Lexington guild approves management proposal to cut 14 guild jobs and reduce wages... layoff announcement expected Monday

By a huge margin, the Lexington newspaper guild voted to approve a management proposal to lay off 14 union workers and reduce wages for employees at the Lexington Herald-Leader. A whopping 83% voted in favor of the proposal. The paper is expected to announce layoffs Monday. Click here for details.

According to this note on the guild's web site, the union was hoping the paper would make its layoff announcement Friday, to avoid waiting through the weekend before hearing the news.

"The union movement is all about standing up for the greater good, and today Guild members overwhelmingly voted to make personal sacrifices for the good of their colleagues and the company," Guild president Brandon Ortiz said.

Someone needs to school Brandon about not making, "greater good" statements when his intention is to shift the burden of layoffs from your his special interest group to the larger body of the whole.

On kentucky.com the story goes into more detail and the comments from the community clearly shows how much hate the locals have for the writers at the lexington paper. top mgt broke the link to the community and will never get most customers back unless they give the paper away. Poor decisions by Tim Kelly made a mess of the paper.

What is going to happen is the people who actually generate content will be let go while editors and middle mgmt. live on.

For instance:The interactive dept is lead by someone who does not even know how to do ANY of it.(web stuff, etc)

What does that say about the leaderships decisions at that paper. It is sad that a good profitable paper has fallen so far.

I am afraid the cuts are going to be so much deeper than we've seen before and a huge number of really good, talented are going to be out of work come Monday. God help us all.

they should get rid of top management and save as many less paying jobs as possible. ex. can julie achauer and save 3 other jobs given the salary she pulls down. the front line does the work anyway and people like her just sit and complain and curse. foul mouths like hers don't deserve their job when so many would be grateful

I wouldn't be critical about how someone does their job until you've had the same job. It's not always what it appears to be from the outside.

I would not like to be the one making the decision that will change someone's life. Good, bad or ugly, people are affected by job loss. Everybody is having sleepless nights waiting for the "ax" to fall, either on themselves or their co-workers.
