Readers say the Modesto Bee plans to outsource home delivery... no information yet from the Bee

A reader who happens to be a Modesto Bee "independent contractor" carrier emailed yesterday to report the Modesto Bee gave 30 day notices to their carriers, terminating their contracts at the end of June, and giving them no explanation.

In comments, an anonymous reader explains this is about the Bee's plan to outsource home delivery to an independent company in an attempt to cut delivery costs.

The people getting squeezed the most, of course, are the carriers. A reader says the carriers are being exploited:
The Modesto Bee carriers are being exploited. None of them want to be working under terrible conditions seven days a week... they have to. The Distributors know this and are trying to scare carriers into accepting a penny or two less so they can keep it. The only way for them to do so legally is to "fire" them all and re-contract them.

The carrier work force are the real back bone of the newspaper and they are the ones treated with the least respect.

As of yet, there have been no reports on this development from the Modesto Bee.

As of today, June 1st. most if not all Circulation/Distribution staff at the Sac Bee have been laid off. Sacrificing service for savings is worth it for MNI. All MNI Circulation Depts. will will follow.

I agree....I worked for The Fresno Bee circulation dept for 22 years. I took the buyout in Sept of 08. MNI does not give a rats a** about the customer or carrier and in most cases the employee to.I've been working for a new company here in Fresno for two months now and I can't believe the difference in integrity and the way the business is run from MNI.

If this is a "righty" board, I don't understand what the complaint is here?

Is capitalism not at work? Doesn't repub's want bigger business and smaller government?

To me this is your dream come true. A "leftist" organization behaving like a "righty".

The SACBEE doesn't have a circulation problem, they have a content problem. There is no business news, sports news is mostly just box scores, 25 cents for a Sunday tv guide, stories are just cut and pasted from some other source, what is written locally is so elementary and silly, but they do find all the sad sack tales in the area to write about and we get ad nauseum everything O'Bama.

....and the look of the paper has become something else, i.e., ink smeared, smugged, crinkled, wrinkled, faded and misprinted on color, weak color, weak black ink, ripped, torn and on and on.

I see nothing but great success in the future and they still run Rex Babin's gay political cartoon junk.

Great job by all. Keep slinging!!

As a "righty" I like good businesses. I like to see good investments, great profits, well cared for customers and happy employees. I am not so happy with businesses that arrogantly fire half their customers, raise prices for a worse product, disrespect their employees and despise their shareholders.
Having the government bail out bad leadership especially pisses me off.
MNI mostly serves as the poster child for the bankruptcy code. Shareholders and debtors should demand better than they got from MNI management.

If I was a carrier I would quit and let the papers just sit

If you only knew the working conditions the poor carriers work under.

The Bee treats them like chattel.
