The Kansas City Star is seeking candidates for the position of web designer. The successful candidate will work with newsroom managers, editors and end users to conceptualize, plan and design on-line products. Projects will vary widely from modifying existing websites to building complex new websites.
Job Responsibilities Include:
- develop new web applications for news division through packaged and customized applications
- create company-wide Intranet with data manipulation by individual staff members
- maintain/enhance existing web applications with internal systems integration
- test web applications and conduct user testing/results
- design/implement user-driven templates, databases, interfaces
- develop database-driven web interfaces for rapid, real-time information sharing
- develop external web portals for user to input/retrieve accurate information
- be a team player teaching, learning, and participating in setting priorities
Job Requirements:
- bachelors degree in computer science or MIS or equivalent education and experience
- 5+ years of user-interface and interactive design experience
- minimum 3 years ColdFusion experience
- superior skills in ColdFusion 7+ and SQL
- strong skills in Object Oriented ColdFushion Development and Microsoft SQL server 2005
- ability to rapidly design mockups using Photoshop/Illustrator/Fireworks
- ability to hand code XHTML/CSS/JS
- working knowledge of Jquery library; Flash design, animation and code; Drupal development
- excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to teach non-technical users
- experience in structured environment with strong attention to detail
- ability to work additional hours as needed and work summer weekends

Didn't these people fire their Web developer? I am pretty sure they did. Maybe he can reapply. After all, he spent most of his time recycling stories and the phony polls for fearless leader.

But what is strange is that they are looking for a "Web Designer", yet this posting "reeks" of "Web Developer".
Not to mention I am 99.9% sure that we do not currently and will never use Cold Fusion. I am 99.9% sure that we use PHP & MySQL.
My guess is that someone really f'd up this posting. Oh well...guess it is par for the course right?

Ummmmm...can you be a little more specific? Like, he did this and that etc?
They did let go last year one or two of their web editors, and also let go someone that did random odd end things for various departments, but as far as I know they have only had one true developer for the last several years (after the previous ownership removed them all) and he is still here.
All I really remember about him was he was a little black guy that didn't know how to iron a shirt. I could be wrong but I don't think he was caught up in the mass firings. He might have been an after thought. Maybe he was an editor.
Sometime last year, the assistant managing editor for multimedia or something like that was laid off. Maybe that's who you're thinking?
The Star is the last major site standing without a McClatchy makeover. Good or bad. Discuss.

Their agenda driven content, editorial on the front page and advertising disguised as news, combined with their policy of corrects on the fly without acknowledgment rendered them an unreliable source of information.
