"Truth to Power"?... McClatchy publishes Pelosi puff piece

McClatchy reporter David Lightman has high praise for Nancy Pelosi in a puff piece entitled, Pelosi seems to be weathering Republican criticism just fine

Imagine how the McClatchy reporters would fact-check Dick Cheney or a top Republican if they made a series of contradictory statements and absurd claims like Pelosi did -- "I was told waterboarding was not being employed in interrogations" -- "I was not briefed on what was in that briefing, I was just informed" -- "The CIA lied to me and they lie to Congress all the time" -- "The Bush administration lied to me" -- "that is why we need a truth commission, to look into that"

No such fact-checking from McClatchy when it comes to Nancy Pelosi.

Update: from a reader:
"Imagine that a republican under pressure for a potential lie had announced that there would be no more conversation about that subject? I don't think that the questioning and the digging would magically end... MNI's Washington bureau has not had credibility for a long time and this is just one more shameful story among all the rest..."

Well, if you follow the buzz comments about the article, 183 out of 185 comments respectfully disagree.....well, ok, maybe not respectfully.

This story does seem heavily slanted toward Pelosi, relying more on not-that-many-people-know-about-the-story. Guess the people who are commenting in the story only watch MSNBC, listen to NPR and read HuffPo. I don't give much credibility to McClatchy's Washington reporting. It's an embarrassment.

McClatchy has no credibility as pertains to its Washington bureau and overseas reporting. It's the Fox News of the left.

When you're the boss and your party has the majority, who is going to push the issue in Congress? Pelosi could be a mass murderer and her gutless, liberal clones would look the other way.

Imagine that a republican under pressure for a potential lie had announced that there would be no more conversation about that subject? I don't think that the questioning and the digging would magically end. MNI's Washington bureau has not had credibility for a long time and this is just one more shameful story among all the rest. Why would anyone pay for a story you can read in the Daily Kos for free? Why would an advertiser associate its brand with a low credibility, partisan rag who is losing market share?

Truth to Power was always a joke. Journalists had a moment of seeming to be the fourth estate before it became obvious that are just shills for one side.

It's about time a reporter and a newspaper began pushing back against the Republican "projection" lies that have been dinned into the ears of anyone who's stupid or ignorant or narrowminded enough to listen to Fox News, or Republican talking heads in Congress.

Anyone who DOESN'T believe the CIA will lie to anyone, anytime has been living in a cave their whole life, or as I said, willfully ignorant (listens to and reads ONLY right-wing-nut information).

In fact, some of you conspiracy theorists have somehow conveniently forgotten all the times you've railed against the CIA and how sleazy their covert activities are.

Really, at what point did you decide that you hated your country?

Conservatives have a healthy mistrust of both the CIA and the Government. But we all know Pelosi is lying and MNI is helping conceal that lie.
I would be careful about calling people you don't know "stupid, ignorant, or narrow minded". It sounded a lot better to you as you typed than it reads to strangers who read it.
Your call for newspapers to "push against projections lies" belies the role of the newspaper which is not to control our opinions but to provide us with a reasonably impartial view of the what happened.
The partiality of the press is now beyond dispute by other than those who are willful in their blindness. You, by your advocacy are a case in point. Thank you.
