Newspaper slump deepens as 2Q ad sales fall 29 pct (AP)

Newspapers' financial woes worsened in the second quarter as advertising sales shrank by 29 percent, leaving publishers with $2.8 billion less revenue than they had at the same time last year.

It's the deepest downturn yet during a three-year free fall in advertising revenue — newspapers' main source of income. The magnitude of the industry's advertising losses have intensified in each of the last 12 quarters.

The numbers released Thursday by the Newspaper Association of America weren't a shock, given the dramatic erosion mirrored the advertising losses that the largest U.S. newspaper publishers already had reported for the April-June period.

Still, the statistics served as a stark reminder of the crisis facing newspapers as they try to cope with a brutal recession and advertising trends that have shifted more marketing dollars to the Internet.

"This data represents a rearview-mirror perspective on what we all know was a terrible stretch of bad road," said John Sturm, chief executive for the newspaper association that serves as the industry's largest trade group.

The latest turbulence left U.S. newspapers with ad sales of $6.8 billion in this year's second quarter compared to $9.6 billion last year.

Through the first half of the year, newspaper ad revenue plunged 29 percent to $13.4 billion.

Some newspaper industry executives are hoping the slide bottomed out in the second quarter. That optimism is largely grounded in the belief that recession will end soon — if it hasn't already — and encourage advertisers to loosen their pursestrings, particularly toward the end of the year as they try to persuade consumers to spend more in the holiday shopping season.

"When the economy begins its recovery, advertisers will return to spending, and newspapers will find themselves well positioned to harness the strength of their platforms to build a brighter future."

I doubt it. It will never be the same. Biased McClatchy reporting caused peoples' habits to change independent of the economy, and migrate to the internet.

Printing The NYT Costs Twice As Much As Sending Every Subscriber A Free Kindle (businessinsider.com)

Not that it's anything we think the New York Times Company should do, but we thought it was worth pointing out that it costs the Times about twice as much money to print and deliver the newspaper over a year as it would cost to send each of its subscribers a brand new Amazon Kindle instead.

Hoover's pro-labor stance helped cause Great Depression, UCLA economist says(Remind you of anyone?)

Pro-labor policies pushed by President Herbert Hoover after the stock market crash of 1929 accounted for close to two-thirds of the drop in the nation's gross domestic product over the two years that followed, causing what might otherwise have been a bad recession to slip into the Great Depression, a UCLA economist concludes in a new study.

"These findings suggest that the recession was three times worse — at a minimum — than it would otherwise have been, because of Hoover," said Lee E. Ohanian, a UCLA professor of economics.

Key Democrat suggests party moderates 'brain dead' (Townhall.com)

A key House liberal suggested Thursday that party moderates who've pushed for changes in health care legislation are "brain dead" and out for insurance company campaign donations.

Moderate Blue Dog Democrats "just want to cause trouble," said Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif., who heads the health subcommittee on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee.

"They're for the most part, I hate to say brain dead, but they're just looking to raise money from insurance companies and promote a right-wing agenda that is not really very useful in this whole process," Stark told reporters on a conference call.

Tacoma Production Moves To San Antonio Toyota Plant (WOAI Radio)

Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Texas announced Thursday night that Toyota is relocating its Tacoma mid sized pickup truck production from Fremont California to San Antonio, and is expected to make a $100 million investment in the plant on the city's south side, 1200 WOAI news reports.

"Here in Texas, the addition of the Tacoma to the Tundra production line will better utilize our plant's capacity and the 21 supplier facilities on our site," TMMTX President Kenji Fukuta said.

"This will require new jobs at our plant to handle the additional production, and on-site suppliers will also be adding new jobs, but it is too soon to give an estimate."

Few tickets sold for Clinton CNE speech (The Globe and Mail)

Ticket sales for Bill Clinton's speech Saturday at the CNE have been much slower than expected, forcing organizers to reconfigure the stadium layout and offer fairgoers $5 tickets at the door.

About 7,000 advance tickets are sold for the 4 p.m. event, a far cry from the 25,000 people expected when it was announced two weeks ago.

Move to impeach Sanford under way
(The Washington Times)

South Carolina Republican lawmakers are on the verge of calling a special legislative session that could impeach and remove embattled GOP Gov. Mark Sanford by the end of the year, The Washington Times has learned.

Simple remedy: Sanford changes parties and becomes a Democrat.

He's then eligible to join the Democrat Wall of Fame with Bill Clinton, Teddy Kennedy, Barney Frank etc.

Are Pelosi's lies impeachable?
(American Thinker)

Nancy Pelosi is a liar. And not just the typical, sniveling, inside-the-Beltway-talking-head prevaricator, either.

Nancy Pelosi is a wide-eyed, stare-you-in-the-face, What-planet-are-you-from? liar.

Proof is provided in Thursday's Wall Street Journal. Rather than just regurgitating Democrat talking points - -Why is it I always have the feeling that Rahm Emmanuel is barking questions into Chris Matthews IFB? -- about recently released documents on the CIA's use of enhanced interrogation techniques (EITs), the WSJ actually read the reports.

Their conclusion?

Whoever advised people to be skeptical of what they read in the papers must have had in mind this week's coverage of the documents about CIA interrogations. Now that we've had a chance to read the reports, it's clear the real story isn't the few cases of abuse played up by the media.

The news is that the program was thoughtfully developed, carefully circumscribed, briefed to Congress, and yielded information crucial to disrupting al Qaeda.

Cuban retirees resell news as toilet paper (UPI)

HAVANA, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A Cuban retiree says the country’s toilet paper shortage has created a lucrative business for seniors -- buying and reselling newspapers as an alternative.

The Havana retiree said he and other seniors line up before dawn to buy surplus newspapers from distribution points for factories and offices that have closed for economic reasons and shortages of electricity and raw materials, The Miami Herald reported Thursday.

One of his (Ted Kennedy)
favorite topics of humor was Chappaquiddick" (The National Review)

Jules Crittenden mentioned on his blog he heard Ed Klein, former foreign editor of Newsweek and editor-in-chief of The New York Times Magazine, recalling on air that Ted Kennedy liked to joke about Chappaquiddick.

(A link to the audio in WMA format, relevant portion starts at about 30:15):

I don't know if you know this or not, but one of his favorite topics of humor was indeed Chappaquiddick itself.

And he would ask people, "have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick?"

That is just the most amazing thing. It's not that he didn't feel remorse about the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, but that he still always saw the other side of everything and the ridiculous side of things, too.

The $10 trillion deficit disaster-America was out of money a long time ago (washingtontimes.com)

"At what point do we run out of money?" President Obama was asked in May. "Well, we are out of money now," he replied.

That was when he projected the deficit to be $7 trillion over the next 10 years. Now his administration admits the number likely will reach $9 trillion.

We sure are out of money -- and the true deficit number probably is at least another $1 trillion bigger.

Nearly 600 people came to Medford's Abraham Lincoln Elementary School today to hear Sen. Ron Wyden talk about health-care reform in a town-hall meeting.

Questions from the spirited crowd reflected the range of issues in the national debate about how to make health care affordable and available.

The Oregon Democrat said everyone will have to give up something in the effort, which he noted has been a work in progress since Harry Truman was president.

Fox News beats CNN and MSNBC with more limited Kennedy coverage
(LA Times)

Fox News maintained its top ranking among the cable news channels Wednesday as its competitors turned most of their coverage over to the death of Sen. Edward Kennedy.

The event didn't prove to be a major draw for viewers, however. Fox, which covered the story in a more limited fashion, drew an average of 1.37 million viewers throughout the entire day and 2.67 million viewers during prime time, according to Nielsen Media Research.

CNN, which usually dominates during major breaking news events, averaged 711,000 viewers overall and 1.19 million viewers in prime time. MSNBC pulled in 506,000 viewers throughout the day and 984,000 in prime time.

In the key 25- to 54-year-old advertising demographic, Fox had double the audience of its competitors in prime time, averaging 736,000 viewers.

AMA blasts RNC's health claim

The American Medical Association is the latest group to blast a Republican National Committee mailing that suggested the Obama administration would "ration" health care to discriminate against Republicans based on voter registration records.

The AMA put out the following statement late Thursday [h/t Brian Beutler]:

"Patients should rest assured that the health care legislation under consideration in the House does not ration medical care or discriminate based on political affiliation. The fact is that the House bill will expand coverage and prohibit denials for coverage based on pre-existing medical conditions. The AMA is working for all Americans to have affordable, quality health coverage so they can get the care they need."

The assertion, which appeared in a questionnaire approved by RNC Chairman Michael Steele, is false.

But the RNC, so far, has only conceded that it was "inartfully worded."

Westchester (Journal-News, Weschster, NY) biz news staff gone (Talking Biz News)

The entire business news staff at The Journal News in Westchester County, New York, a Gannett newspaper, is gone this week in the round of 50 cutbacks at the paper.

These include business editor Mike Bieger and reporters Julie Moran Alterio, Jerry Gleeson and Jay Loomis. The former business editor, who was most recently data desk editor, Frank Brill, was also laid off. Brill is a former board member of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

The move calls into question whether eliminating coverage of business news in the worst recession in two decades is a good idea.

There is no one left in a department that once had 14 people: a top editor, an assistant editor, three copy editors/page designers, eight reporters and one editorial assistant. Last December, business reporter David Schepp was also laid off. He covered workplace, business of health and Rockland County

This staff covered such locally based corporations as: PepsiCo, IBM, MasterCard, Reader’s Digest, MBIA, Dress Barn, Bunge, Jarden, Starwood Hotels & Resorts and many other smaller ones.

The staff also covered small business, the economy and consumer issues in an area with a population of 1.3 million people just north of the world financial center of New York City.

Star Tribune tries to cut octogenarian loose in bankruptcy
(Minnpost.com)

The Star Tribune is using Chapter 11 to sever ties with 87-year-old Lou Gelfand, the paper’s long-time ombudsman who became a twice-monthly business ethics columnist after settling a 2005 age discrimination claim.

The Tuesday filing states Gelfand's contract runs through December 2010. The paper seeks to end the deal in September, 15 months early, as part of its financial reorganization. A compensation amount is not listed.

The Strib has not published Gelfand's column in print or online since January. The settlement's confidentiality clause puts a lid on details. However, Gelfand's attorney, Megan Brennan, says to her knowledge, her client still completes assignments.

A judge has not yet ruled on the Strib's request, which Gelfand can challenge. Brennan says her firm is “aware of the filing and we are reviewing it.”

Big Beck: Goes over 3 million viewers, Cable News Ratings for Wednesday, August 26, 2009
(TV by the Numbers)

Though a little scandal might alienate advertisers, it’s pure ratings gold. Last night Glenn Beck had over 3 million viewers at 5pm, second only to O’Reilly for the night.

But, Beck had more 25-54 viewers than O’Reilly (888K to 876K). I don’t watch or really even care about the cable news wars, but still…wow. Even though Beck airs before primetime, when there are fewer people watching TV, he had the most 25-54 viewers in the cable news world for the night.

New Republic Speculates Patrick Kennedy Could Grow Into Great Political Leader (NewsBusters)

When one first looks at this article in The New Republic speculating about if Ted Kennedy's son, Patrick Kennedy, could grow into a great political leader, you wouldn't be blamed for thinking it was a satirical story written by either Scott Ott or some other humor columnist.

However the name of the author is Jason Zengerle and he is being dead serious which actually makes it funnier than any intentionally satirical story could be. What makes Zengerle's article especially funny is that he provides absolutely no proof that Patrick Kennedy displays the slightest bit of political leadership.

In fact, Zengerle lays out reasons why Patrick Kennedy, who is in and out of rehab, has dismal political abilities but somehow concludes he could grow into greatness:

Of all the politicians I’ve encountered in the course of doing my job, there have been some that I’ve admired and some that I’ve loathed.

But there’s only one politician I’ve ever pitied, and that’s Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy.

Politics at the DOJ PATTERICO

Obama’s Justice Department doesn’t seem to have any problem clearing Obama supporters accused of wrongdoing.

First it was the Philadelphia poll watchers case, a case the Obama DOJ had already won but still dismissed.

Now the DOJ has reportedly killed a year-long criminal investigation into pay-for-play involving NM Governor Bill Richardson and a large Democratic donor:

“The decision not to pursue indictments was made by top Justice Department officials, according to a person familiar with the investigation, who asked not to be identified because federal officials had not disclosed results of the probe.

“It’s over. There’s nothing. It was killed in Washington,” the person told The Associated Press.”

Nothing to see here. Move along.

"The Union Thug Kneecapping Act of 2009"

Union Disappointment: A "No" on Card Checks (Kiplinger Business Resource Center)

Congress will likely deal unions a disappointment on labor law reform this year. Prospects are dimming for a vote in the Senate on legislation that would allow labor groups to organize via card signing campaign instead of a vote.

The House of Representatives has not yet approved the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) but is expected to do so this session. The holdup is in the Senate.

Although talks to craft a compromise, led by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), continue behind the scenes, more-urgent legislation is threatening to push consideration of any compromise into next year.

Health care reform is now expected to consume a good part of the fall, along with cap and trade legislation, financial services reform and spending bills. Progress is also hindered by the recent death of Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and the continued absence of his pro-labor ally, Robert Byrd (D-WV), who is in ill health.

Advertisers 'Glenn Beck' Newspapers
By Mithridate Ombud

While the media focuses on the tens of advertisers that left Glenn Beck, another segment of the public has spoken out of their wallet.

Newspapers, who have spoon fed the progressive movement to the United States for the last several decades will now have to do with $2.8 BILLION DOLLARS less than they took in at this time last year.

That's a quarterly result.

Newspapers will blame the Internet but if there were any value in the product advertisers would be there.

The people have spoken and if newspapers don't want to ask the hard questions we don't want the product. Online or off.

Toyota moving Tacoma production to San Antonio(from California)
San Antonio Express News

FREMONT, Calif. — Toyota Motor Corp. officially confirmed Thursday that it will relocate production of the Tacoma pickup from a (unionized) plant in Northern California to its state-of-the-art (non-unionized) manufacturing facility in San Antonio by next summer.

snip

San Antonio and Bexar County officials estimate 100,000 Tacomas, about 50,000 less than NUMMI is capable of producing at peak capacity, will be pumped out annually following a $100 million retooling at Toyota's San Antonio campus.

snip

But in California, the move amounts to a supreme body blow to a state already reeling from financial and economic woes.

Thousands of production workers, each of whom earn about $65,000 annually at the West Coast's lone auto plant, stand to lose their jobs and a network of more than 1,100 California-based suppliers that employ tens of thousands of workers will be affected.

California officials estimate those suppliers employ about 18,800workers who add a total of $904 million annually to the state's payroll.

Employees at the California plant weren't notified until Thursday afternoon at a “state of the company” meeting.

GM’s Epic Fail on eBay
(Car Dealer Reviews)

All the analysts warned GM about emphasizing GM branding before creating and marketing great products. Turns out Obama’s first big GM marketing push with eBay is an epic failure.

The pilot GM eBay program, currently being tested at 225 California dealerships, has not generated substantial sales to the disappointment of GM executives.

GM dealers have posted 16,000 new vehicle listings, but sold only 45 vehicles through the ‘click & drive’ promotion. And while the first four listings are free, eBay charges $20.00 per vehicle for an eBay motors insertion fee–or in GM’s case, $360,000.00–which does not include the successful listing fee changed after a complete transaction.

In any case, it is safe to say GM lost a lot of money with their test run in the auction space.

The documents also show the embattled chairman of the Ways and Means Committee -- who is being probed by the House Ethics Committee -- failed to reveal a staggering $3 million in various business transactions over the same period.

This week, Rangel filed drastically revised financial-disclosure forms reflecting new, higher amounts of outside income and numerous additional business deals that had not been reported when the reports were originally filed.

Till Debt Does Its Part

So new budget projections show a cumulative deficit of $9 trillion over the next decade. According to many commentators, that’s a terrifying number, requiring drastic action — in particular, of course, canceling efforts to boost the economy and calling off health care reform.

The truth is more complicated and less frightening. Right now deficits are actually helping the economy. In fact, deficits here and in other major economies saved the world from a much deeper slump. The longer-term outlook is worrying, but it’s not catastrophic.

The only real reason for concern is political. The United States can deal with its debts if politicians of both parties are, in the end, willing to show at least a bit of maturity. Need I say more?

Let’s start with the effects of this year’s deficit.

There are two main reasons for the surge in red ink. First, the recession has led both to a sharp drop in tax receipts and to increased spending on unemployment insurance and other safety-net programs. Second, there have been large outlays on financial rescues. These are counted as part of the deficit, although the government is acquiring assets in the process and will eventually get at least part of its money back.

What this tells us is that right now it’s good to run a deficit. Consider what would have happened if the U.S. government and its counterparts around the world had tried to balance their budgets as they did in the early 1930s. It’s a scary thought. If governments had raised taxes or slashed spending in the face of the slump, if they had refused to rescue distressed financial institutions, we could all too easily have seen a full replay of the Great Depression.

"I always wonder if you tinkerbells wake up one day and say to yourself, self, today I am going to become a lying piece of shit."

The behavior of liberals is governed by their virulent hatred of anyone who disagrees with them.
This allows them to justify lying, stealing, even violence, because they believe it serves the "greater good".
How sad.
