'Milwaukee Journal Sentinel' Cuts 92 Jobs, 6.2% of Workforce (Editor and Publisher)

NEW YORK The parent company of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel announced Tuesday it will reduce its workforce by 92 employees, or 6.2%, due to declining advertising revenue.

The reductions include 37 voluntary buyouts in the Journal Sentinel newsroom announced last week. Most of those departing are expected to leave the company this month, a story on the paper's Web site stated.

"The advertising recession continues to affect our business," Steven J. Smith, chairman and chief executive officer of Journal Communications Inc., the paper's owner, said in a statement. "While these changes are difficult, we must be diligent about reducing our expense platform in order to preserve the overall strength of the Journal Sentinel through and beyond this challenging time."

Declaring Print News 'Dead,' Publisher Shutters Biz Papers
(E&P Staff)

CHICAGO In a farewell print column, Publisher Joe Kennedy declared print news "dead," and said he is ceasing publication of his Bellevue, Wash., weeklies, the Bellevue Business Journal and Eastside Business.

Instead, the enterprise will focus on reaching readers and advertisers online and through social media, Kennedy said.

"It's no secret that the print news industry has been hurting for some time," Kennedy wrote, "but with the amazing and exciting evolution of social media, it has become all but irrelevant. We have reached many, many more people online with our news sites than through the print papers for the past couple of years.

It is about time that we focus all of our resources reaching the majority of readers online and where they want to be engaged."

Six Months In, Media Still Do PR For Obama IBD

After six months in office, the national media are still telling us how popular President Obama is.
That's the national media's spin.
The facts tell a different story.

While the national media eagerly touted the president's approval rating when it was higher, most news outlets have ignored the president's recent slide.

According to the USA Today-Gallup poll, more people disapprove than approve of the way the president is handling the economy, taxes, health care and the federal budget deficit.

And Americans have come to this conclusion despite the fact that the national media mostly have given the president a free pass on the issues. For example:

• The national media seldom mention that the president's budget would double the national debt in five years and triple it in 10.

• The media neglect to tell the American people that the president's cap-and-trade energy plan will cost families hundreds of dollars every year.

• The media rarely hold the Obama administration accountable for job losses, even as unemployment hit 9.5% — the highest rate in 26 years.

• Most recently, the national media have failed to fairly present both sides of the health care debate.

Tax The Wealth Of Joe Kennedy, Not Income Of Joe The Plumber (IBD)

Presidential candidate Obama to Joe the Plumber: "I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody" (Ohio, 2008).

Vice presidential candidate Joe Biden, noting that wealthier Americans would indeed pay more taxes: "It's time to be patriotic . . . time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut" (September 2008, "Good Morning America").

Under current government estimates, the cost of just three new proposed programs will call for substantial "spreading around" and much "patriotism."

The enacted Obama stimulus legislation will cost in excess of $1,000 billion ($1 trillion — $1,000,000,000,000.00); the House-passed cap-and-trade bill, another $1,000 billion over 10 years; and the proposed health care reform (the Senate version of which bears the name of Ted Kennedy), $1,000 billion over 10 years, per the Congressional Budget Office.

(We prefer the usage "thousand billion" as opposed to "trillion" to render the figures less incomprehensible.)

In view of the proven government propensity to underestimate the cost of its programs before their enactment (Medicare, for example, which from a pre-enactment projected cost of $12 billion annually by 1990 actually exceeded $100 billion in 1990, and now is far in excess of that amount), it is safe to proceed on the basis that the actual cost of cap-and-trade and health care reform will at least quintuple over their years of operation — to an amount in excess of $10,000 billion-$20,000 billion.

IRAQ: Killer of prominent TV journalist confesses (Babylon & Beyond)

A member of an extremist Sunni group has confessed to the 2006 rape and murder of prominent Iraqi TV reporter Atwar Bahjat, whose brutal death at the height of the sectarian violence shocked even battle-scarred Iraqis.

Suspect Yasser al-Takhi described how he and three others abducted and killed Bahjat and her two-man crew, Adnan Abdullah and Khaled Mohsen, in the central Iraqi town of Samarra. His two brothers also confessed to killing Abdullah and Mohsen.

Her bravery as a journalist at a time when few reporters dared move around touched hearts across Iraq and her death turned her into a national heroine.

Takhi said that the group drove the news team to a side street where he raped and shot Bahjat. His brothers killed Abdullah and Mohsen.

"We parked beside the main street. I asked the girl to step out and I told her, 'You are pretty and I like you, and I want to have sex with you,'" he said, according to a translation of the video by Agence France Presse. When Bahjat refused, "I put the pistol to her head and I raped her…. Then, I finished, took her and killed her."

This site is hilarious. It tracks Obama’s gaffes. What a liar Obama is! Read one of them:

“Remember this:
"The biggest problems that we're facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all. And that's what I intend to reverse when I'm president of the United States."

‘jOker’: When the Left’s Scared They Scream ‘Racist’ (big hollywood)

Naturally those who enjoyed (and created) all the “art” and pop culture used to demonize and dehumanize George W. Bush (whoops!) are now crying “racism” with the turning of the tables. They’re worried, and this hollow cry is all they got because who knows better the power of this kind of imagery than those who have been using it for decades to further their goals of enslaving entire populations under the cruel yoke of Big Government.

Yesterday, when the “L.A. Weekly” went all crybaby over the Obama-Joker poster, they must have known that they themselves had published a cover portraying Bush as a blood-thirsty vampire. But all’s fair in love and war and this is ideological war where hypocrisy is a weapon, not something to be ashamed of.

The Left wants Obama-Joker nipped in the bud, and their goal is to stigmatize it as something racist before it shows up on t-shirts all over the country — before it catches fire.

Feds Prepare Inquiry Into Endangered News Business (The Wrap)

The federal government is preparing an inquiry into the endangered field of news and reporting -- and Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz is dropping some broad hints about what will be in it.

In an exclusive interview with TheWrap, Leibowitz expressed some sympathy to easing antitrust enforcement of media consolidations to prevent more newspapers from folding or further declines in TV news staffs.

He also said the FTC intends not just throw out a lifeline. He wants to ensure that media companies are doing a good enough job finding alternative revenues.

Deputy accused of sexual abuse was fighter for gay rights (gay cop targeted immigrants)sun-sentinel.com

FORT LAUDERDALE - To the South Florida gay community, Jonathan Bleiweiss was a pioneering, openly gay Broward sheriff's deputy who fought discrimination within that agency earlier in his career.

But court documents released Tuesday portray Bleiweiss, 29, as a manipulative sex offender who preyed on illegal immigrants too scared to contact authorities. He would act like a jilted lover when the men would not return his calls or text messages, according to those records, based on victims' accounts.

Bleiweiss, arrested Monday, faces 14 charges, among them three counts of sexual battery by a person in authority, four counts of battery and one count of stalking. He's accused of intimidating at least eight men in his Oakland Park patrol district into performing sex acts with him during traffic stops.

"This is not an act that necessarily impacts the gay community," said Michael Rajner, a local gay rights activist who lives in Pompano Beach. "This is an act of an individual, not a community."

Cronkite blunder a revealing look inside New York Times (LA Times)

I have to admit it would be fun to join the rollicking beat-down of the New York Times and Alessandra Stanley that has followed the chief television critic's egregiously error-ridden tribute to Walter Cronkite.

Wasn't the public fascinated, after all, to learn that Stanley and the nation's Paper of Record managed eight mistakes in an almost 1,200-word tribute to Uncle Walter? Didn't many in the news game enjoy a moment of schadenfreude, seeing such a tart critic of shoddy TV journalism with her own flank exposed?

But sweet payback has more to do with emotion than reason.

In fact, the botched Cronkite appreciation and the brutally frank corrective actions (including last Sunday's scathing deconstruction by the paper's public editor) expose both a chronic weakness and a persistent strength inside the New York Times, America's most important journalistic institution.

The Times has a bad habit, revealed by the Stanley critique and in recent years by the Jayson Blair and Judith Miller incidents, of letting a few well-connected journalists run amok. At the same time, the Times has shown the strength to subject itself to a level of self scrutiny that some (in a Web Age when corrections of grievous errors come labeled as "updates") would not even pretend.

Instead of doing the usual cut and paste jobs that are clearly anti-Obama, I'd like to actually have an adult conversation with many of you because despite the fact that we are miles apart in pretty much everything, I am hoping that there are still some fundamental principals that we can agree on. At least I hope.

As I enjoy my morning coffee I am watching 2 U.S. journalists walk off a plane after being held "hostage" for a few months in N. Korea. Past President Clinton, among others, Republicans I'm sure, worked to get them freed. Great job to all involved.

Former ambassador Bolton gets on TV and pretty much blasts their efforts and say that this move just gives N. Korea more credibility.

Seriously? Obama has said many dumb things (and I voted for him) but I have to say that this Bolton clown should just stfu. Do republicans hate the democrats so much that they can't even put aside politics for 30 seconds to celebrate a victory?

I'd like to hear thoughs from the "other side". Thanks and enjoy your days.

I want to see the total bill to taxpayers for the release of the 2 U.S. journalists, who should not have been in China in the first place. That would be the news of interest. They knew what they were doing, they took the chance, then cried help, and we are forced to foot the bill for them. When they write their books, the money should be paid back to taxpayers.

Dems revoke gag order on GOP health care chart

House Democrats agreed late last week to allow Republicans to send their constituents a mailing critical of the majority’s health care bills, after a two-week delay caused by Democratic allegations that the mailing was inaccurate.

The dispute centered on a chart created by Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas) and Republican staff of the Joint Economic Committee to illustrate the organization of the Democratic health care plan.

The chart illustrates the Democratic plan as a daunting tangle of agencies and bureaucratic procedures.

Last year, lawmakers excoriated the CEOs of the Big Three automakers for traveling to Washington, D.C., by private jet to attend a hearing about a possible bailout of their companies.

But apparently Congress is not philosophically averse to private air travel: At the end of July, the House approved nearly $200 million for the Air Force to buy three elite Gulfstream jets for ferrying top government officials and Members of Congress.

His point is valid. Forcing the US Government to address his regime at the highest level is a cornerstone of Dear Leader's need to project his control over a people he has brutalized for decades. It gives him legitimacy and credibility where he had little or none on an international scale.

Now he has kidnapped two people sent to him compliments of AlGore and we have absolutely no idea of what the Obama administration has paid him to give them back.

One thing is very clear. Clinton didn't show up and convince fearless leader in the error of his ways. This was a deal cut before Clinton ever got on the plane for the photo op.

Will we see a repeat of Clinton and Jimmah Carter's trip? Will Hillary go for a visit and report back what a charming little man he is? Will we find out in a few years that Obama gave him a trillion dollar randsom?

Try as you might, he made Obama bend like the willow, just as he has done time and time again.

Bolton is right on the money and what Obama did was play right into his hands. Just like Clinton, Bush, and Carter. They all talk tough, but in the end they simply encourage him to do more and more outrageous things.

This man is a monster and Obama has just ensured we're going to hear from him again. Probably as soon as he has spent the money.

Rasmussen: 71% Say Obama’s Policies Have Driven Up Deficit

Seventy-one percent (71%) of U.S. voters say President Obama’s policies have increased the size of the federal deficit, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

Only five percent (5%) say the president’s policies have cut the deficit, and 10% say they have had no impact. Thirteen percent (13%) are not sure.

Eighty percent (80%) of investors say Obama’s policies have driven up the deficit, a view shared by just 57% of non-investors.

Not surprisingly, 88% of Republicans blame the president’s policies, compared to 52% of Democrats. But 79% of voters not affiliated with either party agree.

54% Favor Middle Class Tax Cuts Over New Health Care Spending
Rasmussen Reports

Fifty-four percent (54%) of U.S. voters say tax cuts for the middle class are more important than new spending for health care reform, even as President Obama’s top economic advisers signal that tax hikes may be necessary.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey, taken Monday and Tuesday nights, finds that 34% disagree and say new spending for health care reform is more important. Twelve percent (12%) are not sure.

It is important to note that this question asked about new government spending for health care reform rather than about the overall concept of health care reform itself.

The partisan and ideological divide on the question is sizable. Fifty-eight percent (58%) of Democrats say new spending for health care reform is the priority. But 80% of Republicans and 62% of voters not affiliated with either party favor tax cuts for the middle class.

5 facts about the anti-reform mobs (DNC Talking Points on Healthcare

There's been a lot of media coverage about organized mobs intimidating lawmakers, disrupting town halls, and silencing real discussion about the need for real health insurance reform.

The truth is, it's a sham. These "grassroots protests" are being organized and largely paid for by Washington special interests and insurance companies who are desperate to block reform. They're trying to use lies and fear to break the President and his agenda for change.

If you saw any pictures of Bill Clinton taken in North Korea yesterday, you would have notice he had one sour look on his face in every photo. And now we know why…..and you won’t read about this in the main stream press.

It seems he got an early morning wakeup call regarding the two American ladies being help hostage there. As a lot of us know about Bill Clinton, his hearing has gotten much worse after his illness and as he has aged. So Clinton and his staff left immediately on a private plane. During the flight, he kept complaining to his aides about why the flight took so long. Eventually they arrive and the airplane door is opened with Bill Clinton standing at the top of the deplaning ramp. He looks down and spots a large sign that says:

WELCOME

He then yells at aide “What the hell is this all about”?

“When they called me they said we going across the river for two women for some Pune Tang”.
