Rumor: layoff announcements at Fort Worth Star-Telegram within a week

Layoff news at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram might come sooner rather than later. From a comment at Newspapertrails:

A reporter at the FWS-T ran into the publisher in the elevator today. He questioned him about our situation. He said that announcements will be made within a week and that the cuts will be deeper than what was expected. Apparently ad revenue is tanking by the day.

Management at each newspaper has already crunched the numbers and submitted their plan. The only thing left is for McClatchy's corporate Hatchet Man Team to go the individual papers and deliver the news.

Ad revenue tanking by the day? How so? Have I been missing something? (sarc off)

The Star Telegram announced that they are raising the cost of their single copy sales at the end of March. That information was listed on page 6b of this past Sunday's newspaper.

The NBC affiliate covered this story Monday night.

As of COB Tuesday, there has been no notification from our publisher of the price increase?

I find this so disrespectful that it's disgusting.

Why wouldn't anyone want to pay more for a paper that lists Colleyville Heritage High School as being in Grapevine? Why wouldn't someone want to pay more for a paper that picks up day-old news from the Dallas Morning News? Why not pay more for a paper that lets you pick prom posies for a teenager? Makes perfect sense to me...

Respect? You got to be kidding me. "Hatchet Man" Wortel has given the finger to the staff as well as the Fort Worth community since he came here a year ago. His one-track mind knows only one thing: Cut costs as much as possible to send money back to McCrappy. His leadership is in the tank, the septic tank. And the odor is becoming unbearable.

This is and has been very predictable. These things always work on the corporate quarterly calendar, notification Monday, two weeks until our last day, end of the month reporting, and things will be wrapped up and people out the door nice and tidy by the 30th. End of the quarter.

Pressman have been told that Mar. 16 thru Mar. 29 no vacations can be taken. The book is closed. Something is fixin' to happen.

Can anyone explain to me how a newspaper that is going under can have the gall to raise its prices, we need a free paper no charge to sell our ads. I understand that the actual cost of the paper does not pay for the running of the paper. So go figure, charge more lose more charge less gain more. I am thinking that management schools and business schools teach something different. Again my answer is if your losing sales reduce the price. Day to day common sense, so what does our paper do increase the price way to go bancruptcy waiting to happen.
