"What a fine company I have been fired from"... laid off Charlotte Observer employee gets the runaround

Talk about your final indignity. A Charlotte Observer employee who was laid off May 29th has posted details about the aggravation he went through to get the severance check the newspaper promised him.

Here is his post:

So after 42 years of loyal service at the Charlotte Observer, my job was "eliminated" on May 29, 2009.

The "HR generalist" said my promised severance check would be mailed June 23. Monday, June 29, it had not arrived.

I called. HR generalist was nowhere to be found, "in another state". New HR VP doesn't know anything about it. Payroll doesn't know anything about it. Nobody knows anything about it.

June 30 (Tues) HR generalist calls. She has had family issues out of town. 'Nobody does these things when she's not there.' (Sound familiar?) She will process it right away. Said she would Fedex it overnight.

So, no check July 1 (Wed). I called my former supervisor at 6 PM and told him to get it straightened out. He said he would check first thing in the morning (Thursday) because HR generalist was already gone for the day.

OK, so I heard he got in about 10:00 Thurs. At noon he called me and said it was on the way, yadda, yadda, yadda.

12:15 the mailman comes with a certified letter which had to be signed for.

Great! I thought. When I opened it up, no check. Just another copy of the same paperwork I signed and already have a copy of!

So I call supervisor again. He will look into it. In a little while he calls back. They sent the paperwork certified mail. (DUH!)

They sent the check FedEx overnight, but it got down to the mailroom too late and it didn't go out Tuesday, it went out Wednesday. It will be here by 3:00 today. I told him if it wasn't here by 3 I was calling Ann Caulkins (publisher).

About 3:15 it arrived on FedEx- no signature required! I went straight to the bank.

Hope it clears.

July 13 I still haven't received the promised letter stating that my job was eliminated, so that I could tell prospective employers I wasn't fired for no reason. I call HR generalist back, and she promises to mail it right away. Wonder when that will arrive?

What a fine company I have been fired from!

42 years huh!

With MNI's far left views, I'm surprised the certified letter didn't simply ask him to be a good lib and euthanize himself to save MNI, the enviornment, rising health care costs, his party, and Pru and Melanie's bonuses.

I know our troll, must have some sage advice for this poor guy.

"Please provide proof that you are who you say you are, and make sure it's only from a reliable news source like msdnc."

What does politics have to do with this person getting the run-around from a company that doesn't care about employees?

MNI is a company, not a political mouthpiece. I believe some MNI papers actually endorsed George Bush in his 2 elections, didn't they?

Incorrect. MNI is a political mouthpiece first, foremost and to their dying breath.

You can tell because only a political mouthpiece would engage a business plan that includes alienating 50% of their potential customers.

6:12 Hey troll, give specific sources as to the Bush endorsment!

It's not getting any better at The Charlotte Observer. Building Services people are being laid-off/outsourced at the end of this month. Contractor coming in won't do half of the work these people currently do. But management says its saving money. Maybe it looks good on paper, but the idiots in their Ivory Towers don't have a lick of common sense or ability to manage the production of a paper. Most of them haven't even been in the press room. They might get dirty.

Can you tell I am still happily employeed at The Charlotte Observer?! For the moment...

"Loyalty"? You've got to be kidding. You got paid for the work you did. End of story. Be glad you got a check. Be glad you have a pension. Stop whining and move on. You no longer work for McClatchy. It didn't want you anymore. End of story.

I am not 6:12am but Google is your friend.

Presidential Race - Editorial Endorsements
Campaign 2004

I am not familiar with all 80 or so papers that MNI owns (I thought I heard 30 dailies, and 50 non-dailies), but I do see the Wichita Eagle on there which is an MNI paper.

...Wichita Eagle on there which is an MNI paper.

But was the Wichita Eagle a McClatchy property at the time? Not that it matters. One or two endorsements of anything other than the official company candidate doesn't an objective "news" organization make.

In fact, it is beyond lame to make the attempt to even portray MNI as anything approaching objective.

I am not going to take the time to compare the map with owned papers, but if you look at this map, it appears that most if not all of the papers that endorsed Obama from MNI were in Democratic controlled counties...thus indicating they were just pandering to their constituents.

Back to the topic.

Once you leave your considered persona non grata. They look at you as a "traitor". HR will be of little help,no return calls, no return e-mails. It has been the same with most others that have been let go.

If you think that is bad just wait until you have to deal with Zenith.

Good luck.

To 8:17 ...

You've got it backward. Post the breakdown in the 2004 election, not 2008. Voters were duped by the left-wing media in 2008.

And don't forget, most newspapers are located in major cities, where democrats have a socialist advantage. But their readership extends into rural areas.

How about this for a thought..first of all the HR generalist is only 1 person doing all the layoff processing but if it makes you feel better to blame someone for your misery- that's fine. this is what happens when companys downsize to a point where there is no help..be glad you got a check and move on. Can imagine what you were expecting- maybe hand delivered to your front door??

Poor guy works 42 years for the same company, is at least in his 60's, maybe older, gets laid off, and what kind of sympathy does he get from some left wing MNI POS?

All you people who must inject politics into every single thing that happens to you every second of every day - you have small penises and you're probably short.

Get over yourselves.

Really. What about that "whine whine" diatribe sounded like a left winger? Nada.

Hey "Still working In This Dump..."
How long have you been there? I would hardly generalize everyone with longevity (before the ax fell) as "useless hangers on". I know the classified dept. couldn't function without the able, knowledgeable oversight of a certain IT tech.
