Report: McClatchy not happy with outsourced ad production centers

Maybe outsourcing isn't all it's cracked up to be. This item was posted in a forum at Gannettoid:

Gannett’s largest competitor, McClatchy, is said to be unhappy with its current offshore arrangement with an outsourcing firm. McClatchy appears to be seriously considering bringing its outsourced work back to the U.S.

We're told no decisions have been made, but an internal task force has been set up by McClatchy to examine the feasibility of such a move. McClatchy owns 30 daily newspapers in 29 markets, including The Miami Herald, The Kansas City Star, The Charlotte Observer, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Sacramento Bee. McClatchy is based in Sacramento, Calif.

Also, Lee Enterprises is said to be considering a move somewhere between the approaches by Gannett and McClatchy, where the media company is still exploring its options. Lee, like its competitors, is trying to reduce costs in order to maintain profitability...

Yep, it worked real well...Chevy car ads with pictures of Fords etc. They make up pages in Punjabi States and electronically send them back here for our AD guys to check then make the corrections HERE.

This has not been helpful to the ad sales staff members, either. They are supposed to be all about customer service, but then, their clients' ads have to be outsourced to parts of Asia just to be designed.

Except the spec artists (thankfully) stay at the paper so as to "attract" local businesses. But once the prospective client signs up to advertise, their ads are often sent overseas.

Wonderful customer service, isn't it?

Just like their Pali terrorist buddies that their international bureau always shills for, "McClatchy never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity"

It doesn't matter if it is working good.... Did it lower cost?? Will Gary Pruitt get his HUGE payroll and Bonus again, with the BOD get their big salaries?? Yes.

Hasn't been working for over 2 years at FWST but nobody listens. Lost a lot of good ad designers when outsourcing happened. Who do they think they are going to hire if they bring the tasks back. Crap on me once, shame on you. Crap on me twice,.......... Don't think there is a long line of former employees waiting to receive MNI crap again.

If NEW naming conventions are not assigned to new cars, real esate photos, etc., the original photos will be pulled from Xpance and be incorrect and will show up on the proofs. This process was applied at the paper I worked for and it worked.

Luckily some of the papers still had artists to design spec ads - the paper I was at did not have any artists left and India did some awesome ads for us - and their spec ads did generate revenue.

India is employed by us and we also worked with them. We had a lot of learning processes to overcome - both from our standpoint and also from India's standpoint - and as Ad Traffic Coordinator (with a staff of two under me) I made sure we all worked together and communicated on how to make this process work.

All the papers involved with India had weekly phone meetings on how and what we can do to make the process work - and it is now obvious that not too many papers listened during this process.

The processes that we put into action were easy for the reps to understand, India to understand and a very streamlined operation that made the system work.

So I guess that is why I was laid off - for streamlining an operation that would fall into the hands of a lot more people that did not work in my department when I was there!
