Pinks slips being handed out in Modesto? (updated twice)

Via comments:

Word is that layoffs have begun in Modesto. Apparently four sportswriters have been canned today.
More as news comes in.

UPDATE: Another commenter says the sports dept took a hit but is still in business.
"The sports editor was laid off... One sports writer and two sports copy editors took buyouts... It leaves four sports writers in Modesto as the sports staff. People are being shuffled around to handle the sports copy editing..."
UPDATE #2: False alarm? I haven't heard about any other pink slips being handed out.

Guess the Sac Bee sports staff will be putting out Modesto's section too. Look for consolidation as the key word of the future.

It has been in the works now for some time to share sports scores and editorial content. Modesto is just moving ahead with the plan now. Lets see I bet between the three Bees Modesto is the first to go Online only first. Who is the new publisher at the MOdesto Bee.

The McClatchy Co. named Eric E. Johnston as president and publisher of The Modesto Bee.
Johnston, 37, has been with The Bee since 2000, most recently as vice president of interactive media.

This is the first time in McClatchy's history that a publisher has come from the digital ranks of the company.

Its all written in stone. Just watch and see.

Rumors of sports staff layoffs in Modesto are not true.

The sports editor was laid off. His last day will be Friday. One sports writer and two sports copy editors took buyouts. Their final day also will be Friday. It leaves four sports writers in Modesto as the sports staff. People are being shuffled around to handle the sports copy editing. Since the number of people taking buyouts was greater than management anticipated, several copy editors' jobs were spared.

As far as Sacramento reporters covering Modesto, do the geography, people. As long as Modesto remains 85 miles from Sacramento, no sports writers will be making the southward drive to handle the local live coverage/features that drives Modesto's sports coverage.

In all, Modesto management promised 11 layoffs after the Guild accepted that proposal. Two photo tech positions were eliminated. Eight union-covered staffers took buyouts. Management now confirms there will be no layoffs beyond the two photo techs, so the final number of non-management newsroom cuts in Modesto is 10.

No, this news is not good. Spreading false rumors doesn't help the situation.

"Word is that layoffs have begun in Modesto. Apparently four sportswriters have been canned today."

That is the problem with this blog. The above headline is so absolutely false it's astonishing. It makes one wonder about the journalism practices, or lack thereof, of the person running this blog.

How can anyone trust it? A former journalist couldn't be running it, right?

Bee-ing from a McClatchy paper you should never utter the words, "journalistic practices."

It leads to ferreting out your own. Not a good thing when one can fill volumes with your own fraudulent material.

Modesto sports scores will either be sent from Bangladesh or called in by the coaches. National sports will be status quo...off the wire! (if they remember).
(Interesting that word verification is unite)
Johnston has pixels for brain cells. He helped shove Modesto Bee and McClatchy in general into the cyber world. What am I going to line my parakeet cage with now?
Look for more cuts at Modesto in a couple months (rumor has it).
