Innocent but Dead

There is a long and remarkable article in the current New Yorker about a man who was executed in Texas in 2004 for deliberately setting a fire that killed his three small children. Rigorous scientific analysis has since shown that there was no evidence that the fire in a one-story, wood frame house in Corsicana was the result of arson, as the authorities had alleged.

In other words, it was an accident. No crime had occurred.

Cameron Todd Willingham, who refused to accept a guilty plea that would have spared his life, and who insisted until his last painful breath that he was innocent, had in fact been telling the truth all along.

It was inevitable that some case in which a clearly innocent person had been put to death would come to light...

He remained on death row for 12 years, but it was only in the weeks leading up to his execution that convincing scientific evidence of his innocence began to emerge. A renowned scientist and arson investigator, Gerald Hurst, educated at Cambridge and widely recognized as a brilliant chemist, reviewed the evidence in the Willingham case and began systematically knocking down every indication of arson.

The authorities were unmoved. Willingham was executed by lethal injection on Feb. 17, 2004.

Now comes a report on the case from another noted scientist, Craig Beyler, who was hired by a special commission, established by the state of Texas to investigate errors and misconduct in the handling of forensic evidence.

The report is devastating, the kind of disclosure that should send a tremor through one’s conscience. There was absolutely no scientific basis for determining that the fire was arson, said Beyler. No basis at all. He added that the state fire marshal who investigated the case and testified against Willingham “seems to be wholly without any realistic understanding of fires.” He said the marshal’s approach seemed to lack “rational reasoning” and he likened it to the practices “of mystics or psychics.”

Obama's vacation, week two: Time out (Chicago Tribune)

President Barack Obama and his family returned to the White House today from a weeklong vacation on Martha's Vineyard interrupted by some big national stories.

But the president is planning to take the rest of the week off.
"The president will continue his vacation through the end of the week,'' the White House press secretary announced this evening --with a note that the media will be informed "if any public events are added to the schedule.''

Zogby: Obama Approval Plummets to 42 Percent

President Barack Obama's job approval rating is down to 42%, with a decline in approval from Democrats the leading factor.

The latest Zogby Interactive poll of 4,518 likely voters conducted from August 28-31 found 48% disapprove and 42% approve of the job Obama is doing. The poll found 75% of Democrats approve of Obama's performance, a drop of 13 points among Democrats from an interactive poll done July 21-24 of this year. That same poll found 48% of all likely voters approving of Obama's job performance, and 49% disapproving.

Detroit sets record for unemployment

While the state of Michigan has the highest unemployment rate of any state in the nation, the city of Detroit leads the way for cities.

For the month of July, the unemployment rate in Detroit stood at a staggering 28.9% — and that’s probably undercounted in the same way all unemployment figures are due to the way such rates are measured. Still, it’s the highest rate on record for Detroit.

Kennedy, The KGB And The Media
(IBD)

Among the many encomiums that the mainstream media showered on the late senator from Massachusetts, something was curiously missing: the link between Sen. Ted Kennedy and the KGB.

Shortly after the Soviet archives were opened up following the collapse of communism in 1991, Tim Sebastian, a reporter for the London Times, came across a strange memo.

It purported to detail how in the 1984 political season Kennedy tried to enlist the aid of the Soviet regime, then headed by former KGB chief Yuri Andropov, to get President Reagan defeated.
When we first heard of this, we thought it must be a mistake. Or a hoax.

But it appears to be neither. Indeed, to our knowledge, the memo written by then-KGB chief Victor Chebrikov to Andropov has never been challenged as a fake.
And what it says is simply shocking.

Joe Kennedy for Senate? Are you kidding me? (Washington Examiner)

Predictably, the push has begun to get a Kennedy into the Senate seat held for lo those many years by Ted Kennedy. The Kennedys favorite newspaper - the Boston Globe - all but annointed Joe in a news story by Frank Phillips that also handily reminded everybody that the seat is, after all, the permanent property of the Kennedy family.

Joe Kennedy was expelled from several private schools after having earned the nickname "Dirty Joe" as a result of his quick temper and bullying.

He regularly got into fights with his younger brothers and male cousins. He eventually graduated from Manter Hall School in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1971.

In 1973, a jeep he was driving overturned, injuring his brother David Kennedy and permanently paralyzing David's then-girlfriend, Pam Kelley.

The police cited Kennedy with reckless driving. The judge suspended his license temporarily.

Paralyzed victim of Joe K crash: Skinflint won't help

Joseph P. Kennedy II, who built upon his family fortune with a lucrative career of his own since leaving politics, allegedly told a Hyannis mother he left paralyzed for life in a car crash 32 years ago that he is ``broke'' and won't be her financial crutch any longer.

``I'm broke. I work for a non-profit. I'm not a bottomless pit,'' the chairman of Citizens Energy Corp. and former congressman allegedly told Pamela Burkley, whom he knew in their star-crossed youth on Cape Cod as Pam Kelley – his late brother David's girlfriend.

Kennedy denies through his lawyer that he made the remarks.

Though she acknowledges Kennedy, 52, has thrown some $50,000 her way over the years, Burkley, 50, told the Herald, ``I feel like he thinks I'm a piece of trash sitting in a wheelchair.''

YOU CAN'T KEEP A BAD MAN DOWN: SPITZER IS EYEING A COMEBACK
(NY Post)

Disgraced former Gov. Eliot Spitzer has been privately talking with friends about a possible comeback, and is considering a run for statewide office next year, several sources told The Post.

Less than 18 months after he left Albany in a prostitution scandal, Spitzer has held informal discussions in recent weeks about the pos sibility of making a bid for state comptroller or the US Senate seat currently held by Kirsten Gillibrand, sources said.

The hooker-happy Demo crat has also discussed his own halfway-decent poll numbers in recent surveys, which have shown him more popular than Gov. Pat erson, whose own numbers have tanked.
"He's weighing it," said one source.

Grandson's suit claims Russian paper libelled Joseph Stalin
(Toronto RED STAR)

MOSCOW–Joseph Stalin was in the dock yesterday when a Russian court held a preliminary hearing in a libel case brought by his grandson over a newspaper story that said the tyrant had ordered the killings of Soviet citizens.

Rights groups say the case shows a creeping attempt in modern Russia to paint a more benevolent picture of the Soviet Union's most feared leader, under whose rule millions perished.

Stalin's grandson, Yevgeny Dzhugashvili, is seeking 9.5 million rubles ($327,000) from the Novaya Gazeta newspaper and 500,000rubles ($17,225) from the author of an article published last April claiming Stalin personally signed death orders.

Leonid Zhura, a convinced Stalinist who is representing Dzhugashvili in court, said the article, based on declassified Kremlin documents, damaged Stalin's reputation.

Ted Kennedy's crucial role in defeating Marriage Amendment in Massachusetts Legislature
(massresistance.org)

Sen. Ted Kennedy was the secret critical force in the background that caused the Massachusetts Legislature to deny the people the right to vote on the Marriage Amendment, it was revealed this week.

Less than 48 hours after Kennedy's passing, the homosexual newspaper Bay Windows published an article by Marc Solomon, who at that time ran MassEquality, the main homosexual lobby group trying to stop the amendment.

Ted Kennedy personally pressured enough conservative Democrats (and even "libertarian-leaning" Republicans) who the homosexual lobby was targeting, to change their votes on that the measure to allow a public vote would be defeated. Kennedy also worked on the overall strategy to defeat it.

Without Kennedy's involvement, it would likely not have been defeated the Legislature -- and the people would have been able to vote.

Female journalist smiling, like bobble heads while hypocrite Obama underpays female W.H. staffers
(The Collins Report)

Here’s another story that would be front page if a Republican was president. It’s being smothered by the Democrat controlled media because it exposes their master as a sexist hypocrite.

Where are the hundreds of female journalists who should be demanding an answer as to why Obama pays women less than men?

His “do as I say not as I do” attitude has been the M.O. for Obama since his first day in office.

On July 1 a report on the salaries of Obama White House staffers was quietly released and shoved under the rug by the media.

It showed the average female staffer is paid $9,168 less than Obama’s male employees. This is hypocritical in the extreme.

Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 “Ledbetter” extended the time to sue for gender based pay discrimination.

Yet no one has asked Obama why this isn’t a violation of the spirit if not the letter of Ledbetter a bill he made such a big deal out of signing with less than ten days in office. No one has pointed out that Barack Obama campaigned on promises to do everything he could to equalize pay scales between the genders, and even mentioned “Ledbetter” several times.

Bloom is off Rose Kennedy Schlossberg (Another classy member of "America's Family")
(The Boston Herald )

FOX25’s video that purportedly shows JFK’s granddaughter Rose Kennedy Schlossberg flipping off the media during the Ted Kennedy motorcade has hit YouTube.

The 38-second clip shows a 20-something girl, who appears to be Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg’s daughter Rose, giving the middle finger to the media as she drives by them in a limo during the procession from the Cape to the Kennedy Library.

Apparently, the young lady believed the not-so-subtle salute would be invisible from behind the car’s tinted window.

Very classy. . . .

Madigan makes a product that will soon be illegal to sell in the U.S. - a regular incandescent bulb. Two years ago, his employer, GE, lobbied in favor of the law that will outlaw the bulbs.

Madigan’s colleagues, waiting for their evening shift to begin, all know that GE is replacing the incandescents for now with compact fluorescents bulbs, which GE manufactures in China.

Update:-Harry Reid: proponent of paper cuts?-

Turns out Harry Reid was only joking when he told a media exec last week that he hoped the biggest paper in his state would “go out of business.”
Over the weekend, Sherman Frederick, a columnist with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, reported that Reid made the comment to another higher-up at the 175,000-circulation daily during a Chamber of Commerce event last Wednesday.
“Such behavior cannot go unchallenged,” wrote Frederick, CEO of the paper’s parent company.

After 24 hours of silence on the comment, a Reid spokesman got back to POLITICO on Monday to say it was all a misunderstanding blown out of proportion by a paper with an anti-Reid bent.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said "PG+" would be a "members-only website with interactive features and exclusive content" available to subscribers for 36 dollars a year or for 3.99 dollars a month.

It said "PG+" would not replace Post-Gazette.com, the newspaper's current website, but would feature "a new stream of exclusive blogs, videos, live chats and behind-the-scenes insights into the news of the day."

“the mainstream media is in catch-up mode”- Again!

Media Stunned as ObamaCare Unravels
Pajamas Media - Jennifer Rubin

So now the mainstream media is in catch-up mode. Having quietly fretted as Obama’s poll numbers drifted lower and misrepresented the extent of independent voters’ support, they now must explain that the town hall crowds weren’t simply crackpots or dupes of the insurance industry. Those people are actually quite representative of the electorate — especially the electorate willing to turn out to vote in the 2010 congressional elections. And while they swooned at Obama press conferences, the media must now admit that Obama has been colossally ineffective at persuading the public.

The “catch-up” phenomenon is nothing new. We saw it with the Iraq war surge. For months and months the military, a few stalwart senators like John McCain and Joe Lieberman, conservative media outlets, and bipartisan military experts reported back that the surge was making a difference. The New York Times, the weekly not-much-news magazines, and the network broadcasts kept mum. But then shortly before then-candidate Obama was to visit Iraq, [the mainstream media rushed to close the gap between the reality on the ground and their own gloom-and-doom reporting.] It was catch-up time. The surge hadn’t suddenly worked; its success just couldn’t be ignored any longer...

Illinois Tax Increase Day! Alcohol, Soda, Candy and Shampoo?
(The Examiner) THE CHICAGO WAY

The cost of living just went up for Illinois residents, but not because of inflation or other economic conditions.

Rather, today marks the effective date for increased taxes levied upon alcohol, candy, soft drinks and personal hygiene products. The taxes, part of the $31 billion capital bill, are designed to offset the costs of infrastructure spending across the state.

Starting today a fifth of liquor in Illinois will now cost an additional 81 cents, reflecting a 90% increase in the excise tax on hard liquor. In addition, a 90% increase on the taxation of a bottle of wine and 24% increase in taxes on beer will also hit Illinois consumers.

Despite, the increased taxes going into effect today, consumers may not feel the full effect of the legislation until a month from now.

Most liquor stores and grocers have stock-piled as much liquor as possible in an attempt to keep prices lower for consumers for as long as possible.

September 1st also marks the effective date for a more than 600%increase...

The unspoken legacy of Ted Kennedy
PATTERICO

This weekend, another member of the Kennedy clan was buried with a liberal application of liberal myth-making.

Jacqueline Kennedy begged historian-journo Theodore M. White to rescue JFK’s legacy. White obliged by regurgitating her Camelot myth, knowing it to be a misreading of history.

The death of Ted Kennedy unavoidably exposed a new generation to Kennedy’s many sins —including, but not limited to Chappaquiddick — which tend to get glossed over or unmentioned in public education and the establishment media.

Accordingly, those who have spent decades enabling the Kennedys rolled out yet another myth: that Ted Kennedy “redeemed” himself after leaving Mary Jo Kopechne to drown (perhaps to slowly asphyxiate), failing to report it to authorities for ten hours, and by most accounts lying to the authorities about the event.

We can never know whether he privately confessed his sins. Nor can those peddling the redemption myth over the weekend.

We do know that Ted Kennedy never showed any contrition or publicly admitted guilt. We know that he privately found Chappaquiddick a source of humor.

We know that for decades afterward, Kennedy still engaged in grossly inappropriate, occasionally criminal behavior with younger women while binge drinking.

President gives address on the coming flu pandemic; refuses to take questions (again) WTF
(Fox News Channel)

As the Obama Creep Show continues, the president just gave a very strange address on TV. He stood there, warning of the H1N1 swine flu pandemic, and asked people to cough into their sleeves.

He warned that older people may become more ill than younger people. He said that people should be aware of their health. He urged people to get flu vaccine injections.

He implied that we are on the brink of a disaster on the scale of the 1918 flu which killed 20,000,000 people. Then, after making everyone's hair stand up, he turned and walked away.

With all that is really wrong -- starting with his administration's seriously creepy doings -- this is what he called a press conference for? And then answering no questions?

Reid: Teddy's death "going to help us"(Politico)

The Reno Gazette Journal has a sit-down with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who addresses the Ted Kennedy question in, um, an interesting way.

Q: How will U.S. Sen. (Edward) Kennedy's death affect things?

A: I think it's going to help us.

He hasn't been around for some time. We're going to have a new chairman of that committee, it'll be, I don't know for sure, but I think Sen. (Chris) Dodd, (D-Conn.).

He has a right to take it. Either him or (U.S. Sen. Tom) Harkin, (D-Iowa), whichever one wants it can have it. I think he (Kennedy) will be a help. He's an inspiration for us. That was the issue of his life and he didn't get it done.

Nothing in here is particularly new -- Kennedy will help the cause, Dodd gets to carry the banner, Kennedy's work remains undone. But the straight-shooting Reid does have a gift for saying non-controversial things in the most controversial way possible.

Obama asks every student "what they can do to help the president"
(ExurbanLeague.com)

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, President Obama is going to deliver an address to all American students. Obama's Department of (Re-)Education helpfully provides detailed instructions so that the teachers can help promote Dear Leader's message.

Teachers can extend learning by having students:

Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals.

Not surprising they'll be "redistributed." I can't help but be reminded of Michelle Obama's chilling quote from the campaign trail, which I placed on the adjacent poster:

Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your divisions. That you come out of your isolation, that you move out of your comfort zones. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage.

Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed.
As a parent, I agree with Ace: "Hey, Obama, can we see the text of your speech to every schoolkid before you deliver it?"

British Government hosts petition to remove Ted Kennedy's 'IRA' knighthood (IrishCentral)

Thousands of people have signed an online petition hosted by the British Government to remove the late Ted Kennedy's knighthood.

The petition's creator Stephen Clements says he started the petition because he claims that Kennedy supported the IRA.

"Ted Kennedy throughout the 70's and 80's actively supported groups whose sole purpose was to financially support IRA families," he said.

"This support enabled the IRA to continue its muder (sic) campaign against UK citizens for a longer period than would otherwise have happened and contributed to the number of deaths on both sides.

"It is highly unlikely that the US Government would have rewarded people who financially supported the families of the 911 bombers - so why does the UK Prime Minister believe that we should reward similar people."
