CBS swings to loss on ad weakness

CBS Corp. (CBS) said Thursday that it swung to a first-quarter loss on plunging advertising revenues at its television stations, radio stations and outdoor displays, as well as a decline in DVD sales. CBS said it lost $55.3 million, or 8 cents a share, in the latest quarter.

It posted a profit of $244 million, or 36 cents a share, in the same quarter a year ago, including a one-time benefit from the company's international self-distribution of its "CSI" drama franchise. Revenue fell 13% to $3.16 billion. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were expecting revenue of $3.26 billion

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Finally, besieged newspapers have a defender in Congress
mcclatchy

WASHINGTON -- Just hours after the final edition of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer rolled off the presses Tuesday, Sen. Patty Murray said that without newspapers serving as watchdogs no one would track local school boards, uncover scandals like Watergate or the Walter Reed Medical Center or give a voice to the vulnerable and mistreated.

"Mr. President, this is really troubling me because at the end of the day, newspapers aren't just another business," the Washington state Democrat said during a speech on the Senate floor. "And if more close and there's nothing left to replace them, our democracy will be weaker as a result."

Murray's bother, Greg Johns, was a sportswriter at the P-I before losing his job when the Hearst-owned P-I ceased publication. Johns will continue to write for the paper's Web site, which is still operating, the senator's office said.

The P-I is the second newspaper to close in recent weeks. The Rocky Mountain News in Denver folded on Feb. 27, and a number of newspapers around the nation are facing deepening financial problems as a result of the recession and competition from the Internet.

“Sen. Patty Murray said that without newspapers serving as watchdogs no one would track local school boards, uncover scandals like Watergate or the Walter Reed Medical Center or give a voice to the vulnerable and mistreated.”

What about Charlie Rangle, The Cold Cash affair, Bubba and his little girl? Oh, that’s right, those would be stories that the new media would NOT report anyway....too busy focusing on anyone with (R) after their name...

Besieged?

How are newspapers “besieged” other than by market forces (physical-print media is steadily losing ground to electronic media) and, in many papers’ cases, by the papers’ own incompetence and rank leftist bias?

How did Sen. Patty Murray skip over the Clinton scandal? It has not been all that long ago. Liberals keeping harping on Watergate as if it was yesterday. Now that I know how the liberals own the MSM, I doubt even Watergate was as huge as they made it out to be. Clinton is a letch, and he is welcomed by colleges to speak, and the so-called feminists drool at his feet. Morals and honesty mean nothing in their corrupt world.

The one reason these politicians say we need a newspaper is to track local school board meetings. That would be a waste of time, as the school board just rubber stamps the school administrations directive. They come out in full force every time they want a tax increase. The unions push, and are really the only organized group with money to advertise. In my area, the taxes are so high, young couples are moving elsewhere. Guess what? The school population dropped. Now they are in panic mode to attract more families. The board minutes are already available online. They never seem to tell you how the unions are screwing everyone. That is the information I would like to read. I don’t count on that information from a biased newspaper, that is the mouthpiece for unions.

More bad news for the Obamababoon and the Al-Quedacrats.

Nancy Pelosi knew about "torture" back in Sept'02, apparently lying about her knowledge of treatment of these terrorists (aka Obama voters).

Just an observation -- it would have been nice to find some information about the post topic SEC filing in this strand. But no. Hijacked by the idiot conservatives again. What a drag if it was the conservatives controlling MSM. We'd all have to carry barf bags.

Without newspapers, that would only leave MSNBC and HuffPo to kiss Obama's butt.

Washington spoke; Friends of America look over the Atlantic sea;
A bended bow is lifted in heaven, & a heavy iron chain
Descends link by link from Albions cliffs across the sea to bind
Brothers & sons of America, till our faces pale and yellow;
Heads deprest, voices weak, eyes downcast, hands work-bruis'd,
Feet bleeding on the sultry sands, and the furrows of the whip
Descend to generations that in future times forget.
