Is the New York Times eyeing the Sacramento Bee's market?

A reader tells me he went to a cultural fair in Sacramento over the weekend and something caught his eye.

About 20 organizations and businesses had booths. One booth was sponsored by the New York Times. Their offer: a reduced subscription price -- and a free NYT t-shirt.

Looks like the New York Times might be trying to make inroads into the Bee's market. (Has anybody seen other evidence the NYT is going after the Bee or any other papers?)

Update: a reader says the NYT has done the same thing in Charlotte.

They've been trying to encroach on local markets for the past couple of years in hope of becoming a national outlet. All they do is waste their money and pick up a few nutball leftists here and there.

Not even the KC Star is worried about them.

They had a booth set up at an event in downtown Charlotte. "A Taste of Charlotte". I even made a comment about their location. It was right smack in the middle of the event and the Charlotte Observer was in a poor location. They offered a reduced subscription and a free T-shirt. Guess they're making their rounds.

Like some of our friends, we recently subscribed to the Wall Street Journal. Not much of interest to read in the Sacramento Bee. The NY Times is too liberal.

There's plenty of libs in California for the NY Times. The large, coastal cities are lib stronghold, which is why the economy has collapsed and welfare programs are rampant. Gee, ya think there's a connection?

Ask people in Oregon why their state economy has gone to hell, and they will tell you because of all the people that have moved there from California. They bluntly say the liberals ruin California, so they moved out, and now they are doing the same insane things in their new state that ruined CA. No hope, there is no hope for the NW. The bailout need will be forever.

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE NY TIMES AND THE BEE, BUT THEY SEEM TO BE FIGHTING OVER THE SCRAPS.

Guardian Media Admits The Observer May Be Closed (London Times)

Carolyn McCall, the chief executive of the company that owns The Observer, conceded yesterday that a closure of the world’s oldest Sunday newspaper was being actively considered as a solution to its mounting losses.

In a memo sent to all staff Ms McCall, who runs the Guardian Media Group, said that all options were under consideration as the company tries to cut losses that totalled just short of £90 million last year.

She said Guardian Media Group, which also owns The Guardian newspaper, was grappling with both the recession and “structural change” as advertising migrates online. Forecasting that advertising would not bounce back, she said that GMG would inevitably “be a smaller organisation”.

Could it be that the Muslims (Illegals) don’t read English (American) newspapers and the products of the British educational system (American Teachers Union) are semi-literate at best!

The Sac Bee delivers the NYT's. The Bee has had the contract to deliver in the area for years. Bee carriers deliver the NYT, IBD, Wall Street.

There is no way the NYT's could have their own carrier work force to deliver the few thousand customers they have in Sacramento.

I recently dropped the Bee and at the publishers suggestion, decided to subscribe to the WSJ. I am more than satisfied with the move.

Investors Business Daily offers a free 2 week subscription which I took advantage of.

Today I shall pay for that too. Detailed stories in both that give the reader enough information to make rational and intelligent decisions about politics, foreign relations and the real world!

If Bee carriers deliver those two, they must be doing it at a different time. I get those at 4:00 am and the Bee came at 5:30.

Just checked in to make sure all the McClatchy unemployed haters are still here. Yep, I' ll go back to work now collecting my paycheck. Seems once all the deadwood got cut loose we can now make money.

Go at it. Back to work now.

They have been in our small local market for three years now. We get paid to deliver their paper too. I guess we are trying to get it where we can, money that is. We are already screwed...

Hey 6:49 the people in Oregon need only to look in the mirror if they want to see who's to blame. I could never figure out what the fantasy was/is for the small percentage of Californicaters that moved to the NW.
