The Modesto Bee newspaper guild votes Monday on management's proposal of layoffs, wage cuts, and other reductions.
Management says if the Guild approves the contract, the Bee will lay off 11 in the bargaining unit. If the Guild rejects the contract, the Bee will lay off 21. The proposal also involves pay cuts and unpaid furloughs in the second half of 2009. For more details on the Modesto proposal, click here.
I predict a big majority will affirm management's proposal. In Sacramento there was a lot of pre-vote bluster about rejecting the contract, but in the end 65% voted for management's plan.
UPDATE: In comments, a recommendation: VOTE NO!

The Modesto Bee has always been the stepsister of the three bees. This is your opportunity to tell them where to stick it Modesto Guild. I say GO BIG OR GO HOME.
The Modesto Bee has alway been considered the only shop that employed real, decent and upstanding union members too. I wonder if that has changed.
I wonder why there is such a caste system m in such a PC company. There are so big onlooking down on different papers and different sections.
Vote NO? Meaning more layoffs, as that what you want...Wow...we don;t need to make a statement, we need to save jobs...THINK PEOPLE!
Yeah thats right people think before you vote. because after you vote YES ..turn around and vote YES to get rid of your union. We all know who runs things around here McClatchy Corporate. Like I said GO BIG or GO HOME.
