Gary Wortel was on channel 5 news last night. He said the Star-Telegram would be around for another 100 yrs. Man you talk about b******t, I can't believe he thanks he can blow that kind of smoke.

Anonymous said...

He also said there wouldn't be anymore layoffs, the building won't be put up for sale, there won't be content sharing, etc.

I passed him in the hallway last week. It did cross my mind to spit in his face, but since I made the cut on this round, why shoot myself in the foot.

ok...it's a trend. The Columbus Ledger heard that "This is the last of the layoffs" the first time. And here we are at round 3...

Anonymous said...

I bet we (FWST) don't have another round.

Seriously, there is nothing left to cut. Out of business signs will be next, but we are all guessing a merger with the DMN is on the horizon and the idiot Wartel will just let us all go after that.

Very bad situation and bad for the community.

The video attached is interesting.
The visit by Jim Witt on WBAP radio for an interview this morning was canceled by Witt.....actually they said canceled by McClatchy.

I guarantee you will have another round AND a sudden increase in terminations for cause. After that will come bankruptcy filings with another, and the first meaningful round of layoffs that actually hit the meat of the problem.

What would Witt talk about, saving the Elvis club?

Hey! What happened to the pity party, spammer's blog? I needed a dose of sympathy and it's gone!

6:31 I agree with you, there is an article on the internet about 10 newspapers that either shut down or go digital. It has S-T shutting down if we don't merge with DMN. I believe its true. Don't U thank Amon Carter is rolling over in his grave. Bass brothers help keep this a local newspaper, it makes money.

Just found a phone list from Jan 2006. The Bradenton Herald has dropped from 217 fte's to 125 fte's in 3 years or 42%. We are waiting for our announcement next week regarding our contibution to McClatchy cost cutting.

Wow! Miami Herald gets clobbered. 20 percent reduction in workforce and salary cuts of 10 percent

Didn't Wortel say last night that the S-T is profitable? Why don't some local business buy the S-T. The Bass family would be good, they could turn the business around, back to local thinking and news coverage. Not sure if SEC will allow DMN to buy S-T. DMN will just have to wait until McClatchy has closed the doors and then heavily move into the market.

If thou survive my well-contented day,
When that churl death my bones with dust shall cover
And shalt by fortune once more re-survey
These poor rude lines of thy deceased lover:
Compare them with the bett'ring of the time,
And though they be outstripped by every pen,
Reserve them for my love, not for their rhyme,
Exceeded by the height of happier men.
O then vouchsafe me but this loving thought,
'Had my friend's Muse grown with this growing age,
A dearer birth than this his love had brought
To march in ranks of better equipage:
But since he died and poets better prove,
Theirs for their style I'll read, his for his love'.

Bass family (and some others) probably would buy S-T but MNI is too greedy for money and their sale pricing would be too high. Best to wait for the Fire Sale (post bankruptcy) but by then MNI may have ruined the whole thing and too much great talent and loyalty would be out the door at this "cutting rate".

I say another cut in June is coming.

House votes 91-5 to give struggling newspapers a tax break.

Looks like Washington state is going to grant a tax break to the industry that has never met a tax increase they didn't like.

Amazing.

Hey,you miss a day and you miss a lot! What's this??

"There are plenty of meanspirited people in the world. I have just encountered a handful at McClatchyWatch. Seems many of those folks are bent on exposing me. Sorry folks, but the risk to my family is too ..."

Guess you've seen the layoff list from The Bee Guild site:

http://www.beeguildnow.org/

They already named their own names.

6:45, Witt missed too much of his beauty sleep last night to be on the radio this morning. He called after deadline to make sure the Mavs score got in.

To the person with the 6:48am post, I would be curious to hear your definition of "the meat of the probem" is.

Anonymous said...

11:25 I guess u eat veggies alone.

Anonymous said...

11:25 AM "The Meat of the problem" are easy to define. They are those who missed the cut. People like the editorial board and the minions of VP's and Managers who enabled and encouraged the demise of public trust.

It is all good though because their time is coming sooner rather than later.

You should know dahlin. You were the one that started all that, "Meanspirited" shit and it backfired on your ass.

Next time you decide to try and wreck something belonging to someone else, make sure you hosed your own hole first.

No one really wants to harm you. They just wanted you to stop spamming the blog and quit demanding that only what you wished be discussed.

A former KC Star reporter recalls the leadership:

I don't know what happened to newspapertrails blog but the person running that blog was not the person spamming McClatchy Watch - in fact, the blogger asked repeatedly that people stop doing that. It was a well run site for people wanting to get away from the political rants that are often found here - I don't see what's wrong w/ that. Perhaps the spammer was a fan of this site trying to stir up trouble! If so it looks like the succeeded! What a shame.

Not that I know of, but I am not looking. It doesn't really matter anymore. If she does, she can't pull the same stuff again because you'll know who she is.

Personally though, I think she/he has learned the lesson of the jungle. When slinging shit, do it from the tree tops. That way, those beneath you can't dress you out in your own poop.

Anonymous said...

4:22 PM Yes she/he was spamming the blog. She may have quit before others, but she/he started and initially encouraged it.

The worst part about it though, had she simply asked, I have no doubt Kevin would have bent over backwards to have helped her from the beginning. Person that he is, he was the first to recognize that she/he was not a threat, and the last to recognize that her intent was malicious.

(sorry Kevin) LOL

4:36 I plead guilty -- I was slow to catch on to what she wanted to do to this blog.

No sweat. After spending so many years surrounded by Bee's, PI's, Gate's and Hearst's, enemy identification has to become something of a challenge for even the most elite of warrior.

I'm new. Who is "she" (spammer?)? A brief history, if it's not too much to ask? I'm interested?

Whoever hath her wish, thou hast thy will,
And 'Will' to boot, and 'Will' in over-plus,
More than enough am I that vex thee still,
To thy sweet will making addition thus.
Wilt thou whose will is large and spacious,
Not once vouchsafe to hide my will in thine?
Shall will in others seem right gracious,
And in my will no fair acceptance shine?
The sea all water, yet receives rain still,
And in abundance addeth to his store,
So thou being rich in will add to thy will
One will of mine to make thy large will more.
Let no unkind, no fair beseechers kill,
Think all but one, and me in that one 'Will.'

You guys are crazy. The owner of newspapertrails had no intention of trying to hurt this blog.

You on the other hand, did try to hurt that blog, and succeeded. Too bad, because now you lost a good source of info.
