What to do while you are on forced vacation. Add:

7. Call the White house. Thank Obama for the great economy you are participating in.

8. Buy a copy of the SACBEE and try to read it as an objective reader would. Maybe you will understand why you are on forced vacation.

Hang with your Family......
Working at the paper for 16 years I didn't realize how much I had been missing ; after being let go because of bad decisions from Gary Pruitt and the BOD's . First working nights I missed dinner and being able to hang out with the family 5 nights a week. Weekends, well working Friday and Saturday nights till 5-6 am kind of put a damper on activities.

Since I've been out of work we have been having a blast.
Short live the papers !

I second that. BTW if you haven't looked into retraining, do so ASAP. There is a 16 week window (in Calif. anyway) from your release date to opt for retraining. I am learning things I have wanted to learn for a long while, AND learning a new trade and really enjoying it.

Free at last; Free at last; thank God I'm free at last.

For all those...but I owe my soul to da company store...people: There really is a life after McClatchy, and just like Dorthy and Toto, it is in COLOR...not just the black and white of newsprint! It really isn't that hard to take that step into the unknown. Oh sure it is hard at first, but then you will see opportunities you never thought were out there. Best wishes to the next round of pink slip recipients.

In addition to the suggestions in the original post, make sure to get you annual appointments with your doctor, dentist, and optometrist while you still have insurance.

Also, update your wardrobe with some clothes suitable for job interviews while you still have income.
