him control the US population. None of his advisors had ever held a real job, or lived in a world outside their liberal temples of the elite.” Now anyone can make a case for true Marxists giving input into the administration of our US government.

The Charlotte Observer outsourced it's entire advertising production department to the Philippine's last year. Not only are sales reps under a lot of pressure from management to sell, they also have to deal with the cultural differences of the new graphics dept.

Just recently, the accounting/credit dept. was outsourced to India. My guess is now the customer service dept. has been outsourced, too.

I wonder how many of these overseas employees have actually ever read the paper?

Shock and awe! It was impossible to get permission for house space for ads promoting any of the features we were trying hard to sell but apparently a "damage control" full page ad is easily justified.

The unions, the gay agenda, radical environmentalists, feminist hags, abortionists, global warming freaks, ACORN, and the other warped groups will never leave the Democrats where insanity rules.

The independent voters, and those with religious ties, are the ones that regret their votes already. Falling for a phony electronic, programmed speaker, without the qualification of even running a successful lemonade stand, is a cross they have to bear.
BO’s approval rating is 50% and dropping like a rock. He just needs a few more tax cheats in his administration to fix that.

You're going to have to find a new well to dip from. I think the IRS announced today that all unincarcerated tax evaders have now been found. They're all at Chairman 0's old house in New Mogadishu (Chicago)

From the list below, you forgot one fringe, nutjob lefty group - mainstream media.

I know the problem I have with conservatives is that so _very_ many of them tend to be bullies.
Mean-spirited seems to be the status quo.
And several of y'all here that post only reinforce that stereotype.
It's why I left the the party and never looked back.
This blog may be a good source of McClatchy scuttle, but it's certainly not a place for reasonable or balanced discourse on the future of media or politics.
There are good Americans on the right, the left and down the middle. Just like there are good reporters of all sorts of backgrounds who work very hard to serve as watchdogs to our democracy.
Show a little respect, if you fancy yourself to be a respectable person.
Otherwise, you are just like everything you criticize. You make our world a crappier place.
And we got enough of that going around these days.

This blog would be much more interesting if we could eliminate talk about the Obamas and the Bushes. Then we could concentrate what is going on inside The Charlotte Observer.

The drama, the backstabbing, the nose picking and story about how the directors and managers ran TCO off a cliff would be educational for everyone. I bet Gary Pruitt would be shocked.

I think Ann Caulkins and her band of "merry men" and "lovely women buds" are the ones that keep posting this Obama and Bush stuff just to keep the real story about what they have done to ruin a company from being reported.

They closed down the bathrooms because they did not want to pay someone to clean them. There is no toilet paper and you need to bring yours from home in case you have an emergency. They left a couple of cublicles on each floor open and they are filthy. Men just go outside and use the bushes when they can get away with it. They have to wait in line to get into the men's room that only has one stall. Have you ever heard of such poor ethical standards for a company to treat the workers.

They found some cheap toilet paper and paper towels that fall apart when you try to pull them out of the dispensers. Most of the dispensers don't work. They fired the part-timers who were the people who cleaned the restrooms. I think someone said their are 3 stalls for men on the fourth floor and 4 for women. That is where the newsroom and operational people work. This is the busiest floor in the building.

Then they have the nerve to say how much they appreciate the people who work so hard to get the paper on the street everyday. Would you feel better if you could not find a place to use the restroom.

Heads Up - New important information about toilet paper.

Hell yes, I want to discuss your bathrooms and TP needs. That is way more interesting than how the Lame Stream Media shoved BO, a former drug user down our throats. Hell yes!

----------
I think you're confused. Otherwise how would we explain the fact that over 90% of the prison population affiliates with democrats and Obama?

Granted most conservative are pretty happy that print media, especially ideological based companies like McClatchy are going under. That doesn't mean they want to beat you up.

I guess if we're going to jump on your stereotyping bandwagon. What bothers me about Liberals is, so _very_ many of them tend to be whining little parasites always begging for handouts and special treatment. Either that or nut hugging radical muslim terrorist hoping they will not ship their little heads home to mommy in a box.

Anonymous said...

Bullies may not be an accurate enough term. Assholes might be better. The above comment at 6:09 p.m. is a perfect example.
Most of the whining I hear about is RIGHT HERE from conservatives who seem to forget that THEY LOST.
Liberals lived with 8 years of the Bush Whitehouse. Y'all had your turn and you blew it.
Suck it up. It's time for the other team to fix things. So either help make things better or shut up.
Also ... with regards to the "90%+" of prison population statement: can you please source that?
It's an interesting stat. I'm wondering where it came from....

"So either help make things better or shut up."

You didn't shut up during Bush's time in office. Why should we, you big hypocrite?

Anonymous said...

FYI the news & observer is going to run a similar thing on Sunday from Quarles.

Anonymous said...

You didn't shut up during Bush's time in office.

No. Nor should we have. The man was a complete and utter cluster**** from beginning to end.

Anonymous said...

"You didn't shut up during Bush's time in office. Why should we, you big hypocrite?"

And this was the response to "So either help make things better or shut up."

Like I said, nothing more than bullies. People like you are an embarrassment. Didn't your parents teach you manners?

I happened to have voted for Bush (once) and was a Republican for most of my life. I left the party because it was narrow-minded, mean-spirited and incapable of admitting its mistakes (much less learning from them.)

There is a better way, one that takes the best ideas from both parties. Right now, Democrats tend to work with others; Republicans prefer a scorched-earth policy that helps only a very few.

Trying using facts, figures and logic to make your case. Empty rhetoric, misinformation and name-calling is the tools of bullies and assholes.

That's what's disgraced the Republican party. You've lost your way and you don't seem to even have enough sense of respect to realize it.

Again, all you need to do is look at the comments made on this blog, over and over and over again, for examples of this.

Clean up your own house. Come up with better policy. Lead by example.

And, for the love of God, take some accountability for how badly the Bush Administration botched it. Wake up. Loyalty to the party shouldn't mean blind stupidity.

You can't avoid repeating history if you don't learn from your mistakes. There's plenty of blame to go around with this recession. Nearly everyone screwed up.

So study it. Understand it. Use your mind.

Take that and use it to work toward solutions.

Help make things better or please, please, shut up and sit down and let the rest of us get to work saving your ass.

"feminist hags"

Sweet. I was missing some good ol' misogyny amongst the homophobia and racism. Now you've hit the trifecta.

Anonymous said...

“Help make things better or please, please, shut up and sit down and let the rest of us get to work saving your ass.”
-----------
Does that mean we can’t dumpster dive for liberal breaking news any longer?

Anonymous said...

Plenty of real women call the ugly female screechers, "feminist hags," and want no part of their has-been movement.

Don’t assume only men write comments, and if I recognize a loser in feminist drag, I do, and so do you.

Anonymous said...

Really. I'm female, have never heard a woman call another woman a "feminist hag".

I suppose I can imagine what constitutes a hag for you, but do please enlighten me on what constitutes a "feminists". What do these vile creatures believe?

Anonymous said...

Real women wouldn't call anyone a feminist hag.

Real women have class.

And, those real women, who were of a certain age, wore E.R.A. bracelets with pride.

They stood up for their rights and paved the way for a generation.

Bravo to them.

Anonymous said...

Try reading ‘Hag Rag,’ and Google “feminist hag” for forty thousand entries. It is a common term. Try a sorority meeting when the females decide who is in, and who is out. No one thinks anything about it. It like calling men jocks. Geeez!

We still think having a place to go to the restroom is important. We could have had someone to clean them and open all the ones they locked up for the price of Ann Caulkins' full page ad.

What a waste. It might impress someone outside the building but the people inside the building think it is a big joke. She has lost all respect from everyone at the paper except the "Leadership Know Nothings". Most people just turn and go in a different direction if they see any of them coming.

Anonymous said...

Gov. Sarah Palin is the best example of a woman that has it all.

Anonymous said...

Sarah Palin and Ann Caulkins both have what it takes to run a government and a newspaper.

Both are PURTY and have great voice delivery and everyone believes everything they say. They also like to spend other peoples' money on expensive clothes so they will look HOT.

They like to party and be the center of attention, all the things it takes to become a great leader in today's culture.

I have never thought of how much they have in common until you brought it up.

Anonymous said...

Sarah Palin is a successful governor, put down the Kool-aid. Too bad you only read garbage newspapers, and have no idea of the truth. You would not have voted for a teleprompter if you were better informed. Well, maybe you would. Look for your next job in a three page newspaper, or run a little Kool-aid stand to support yourself. You will still have more business experience than Air Obama.
