McClatchy says its daily circulation is down 9% from last year

Here are the circulation figures McClatchy announced yesterday:
  • daily circulation is down 9.0% compared to 1st quarter 2008

  • Sunday is down 6.5% compared to 1st quarter 2008
I have no idea how this compares industry wide. The Audit Bureau of Circulations releases circulation numbers Monday.

Lots more info inside McClatchy's SEC filing from yesterday (click here to see it) plus the earnings call. I recommend you keep checking the comments section for more info.

I CAN'T FOR THE LIFE OF ME FIGURE OUT WHY?

McClatchy Employees Cheer Iraqi Shoe Tosser as Stock Plunges 99%
By P.J. Gladnick | December 25, 2008

I applauded this act. I don’t care that it is rude. Why are we concerned about etiquette when a country was destroyed? Did Bush ever apologize to the Iraqis for the hundreds of thousands of dead? Bush is an occupier, a clown pretending to be a hero, so enclosed in his own little self-certain world he probably was surprised an Iraqi could be that angry.

I am not surprised. I am only surprised such a thing did not happen earlier.

...the McClatchey reporters covering Bush’s visit to Iraq laughed when he got a shoe thrown at him....laughed out loud mind you!....at their President being insulted by foreigners....F**k McClatchey!....I can’t wait for their bankruptcy.

I CAN'T FOR THE LIFE OF ME FIGURE OUT WHY?

Because as Walcott said in his acceptance speech for his created award for excellence. "His key to success was in taking the side of dissent (Saddam Hussein) over the side of the exiles. (The U.S.)"

There are a few things glossed over and flat out denied by the likes of McClatchy and fellow travelers such as CNN for example.

The name of the enemy defeated in both cases is in it's unabbreviated form, "The Ba'ath Socialist Party which has deep tentacles into the DNC and individual democrat politicians. Nancy Pelosi (Home Gurl to Pruitt) who as you recall made her trip acting as a shadow government to Syria despite being a clear violation of the Logan act to visit the leadership of you guessed it...The Ba'ath Socialist Party.

It all comes down to money and like mindedness.

CNN as you recall was caught red handed admitting that they had slanted their coverage, and acted as Saddam's intelligence wing in exchange for greater access resulting in the firing of their big mouthed CEO after he drunkenly blurted out his allegation of Americans targeting journalists at a high level dinner with the wrong people present. When the truth finally came out, he was acting directly under order from none other than Commrade Ted Turner. Several of their own anchors admitted that they were ordered to report "news" favorable to the enemy even though they new for a fact that what they were reporting was completely false.

MSNBC- There are no surprises here. After all, they are owned by the very company caught red handed in direct violation of law with billions in contracts with none other than IRAN.

There are no surprises here. These folks are traitors at the highest levels. The only real question is why no one ever went after them for being traitors. I suspect that the reason would be because if they had, the opposition would have lost key people of their own who were also taking money from the enemy. Either that, or they just didn't have the balls to fight the fight.

Before a former copy editor claims the truth is a lie because of a typo.

It's a waste of time asking you people not to be morons, but it's like this: If a McClatchy staffer laughed at the shoe throwing incident, it was one of the five or six Iraqi journalists who work for the company in Baghdad, not the lone westerner.
I can't condone the laughter, but it doesn't surprise or upset me.
If the situation was reversed, with an Iraqi president doing here what we did there and getting a shoe tossed, most of the people on this web site would cheer too.
In fact, most of you KKK rejects would probably cheer yourselves if the Iraqi had thrown a shoe at Obama.
Look in the mirror, whiney little paper patriots.

Dave D.,
Why don't you look up that "former copy editor" and try to say a single word of that to his face?

The Democrats are the original party of the KKK. That must make you proud. Robert Kennedy went after Martin Luther King, using his government position to employ strong arm tactics against the civil rights movement. Too bad you missed a few history lessons. When you resort to the KKK card, just remember it is the Democrats you are calling names in your remarks. Senator Byrd must be your hero, right?

DYK-KKK Terrorist Arm of the Democrat Party
By Frances Rice

History shows that the Ku Klux Klan was the terrorist arm of the Democrat Party. This ugly fact about the Democrat Party is detailed in the book, A Short History of Reconstruction, (Harper & Row Publishers, Inc., 1990)

Moody's: McClatchy's $2.2 Billion Debt Load 'Becoming Unsustainable'

CHICAGO Moody’s Investors Service declared Friday that The McClatchy Co.’s $2.2 billion in debt is “becoming unsustainable” -- and could force it to breach its lending agreements or seek restructuring.

Moody’s downgraded McClatchy’s Corporate Family Rating and Probability of Default ratings to Caa1 from B2. The new lower rating signifies “very poor quality” debt, and is the last step before a C, or default, rating.

“The downgrade reflects Moody's concern that McClatchy's high and increasing leverage is becoming unsustainable and that there is heightened risk that continued revenue pressure could lead to a covenant violation or restructuring over the next 12-24 months,” wrote Moody’s Vice President and Senior Analyst John E. Puchalla.

Moody’s said McClatchy’s so-called leverage ratio -- measured as amount of debt compared to EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) – was “approximately 9 times” for the last 12 months ended in March. By comparison, Tribune Co. had an estimated leverage ratio of 9.2 times debt to EBITDA when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Sacramento, Calif.-based McClatchy, publisher of The Miami Herald and about 50 other dailies -- has a policy of not commenting on ratings actions. McClatchy on Thursday reported a first-quarter loss of $37.7 million, or 45 cents a share, propelled by ad revenue that plummeted 29.5% compared to the year-ago period.
